CHAPTER 9 NOVA'S POV There is silence as soon as the words leave his mouth. I can feel tears prick the back of my eyes, but I can't let him see it. He doesn't have to know that his decisions are affecting me. I look away instead, ignoring the pain that is shooting up my leg. Cassian's eyes narrow at me, but I don't even care. The mate bond mark hums on my neck, and it is getting harder to breathe. He is pulling me back to him without actually doing anything. I can feel the possession. It is dark. For just a second, a shiver runs through my spine. Have I gotten into more than I can handle? I open my mouth to speak, forcing the words out of my mouth. “Were you ever going to tell me?” I ask, and he swallows. That is enough of an answer. “I was. I wasn't going to let them-” “That's bullshit,” I snap, grabbing the glass that is beside me, and hurling it at the wall. Cassian doesn't even flinch. It is almost like he expects it. By the time I look back at him, he only has his eyebrow raised. “You don't have the right to spoil things around here,” he says, and I am more than tempted to grab something else and hit it at the wall just to test his patience. But the only thing left is my camera. I can't do that. “Really?” I ask, getting to my feet and facing him. He looks down at the injury. “You're hurt, Nova,” he says in a clipped tone. “You should rest.” “You're slowly turning me into a thing. I've barely spent two days here, and I've not made one decision for myself.” “You're not a thing,” he says calmly. “Then I'm what? A weapon? A pawn? A thing?” As he grabs my wrist, I can feel a different kind of energy surge through me and before I even know what is happening, golden energy comes right off my hands. Golden strips of energy seem to flow around the room, and Cassian gets to his feet immediately. “Nova!” He is saying and I take a step back. He grabs my wrist, and I push him back with energy that I don't even know I have. He falls back on the bed, and I take a step back, looking down at my hands as they shake. “No, no,” I whisper. My hands are humming with too much energy. Cassian gets to his feet again, grabbing my wrists, and pinning me to the wall. He is breathing hard as he holds my wrists right above my head. I can feel his warm breath against my face. The energy is different between us. There is this heat that makes me want to grab his shirt and tear it apart. His lips are inches away from mine. “Go on,” I say in a soft groan that I don't even know I have. “Control me just as you control everything.” I watch as he leans down, claiming my lips as his. He kisses me violently, while I squirm against him on the wall. It is almost like he is trying to prove a point. I fight against his hold, trying to hold his hair. I want to touch him. I want to feel him more than anything. He holds my wrists even tighter, and I bite down on his lower lip. Hard enough to draw blood. Then I suck on it. I hear him hiss, and I can't help but smile. He pulls away, and his teeth seem to elongate. He leans down, trying to bite down on my neck again. I find myself turning to the side, giving him all the space that he needs. Then he stops midway, before letting me go. The injury on my leg seems to disappear at that point. The last thing I even feel is pain. “You're leaving the compound tonight,” he finally says and I open my mouth to argue. The look he gives me is enough to shut me up. “Where?” I finally ask, lowering my voice. “Somewhere safe,” he says, finally letting me go. “I'll figure it out. Just…let me handle things.” A part of me wants to apologize. He is taking on a human. Something that he has never done before. But now, even I am not sure that I am ever human to begin with. The power, being attracted to him as a mate. None of it is normal. That is when it suddenly hits me. He is choosing my safety over my choice. Over my stubbornness. I look down at my arm where he is holding, and there isn't even one atom of a mark there. Even though he is holding me firmly enough to make one. “I wouldn't hurt you,” he whispers, and I feel my throat close. He is proving it. Time and time again. I wrap my arm around myself, suddenly feeling chilly. “It doesn't matter,” I whisper. “You don't get to choose where I belong.” Cassian takes a step towards me again, making my back hit the wall. He brings his thumb towards the mate mark, and his hand rests there. I can feel the heat pool at the bottom of my stomach. I want him to kiss me again. To do more than that. Fuck, I am not supposed to be having thoughts like that. He is helping me. Keeping me safe. But at the same time, he doesn't hesitate to mark me. It isn't going to be long until we both lose control. But how long is it going to take? He gives me a small smile like he is having pity on me. That is enough to make me want to fight. But I don't. “You don't know how much I get to decide, Nova,” he says. “You don't get to decide anything.” I tip my chin, daring him. “I do. And I got that right the moment I marked you as mine.”
