“It’s the Rothschild home,” said the soldier, a youthful man about Lena’s age, with dark hair and kindly brown eyes. “We captured it, and the officers made the main house their headquarters. The wine here is some of the best in France.”
The German soldiers had transported Lena and the girls in military vehicles to an impressive multi-story brick home in the center of a busy complex of farm buildings. Vast fields of well-tended grapevines extended to every horizon, suggesting that this was not some run-of-the-mill vineyard. Lena was curious about the wine.
