CHAPTER 58

CHAPTER 58 CASSIAN'S POV I am just about to walk into the room, when I hear someone talking with Nova. I frown, because I know that nobody is going to walk into the room. But I hear it loud and clear. The voice of somebody telling her that somebody is lying to her. That only heightens my suspicions. As I stand on the terrace, I notice the way Killian leaves the pack at certain hours. The way he disappears. There is something about it. I run my hands through my hair, and I can barely deny the fact that I am going insane when I think about things like this. Having them at the pack is still the one thing that I am not comfortable with. I suddenly feel a hand on my back, and I turn around just in time to see Beatrice. She has a smile on her face, while I narrow my eyes at her. If anybody has answers for the things that Killian is doing, it is her. “What's Killian up to?” I ask, and she frowns. “What are you talking about?” she whispers, with confusion written all over her. Maybe if I didn't know how much of an expert she was at lying, I would have let it go then and there. But I know that. And that is the main reason why I am going to push it further. “You know very well what I'm talking about. You're hiding things that you and Killian know about Nova.” I take a step towards her, and she takes one back, with her back pressed to the wall. “What are you hiding? Did he ask you to keep his secrets for him?” She licks her lips slowly, before shaking her head. “I don't know anything.” I slam my hand into the wall without thinking twice. “Damn it, you know everything. Just tell me what you know.” “You think everything is about betrayal because you haven't even learned how to trust!” I feel my chest tighten, and I take a step away from her. “Really?” I ask, trying not to laugh. “I really have to remind you about just how much I trusted you? How much I denied and even cut off the people that told me you were getting involved with Killian. And even after that, I trust Nova with everything in me. So don't come here talking about trust.” That manages to keep her silent. Good. “I didn't mean to do it,” she ends up whispering, but I am not even willing to listen. If she isn't telling me anything that is going to help Nova, then she can as well go to hell. “Just leave,” I say, and I watch her as she walks away in the slowest manner possible. Like she is waiting for me to call her back. I don't make that mistake. --- I stand at the terrace on yet another evening, as I wait for Killian to head out of the pack as he usually does. I know that I am not going to wait for him to return, or ask him any questions. I have to f*****g move. I move in the most stealthy way I have done in years. He keeps turning back, and I keep hiding in the bushes. There is something about how tense his body is. He is hiding something. And he is going somewhere that he doesn't want people to be. Soon, another rustle from the bushes comes, and I see someone else emerge from the bushes. I can't help but c**k an eyebrow. I take in the sight of the person. I know that I wouldn't be shocked if it was the broker. But there is no way I am not going to kill them both. But this person isn't even the broker. Not when it is a soldier from another pack. It is a council member. I should have known that he was in talks with one of them. That is the only reason why they wanted to hand control over to him. Without even thinking, I lunge forward, sinking my teeth into his neck. Killian tries to talk, but I am not even listening as my claws sink into his skin. That is all the years of resentment speaking for me. The council member manages to escape, and Killian finally manages to push me away, making me slam my back into one of the trees. I immediately get to my feet again, more than willing to attack. “What is wrong with you?” he asks immediately, and I stand there, breathing heavily. “You're the one talking to the council members, aren't you? You're the one asking them to talk me into giving you the pack. You're the one asking them to f*****g confine Nova.” He looks genuinely confused. “Why would they want to confine Nova?” “You didn't ask your little council elder?” I spit, and Killian spits the blood in his mouth. “Well, congratulations for ruining the only lead we had!” he snarls, making me freeze. “Only lead? What are you talking about?” Killian rolls his eyes, and I can feel the anger and pain coming off him in waves. “I've been investigating the broker by myself this whole time. I didn't need your help.” I narrow my eyes. It is still hard to believe him. I can't even find reasons why he would want to do something like that. He isn't my biggest fan. If he is investigating the broker, then that means he wants to keep Nova safe. But why? “Why were you doing that?” I ask in a calmer tone now, and he bites his lower lip for just a second, like he is contemplating telling me whatever he is about to say. “You think I came back because I wanted to take the pack or start a war?” he asks, and I don't even know what to say. “I came back because of Nova. Maybe you can't tell, but she's the start of something catastrophic. Neither me nor you might be able to stop it.”
