13. Trapped

DANTE Dante was afraid on many levels. What if the door stayed locked despite the strip he’d used to keep that from happening? What if it worked, and the monsters returned to find the open door? What did monsters do to people who broke the rules in their jail? His hands shook as he caught the inside edge of the door with a fingernail and pulled on it. The door started to open. He pressed his left palm against the wall for stability and slid the inner edge of the door across the tip of his thumb to maintain a gradual opening in case some monsters were still in the hall. The slower, the better, he thought. Apparently, it was too slow for his cellmate.
