CHAPTER 21
NOVA'S POV
By the time I get up, I can't hold myself back from heading outside. The house seems more than clustered, and I just want to feel the breeze outside.
As I slip my legs into the flip flops that are waiting outside, I push the door open. There are other parts of the house that I haven't explored yet, and I'm not sure that I'm ready to even do that.
“Stop,” someone says as soon as I step outside. I turn to the side, seeing one of the guards. I c**k an eyebrow at him. I can't help but imagine that Cassian is the one behind the whole thing. Because Jason would never.
“What do you want?” I ask, and my voice comes out a lot sharper than intended. I don't miss the way the man seems to flinch.
The frown that is on his face immediately changes to something that I can't fully recognize.
“The Alpha asked me not to let you go out,” he says, and it takes a lot for me not to roll my eyes. We are going through this all over again?
“I'm sure that the Alpha wouldn't have a problem with me taking a stroll around the pack,” I say, quickly turning my lips upward in a smile.
“You were taken from your room the last time. I'm not sure I want to take that risk all over again.”
My lips press into a thin line, and before I can even think properly, I can feel the energy humming underneath my skin.
The golden strips of energy are already coming out of my skin, and I look up at the guard.
He quickly takes a step back. “You may go your way,” he says calmly, and I find myself folding my hand into a fist, and the humming stops. That is when I tip my chin, turning around.
There is a different kind of energy that I feel. These are men that are known for killing people. Men that look more than powerful the moment they get on bikes. But somehow, they are scared of me.
Me.
It feels even more intense as I walk deeper into the pack. I can feel different eyes on me. I can feel their tremble. Their whispers.
There is a smirk that is threatening to escape my lips. A part of me likes all of this.
I walk further when I notice three wolves standing in front of me, snarling.
I search for the fear in my chest, but it isn't even there. Instead, my eyes narrow. Energy hums underneath my skin again, and my hands ball into fists.
It is getting harder to control this whole thing.
“Finish them,” I hear a voice say in my head, and I shake my head.
“No, no,” I whisper to myself. The last thing I want to do is cause any kind of trouble.
Jason wouldn't let me breathe if he hears of something like that. I don't want that.
I stand in the same spot, as they slowly shift back to their human forms. Three ladies. About the same size as me.
They turn to look at each other, and I don't miss their little cackle.
My eyes narrow into slits at that point.
“What do you want?” I ask, taking a step towards them. They don't take one back.
Of course.
“What are you doing here?” one of them asks, tipping her chin. It takes a lot for me not to roll my eyes.
“Everyone in the pack knows exactly why I'm here. Don't be asking stupid questions.”
They look at each other again, and I can see their patience wear thin.
“You're stealing the Alpha away from us. You know that, right?” another one asks, making me almost smile.
I should have known that Cassian is going to be their only reason for wanting to talk to me so badly.
“Your Alpha chose me. I didn't have to force anybody.” I turn my neck to the side, showcasing my mate mark. “You see this? He did this the first day of us meeting.”
They swallow hard. “You think we didn't hear about your powers of manipulation?” they demand. “We heard everything from the priestess.”
I feel my knees buckle at that accusation. It feels like I'm about to lose my mind at that point.
I should have known that they had something to accuse me of before they would even approach me.
“I didn't do anything like that.”
The one who seems to be their leader looks at me from head to toe. “Then prove it. The Alpha wouldn't leave the pretty women of the pack and go for something like you. A human.”
At that point, my jaw is already tightening, and my head is c****d to the side.
“You should know that I'm anything but just a human.”
As soon as I say the words, I can feel the hum underneath my skin intensify. The girls take a step back, their eyes wide.
I watch them with all the intensity in the world before they scramble back to wherever they came from.
My heart is pounding in my chest after that little encounter.
But they run away. That is proof of something, right?
Something tells me that they won't be challenging me for a long time.
I turn back slowly.
I didn't mean to do any of that. I don't want to do anything that will spread in the pack. And it is obvious that those girls won't be able to keep their mouths shut.
My legs are still shaking by the time I get back to the house. Thankfully, Cassian is there. I don't even know what I'm doing when I run up to Cassian, wrapping my arms around him.
“You went out again,” he said, but he doesn't unwrap his arm around me. “The guard told me what you did.”
I am the one pulling away from the hug this time. And by the time I look at him, I can see the amusement in his eyes.
“They don't see me as a human anymore, Cassian,” I say. Not with the things I've done.
Cassian's face seems to soften, and he brings a hand up to my cheeks.
“Neither do I.”
