DANTE The yellow monster grabbed Fräulein Schmidt with all four hands and lifted her over its head. The young woman thrashed her arms and legs like a poor swimmer, unable to break free. In the dim lantern light, Dante rushed forward and kicked the sturdy beast in the leg. The monster grunted. Then it released one hand from the teacher and backhanded the boy across the face. Dante bounced off the wall, popping his nose. Blood spurted from both nostrils. His eyes welled with tears, but it was as much from failing to save his teacher as it was from the stinging pain. In desperation, Fräulein Schmidt swung her fist low and hard. The blow struck the creature in one of its three eyes, causing a gooey liquid to explode across her arm. The monster lurched awkwardly.
