CHAPTER 11
NOVA'S POV
Move.
I don't know where the sound comes from, but it is there in my head. It doesn't want me staying in a place, and it is getting harder to ignore.
My eyes are fixed on the window, and there is a different type of energy that is outside. Almost like it is calling out to me.
Cassian says not to go out. The last time I did…
I look down at my legs. It isn't that serious, is it?
I push myself to my feet, with my throat slowly closing up.
Faster.
My hands are over my ears, as I try to stop myself from even hearing the voice. It gets louder by the second.
I find my way to the living room, and it is just the way it was when I was last there. I wrap my shaky fingers around the doorknob, before pulling it towards myself.
The compound is eerily empty. There is this silence that doesn't seem natural.
As I stand outside, I realize that I am trying to make sure that Jason isn't there, more than I am trying to make sure that Cassian doesn't see me.
I almost chuckle to myself, but there is nothing funny about the whole thing.
I make my way forward, following the voice in my head. It is more demanding now, leading me through each curve and corner of the pack.
Before I know it, I am walking through paths that I didn't even know are supposed to be a part of the pack.
The paths that were clear with motorcycle tracks around it are soon filled with bushes that I am quickly walking through. That is when I realize that I am barefooted. But I don't care.
I can't turn back. Not with that awful sound in my ears.
The ground is filled with sticks and branches of trees that are long dried. I soon give up on being careful, and quicken my footsteps instead.
The branches dig into my feet. I am not crying out for some reason. My blood coats the branches.
Move.
The voice becomes a lot more insistent, and I am listening. Pushing myself further.
I look around, and I can tell that I am definitely around abandoned land. I am forced to swallow hard the second I notice it.
It immediately feels… sacred.
I take another look around, and I notice a different kind of room. As I step closer to it, I narrow my eyes at the ancient marks that seem to be plastered on the walls.
As I place my hands against it, I feel something surge through my whole body. As I open my eyes again, my face is lifted to the sky.
My eyes are wide, and I see my mother in my head. Her smile. The smell of her cookies. I can feel my own lips spread into a smile.
But the good memories don't even last. Before I know what is happening, they switch over to the bad ones.
The times when she smacks me for things my brothers do. The times when she tells lies that aren't even necessary.
The smile on my face is immediately wiped away.
Then another thing flashes. The golden strips of energy in the pictures. Strips of energy in the pictures in my camera.
I feel the energy surge out of me again, and I fall on my knees.
The energy is humming through me and for some reason, it feels like I haven't had enough. I lean in, touching the markings again.
Another wave of energy surges through me, and I can see packs burning. Red flames.
Wolves crying for help. Bowing. Dying. It is all happening so fast, that I can barely place my mind on which bit is actually happening.
The image of wolves bowing, flashes in my mind again, and the energy surges out of me before I collapse on the floor fully.
My face is practically on the floor, and my eyes slowly close as my world goes silent.
---
“Nova,” I hear someone call out to me, and my body jerks in response.
My mouth moves, but the words are stuck in my throat.
“Nova!” I hear the person scream again, and I turn to the side, with my eyes taking in a blurry figure of Cassian. His voice is coming like he is speaking under water.
“Cassian,” I whisper, and he pulls me to his lap.
“What are you doing here?” He asks, and I can feel the anger roll off him in steams.
That is enough to make me move away from him.
“How did you find me?” I ask, narrowing my eyes at him.
“Your blood is everywhere. You are f*****g leaving your scent. Being careless. And yet, I'm not supposed to make decisions for you?”
I swallow hard. He finally gets to his feet.
“What are you doing here?” He asks again. His tone is clipped this time.
“Finding what you've dragged into your life!” I snap, and his face softens immediately.
He pulls me towards him, checking my body for injuries, and I notice the way his hand lingers a little too long around my arms.
“You shouldn't be touching me for that long,” I say, and he looks at me, tipping my chin as he makes me look up at him.
“You're my mate. I have every right to touch you.”
I swallow hard. He isn't wrong.
The thing is that I want him to touch me. But at the same time, I am more worried about what I saw earlier. The little images that keep flashing in my mind.
I take a step away from him, and he pulls me towards him again.
That is when he looks back at the ancient marks that are still glowing..
“What did you do?” He asks, and his voice is low.
“I didn't do anything,” I whisper. For the first time, he doesn't look like he actually believes me.
“Tell me the truth,” he whispers back, and there are tears in my eyes as I speak again.
“I don't think I'm just your mate, Cassian.”
