CHAPTER 12
CASSIAN'S POV
I can feel my hands ball into fists at my side. I am not angry at Nova.
Hell, I don't think I can even be angry with her at this point.
But then, it is almost like the moon goddess is playing some kind of game with us.
I lean into her, and I get a whiff of her scent again. My wolf is about to lose his mind.
“What do you think you are?” I ask, and she swallows hard. I can tell that even she doesn't know.
“There are just these strings of golden energy that I see around. It was there. Even in the pictures that I have with my family, and self portraits of myself. But I don't want to think too much about the whole thing.”
My mind immediately goes back to the time when the elders say that her kind were wiped off the face of the earth. Her parents are obviously one of them.
I run a hand through my face, before I pull her up to her feet.
“Come on,” I say, and she frowns.
“Are you finally going to put me into hiding?” She asks, and I exhale sharply.
“Not everything is based off putting you in hiding. I'm taking you somewhere I should have taken you right from the beginning.”
As I grab her wrist, I notice how she cries out in pain, and I look down at her feet. How the sole is coated in blood.
That is another thing I can barely understand. She can heal others, but she can barely heal herself.
Her injuries aren't healing as quickly as they should, since she isn't human.
“You're injured,” I say, and she shoots me a look.
“I can see that.”
Before she can say anything else, I lean down, scooping her in my arms, and carrying her in bridal style.
My jaw clenches as we walk out of the abandoned part of the pack. There is something about the energy that is there. And yet, that is the exact place that Nova is led to. I can barely forget the glowing lights of the ancient markings. There is a lot more to her.
Members of the pack have their eyes on the both of us, but that is the least thing that I can care about.
She has my mate mark on her neck. They can talk all they want. She is mine.
Nova quickly wraps her tiny arms around my neck, with her eyes closed.
I hold her properly as I bring one hand to the door, knocking.
“I'll be right there!” The frail voice that I expect to hear, answers immediately.
The pack's priestess opens the door, and her eyes widen. She has barely ever seen me at her doorstep. She is usually summoned to the throne room.
But now, there I am. When she looks down at Nova, her eyes widen even more. Then she looks around, like there is something she is seeing, that I can't.
“Golden energy,” she says, pushing the door further. “Please come in.”
The moment we step into the lair, Nova's eyes flutter open.
“What happened to her?” The priestess asks, and I frown. There is something about the way she is acting like a mother hen.
She gestures for me to place Nova on a fluffy bed by the side.
I place Nova down, and the priestess immediately gets to work, rubbing all the necessary herbs on her feet.
All that is left, is for her to lean down and actually kiss it.
Nova has her eyes on her the whole time..
“I'm not human, am I?” She suddenly asks in a whisper, and the priestess takes a step back, with all her cowries jiggling along with her.
My eyes are fixed on the priestess as I wait for some response of any kind.
“You heard her,” I say in a clipped tone, and the priestess looks over at me.
“Can we go outside instead?” She asks, and Nova quickly shakes her head.
“You're saying whatever you want to say, here and now.”
The priestess looks at me again, and I give her a small nod.
“There's nothing about you that is human,” she whispers, before bringing her hand down to touch Nova's hands.
“What am I?” Nova asks, and for the first time, I can see her actually look scared. She looks nothing less than a child trying to find her identity.
“A golden wolf,” she says in a whisper. “Known generation after generations, for putting an end to the peace in packs. Yet, very powerful. And enchanting. They are known for seducing Alphas. Creating a fake mate bond. Especially when they don't have a family of their own.”
I can feel Nova's eyes on me. She is looking for the doubt of any kind. I don't look at her. I can't give her that benefit of doubt.
“I didn't do any of that,” she whispers, and the priestess nods, leaning down.
“I believe you,” she says, and Nova seems to calm down.
“I'd like to go to my room now,” she says, and I carry her up without hesitation.
The house seems more than cold as we both step in. I place Nova on the bed again, and she quickly turns away.
“I'll ask the maids to bring food for you,” I say, and she huffs.
I have a small smile on my lips, as I head out. But that doesn't change the fact that there is something that we are both trying to avoid…something that even the priestess has already confirmed.
I immediately head back to the priestess' lair.
Her eyes are wide the moment I step in.
“Is there more?” I ask, and she swallows hard.
“Yes, Alpha,” she quickly says. “She's more than able to break curses. Your curse.”
My throat closes up at that revelation.
I am about to ask how when the door is immediately pushed open.
“Alpha, Nova is nowhere to be found!” The omega that walks in, screams.
