CHAPTER 40

CHAPTER 40 CASSIAN'S POV ‘You’re not the only one the council had plans for.’ I would be lying if I said that my brother's words weren’t living rent-free in my head the whole time. I hate the fact that they have an effect on me. More than they’re supposed to. My hands are wrapped around my third glass of whiskey as I sit down on the chair in my office. I want to be with Nova. At the same time, I want to give her the space I know that she needs. I want her to get used to the pack. Just in case… anything happens to me. She's there in the pack, and she won't let me down. She won't let Killian take over the pack. She and Jason are going to work very well together. Fuck, how did I get here? The last thing I ever thought about was my death. But here I am, acting depressed and drowning in whiskey. A knock comes at the door, gaining my attention immediately. I gently push the glass away from me. “Come in,” I call, and the door is pushed open. Beatrice walks in. I close my eyes. The words ‘get out’ are at the tip of my tongue, but I swallow them back. “What do you want?” I ask, and she closes the door behind her as she looks around the office with a sad smile on her lips. “You changed things,” she says, and that is yet one of the petty things that I am so f*****g proud of. She had arranged my whole office to her own taste, and I was obsessed with the decor once upon a time. That was one of the things that made Jason feel that she was the best for me. I am glad that she is constantly proving him wrong. “I suddenly fell in love with black,” I say without second thought. “Now, what do you want?” “I just wanted to talk to you,” she says, sitting down opposite me. “It's been years. I just wanted to maybe… you know, have some whiskey like old times.” I give her a small smile. “You know me better than this, Beatrice. The last person I’ll spend time with is my brother's mate.” She tips her chin, smiling. She doesn’t stand up. Instead, she reaches over for my glass of whiskey, bringing it to her lips. I immediately dedicate throwing that cup away to memory. I am just about to ask her to leave when it suddenly hits me. If Killian knows things about me and Nova not being fully bonded, then there is a chance that she knows something as well. There are things that are different about Nova. That is probably the reason for the bond that hasn’t fully happened. But at the same time, I can’t push the thought that Killian was talking about me and Beatrice. That was the plan the pack had for me. My hands are placed on the table, and she leans in as well, pushing her t**s forward. Wrong man, Beatrice. Wrong man. “Why didn’t the bond happen?” I ask, and she presses her lips into a thin line, bringing the glass of whiskey to her lips again. “I shouldn’t be telling you things,” she says, and I smirk in response. “Killian wouldn’t like that.” I lean back in my chair. “Well, Killian isn’t here, is he?” “You’re right,” she mutters. “It wasn’t meant to happen.” That statement makes me frown immediately. “What are you talking about?” “The council members met with my father first. They tried to forge a bond between the both of us. And I was pushed forward to try to get you to like me. And you did. But to the pack, the both of us weren’t powerful enough. Their pairing failed.” “What did they ask you to do next?” I ask. This is the part of the story that nobody bothers to tell me. Hell, she just came forth like the both of us were perfect for each other. My wolf never felt attracted to her, but I was willing to push it. The pack elders were pushing the whole thing as well. And now that I am hearing the story from her, it all makes sense. It is barely ever heard that the pack elders make decisions with the people in mind. If they aren’t thinking about the pack or something else, then they don’t have a reason to make a decision. “I was asked to try with your brother. And this time, my father was the one doing all the work. He just wanted his daughter to have a good life. You can’t really blame him for wanting that. “And with your brother, there was no pressure. Everything just snapped into place like magic.” My eyes are narrowed as I look at her. How long were they planning the whole thing? How long was her father pressing for her to cheat on me with Killian? I want to laugh. Maybe if I saw the signs, I would have done things differently. “You didn’t fail to keep me, Cassian,” she says, looking up at me. “The bond just rejected you.” “I’m glad it did,” I say calmly. She flinches, and I can’t tell if it is out of hurt. If it is, I’m not sure that I care much about that. Beatrice suddenly leans in. “You know, it was hard to do what I did. And it took a lot of time for me to even choose to cheat on you. I didn’t mean for you to catch us like that.” I c**k my head to the side. “You wished that I went on with the relationship after you had totally clicked with my brother?” She doesn’t affirm, but her eyes answer everything. She is obviously crazy. “I actually liked you. I still do. And it’s hard to pretend that I don’t feel all these things. Especially since you’re so close.” “I’m mated to someone else now. And the bond clicked. Like magic. I won’t be cheating.” Beatrice smiles. “Well, she’s lucky. But you can’t say anything about cheating just yet. Not when you aren’t even officially mated to her yet.” Getting officially mated to Nova is one of the things that I want to get done as soon as I can. But then, I have to yet again get permission from the pack elders. “Like you said, we’ll see, Beatrice.” She licks her lips. Nova didn’t break the bond. She chose me. Or something stronger chose the both of us. It is hard to ignore that. “You’ve heard about her kind, haven’t you?” Beatrice asks, and I narrow my eyes at her. How does she know about that as well? Is that the reason why Killian is circling around Nova? He wants her. He wants her power. He wants every f*****g thing that she can offer. But I am not going to let him have it. Nova is so f*****g pure. And he isn’t worthy. “I have,” I say calmly, and she leans back in her chair with a small smile on her lips. But it is starting to look like it is out of pity. “I’m just pretty shocked that the moon goddess ended up pairing you with someone that the world tried to erase.” I feel my throat tighten. I’m not sure what is between me and Nova is just about some kind of bond. It has to be something worse. Something a lot more dangerous. And I have very limited time to find out what it is.
