CHAPTER 56

CHAPTER 56 CASSIAN'S POV Nova is by my side as we head outside. She is beside me. Safe. Right where I can see her. I can't ask for more. Yes, she is worried, but I can see the adrenaline that floods through her system since I allow her to come with me. She doesn't need to tell me. It is written all over her. “Are you okay?” I ask, and she gives me a small nod. The both of us walk out to the main pack, and I can smell the burned things. No, no, no. The heat of the fire hits my skin immediately. The storage is being burned down to pieces. I feel Nova's knees buckle, and I hold her up. My hands are balled into fists, as I look at everything. The security systems are being tampered with, and injured wolves are lying around. I close my eyes, as my throat closes up. I try as much as I can, not to show any emotion. But it is hard to even do that. Not when I am possibly losing lives and food. The other pack members have already come out, counting the losses. Jaden comes out of his house, and he looks around. I can immediately see the look of devastation written all over him. “How did this happen?” I ask, looking around. Jaden is right beside me in seconds. “I don't know. I was inside with Nate, and then I heard the alarm.” “Someone is definitely messing with the systems!” one of them screams. “But who could it be?” They are starting to look at each other, and I run a hand through my face. “That's enough,” I say calmly. The only thing I don't want at all, is for them to turn against each other. And I can see them heading down that road. All eyes are on me, as they wait for me to make a decision. Nova moves away from my side, and I let her. I can still see her. She walks into the building, as I start talking with Jason. “Did anybody see who did it?” I ask, and he shakes his head. “From everything that I've heard, no.” I close my eyes. I don't want to hear that. I don't want to believe that someone from inside the pack is behind this whole thing. But now, I have no choice but to believe that. Someone from the pack is definitely helping them. “Her arrival made things worse,” I hear one of the pack members say, and I am wrapping my fingers around his collar before I even know what I am doing. “Calm down,” Jason says, trying to pull me off the omega that says it. I close my eyes, and I suddenly hear Nova call out to me. I hurry into the burnt building, and she is standing right in front of a wall. She looks over at me, before pointing at a symbol. One that is definitely ancient. And it is burned into the wall. Whoever does it, wants us to see it. “I recognize it,” she whispers, making me stiffen. “Where do you remember it from?” I ask, making her look at me. She looks like she is barely present in the room at that point. “From one of my visions. I know I've seen it before.” She is starting to raise her voice, like she wants to convince me so bad that she is saying the truth. “It's okay,” I say, pulling her to myself. “I believe you.” I turn around just in time to see Killian looking at the both of us. Fuck, he is still there. And he is looking at Nova with concern. He doesn't even have his signature smirk on his face. Nova pulls away from the hug. “I think it's something connected to my bloodline. I just can't explain it.” I give her a small nod. “We'll figure it out. Once it's morning, we'll ask the priestess.” That seems to calm her down, and her hands stop shaking a bit. Jason walks into the building as well, pushing past Killian as the debris falls against his skin. “Cassian, I think you need to see this,” he says, and I can see the worry in his eyes. I head out of the warehouse, with Nova. She clings to me. The both of us take in the sight of the wounded wolf that manages to drag itself in front of us. Blood has coated its fur, and the teeth are bare. I can immediately spot the silver blade stuck in its stomach, and the marks on the neck. All oozing with blood. I stand there, as it shifts back to its human form. “Alpha,” he wheezes, looking up at me. My jaw tightens. There is no saving him. Not when his skin is blue, and his eyes are almost turning silver. He is far gone. And it is going to break me more than it should, if he begs for me to save him. “They found the second vessel,” he says instead, and Nova's eyes widen. My stomach turns. “Second vessel?” She asks, looking between the man and me. He opens his mouth to speak, but the words don't even make their way out of his mouth before he passes out. Jason and some other men immediately haul him up. I know that they will still try to save him. And if they can't, then they will give him the burial he deserves. “What was he talking about?” Nova demands, but even I don't have the answers for her. I know that they are here for her. She is what the broker wants. Thankfully, she is with me. I don't want to think about what might have happened if she was with someone else. But then, there is a second vessel. And they have found it. Killian steps in. “I don't think you're the only thing the intruders were looking for, Nova.”
