CHAPTER 48
NOVA'S POV
I stop right in front of Nova's room, with the duvets in my arms. I can't push away the guilt I am feeling. If I don't feel like an i***t, I don't know what else is going to save me.
“Is everything okay, Alpha?” I hear one of the maids ask, and I give her a small nod.
She seems to pause, before shrugging, and going back to her business. By the time I push the door open, Nova is right there, and she is looking at me like she expects me to say something.
“You're back early,” she says, and I give her an affirmative nod.
“I am,” I answer. “The duvet was in my room.”
“The same room that I destroyed?” she asks, and I narrow my eyes at her. She is being a little too calm. I can't deny the fact that it is a good thing. But I just don't expect her to react that way. She is too quiet. Especially since she knows that she is about to be confined.
“Am I going to be confined to this room?” She asks, and I press my lips into a thin line.
“I can't keep you here. Another room will be prepared for you,” I mutter.
She walks towards me, taking the duvet from my hands. “Of course,” she answers, letting out a soft laugh.
She lays down on the bed, before turning to look at me. “Aren’t you going to join me? You don't have to worry. I'm not going to hurt you.”
I don't even wait for her to finish speaking as I take my boots off, and strip off my shirt. She looks at me from head to toe, and just for a second, I can tell that she has a lot to say. But then, she shakes her head, laying down on the bed. I join her immediately, wrapping my arms around her.
Her skin is burning hot, but I don't move away. I want to feel her. I want to smell her.
The last thing I want to do is hurt her feelings.
I pull her even closer, and I feel her let out a breath of relief.
“I love you,” I say again, but she doesn't answer this time.
---
I am walking around the pack in the morning, and the whispers have gotten a thousand times worse. The rumors have spread around the whole pack, and I know that I can't really keep Nova away from me. By the time she wakes up, she is in a better mood.
“You want to go with me to the office?” I ask, and she gives me a small nod. I notice the way her eyes light up.
She grabs her camera again, and I feel my chest feel much lighter.
“What if I lose control?” She suddenly asks, and I pull her closer again.
“You don't have to worry about anything,” I whisper. “I'm with you. And if you lose control, I'll be there to handle it with you.”
Her fingers are entangled in mine, as she walks into the office, perching on one of the chairs, as she watches me work.
The maids come over, serving her all the food that she can ask for.
She looks over at me, as she stuffs her mouth with cookies. She looks nothing less than adorable as she sits down there.
“Are you the one asking them to serve me all this?” she asks, and I look up from the document that I have just signed.
“No,” I say. “Maybe the maids just want to be on your good side.”
She has a small smile on her face. “That's a good thing, isn't it?” She asks, and I give her a nod, as she goes back to touching her camera.
Work is a lot easier, having her around.
She suddenly looks over at me, and a knock comes at the door almost immediately.
“Come in,” I call out, and one of the deltas walks in, with Killian.
That can never be good.
Even Nova seems to tense up, and Killian looks over at her with a smirk for just a second, before looking over at me.
“What's wrong?” I ask, looking over at the guard, and he gestures towards Killian.
“Well, news has just come in. Beta Jason was supposed to be the one who informed you about this. But he wasn't around.”
I close my eyes. I don't know why they keep taking time like this for something important.
“Are you going to go straight to the point or not?”
“Calm down and let him speak,” Killian says, and I don't even look in his direction.
The delta gives me a quick nod. “Information reaching us now is that the Broker is on the move again.”
I frown. “What broker?”
“The same one that had offered to buy Miss. Nova.”
I feel Nova tense up where she is sitting.
“Where is Jason?” I ask, immediately getting to my feet.
“He went to get some information. He'll be here soon.”
“I'll be right there,” I say, and the delta gives me a small nod, before heading out of the room.
Killian is still here, with his hands folded across his chest, like he is waiting to see what steps I am going to take.
“What do you want?” I ask, and he just smirks. His smirk is so wide that it is slowly turning into a full blown smile.
“Nothing, little brother,” he says. “I just know that this isn't the beginning.”
Nova freezes even more and I close my eyes, watching Killian as he finally leaves the office.
I lean down in front of Nova, and she doesn't take her eyes off me, like she is waiting for me to assure her. I do just that.
“Nothing is going to happen to you,” I say, and she gives me a small nod.
“But what if it does?” she asks. “What if he's a lot quicker? We won't be able to stop him, and he'll take me away.”
I cup her cheeks immediately. “Nothing will make him take you away from me. I won't let that happen. Not in this life, not in the next.”
That seems to be enough, and she seems a little more relieved.
“Where are you going now?” She asks in a whisper, and I am already looking outside. I can feel Jason trying to reach out to me.
“I'll go and check on Jason, then I'll come right back for you. Please, don't go anywhere.”
She doesn't say anything, and I place a light kiss on her forehead, as I head out of the office.
“Watch her,” I tell the guard that is outside the office, and he gives me a small nod.
I have to f*****g keep Nova safe. That is the most important thing.
It doesn't matter what it is going to take.
