LENA SCHMIDT Lena awoke with a mild throbbing pain in both temples. Her lower back ached, and when she opened her eyes, the world spun madly. She clamped her eyelids shut and lay still wondering if she had caught the flu or something. Her body was so stiff she could hardly bend her arms, but she wriggled her fingers, toes, hands, and feet to get the blood flowing. No, she wasn’t ill. In fact, she felt quite good except for the dizziness and stiffness. She flutter-blinked her eyes open and focused on the white ceiling, presumably inside her cell. Finally, she raised her head to look around. She wasn’t in a cell or strapped to a gurney while being dissected in some a laboratory.
