Their only light, what little it was, came from the shadowy glimmer of a lantern far behind them, but it got darker with every step they took. After all the turns, rises, and dips they had passed, he was surprised its glow was visible at all. He had always had decent night vision, and even now thought he detected a distant flicker in front of them, though it seemed to disappear whenever he looked directly at it.
