CHAPTER 44

CHAPTER 44 CASSIAN'S POV I should have seen this coming with everything in me. Killian is moving faster than I expect him to. And he is winning her over slowly. There is something that has changed in the way he looks at her. In the way she looks at him as well. The initial hatred is no longer there. She looks confused. I know that Killian says he can feel her. Maybe… just maybe she can feel him as well, but she is keeping it to herself. Fuck, f**k, f**k. “Let's go to the room,” I say, and she gives me a small nod, allowing me to hold her properly this time. The both of us walk towards the pack mansion, and I slam the door shut. My own heart is thudding in my chest. Nova makes me feel things that I would never feel on a normal day. And maybe that is one of the things that makes her different. Maybe that is one of the things that makes me keep coming back to her. I can barely stay away. I turn to face her, and she folds her hands across her chest. She is either ready to fight, or she is just tired. I can’t tell which one it is. Her lips are pressed into a thin line. I take a step towards her, and she suddenly doubles over, putting a hand over her stomach as she laughs. There is nothing funny. Her laughter is sharp. She can’t be mocking me, can she? I wrap my hand around her tiny shoulders, as I make her look at me. “What’s funny?” I ask, and she shakes her head as she stops laughing. “Nothing. I just didn’t think we would ever get to this point,” she whispers, and I close my eyes. I don’t think we would get to this stage either. Is it something to be sad about? “I want you to stay away from Killian,” I finally say, and she c***s an eyebrow, like I just say the most irrelevant thing she has heard all day. She suddenly laughs again. It is sharper than the last. “I have no interest in talking to your brother. But don’t think you can just come here and control who I get to talk to,” she says, and I look down at her. I take a step towards her, and she doesn’t take one back. She only tips her chin. Of course, she is Nova. “He doesn’t have good intentions towards you,” I say, and she looks away, blinking hard. “I don’t think you have the right to tell me something like that, Cassian. You aren’t him. And I am my own person. I would definitely know when to take a step back.” Where is this coming from? “He already chooses Beatrice. And I see him wanting to choose you.” She narrows her eyes at me. “It doesn’t matter when I would reject him over and over again. I already choose you. Why do you think I would like to get mated to both you and your brother?” “Because,” I say, looking away, “that’s just what he wants. And it’s nothing new in this world.” She blinks, like she is trying to understand everything. I forget that she isn’t completely one of us. There are still a lot of things that she doesn’t know. “I don’t want any of that,” she says, closing the space between us. “But that doesn’t mean you should think you can control me, or who I get to talk to. I’m not interested in your brother.” I swallow hard. “Fine,” I mutter. “I just don’t trust what he wants from you.” “At least he doesn’t pretend that I’m fragile,” she fires back. She is fragile. She doesn’t know what danger she poses. She doesn’t know what she is capable of. I don’t know what I am doing when I wrap my hand around the back of her neck, pulling her towards me. I slam my lips against hers in a kiss, and she returns it just as hard, tugging at my hair. She parts her lips, and I slip my tongue in. Her tongue pushes against mine, like she is trying to take control. I press my hard-on against her stomach, and she gasps for air. Her chest suddenly thrusts forward, and I feel something shift. “Nova?” I ask, but she just stands in place, almost frozen. “Are you okay?” I hold on to her shoulders, trying to make her look at me. Her chest thrusts forward again, and her head tilts up towards the ceiling. Before I can even register what is happening, golden strips surround her, and energy suddenly surges out of her body, throwing me backwards and slamming me against the wall. My back hurts like hell by the time I manage to get back to my feet. Nova is still standing in place, and the energy surrounds her. She still doesn’t move, and she is barely blinking. But now, she is looking for me. I try to look past the golden light that is almost blinding. I can see the tears forming in her eyes. “Nova,” I call out softly again, and she shakes her head, like she doesn’t want me coming close to her. There is no way I am leaving her like that. I take a step towards her, and yet again, I am thrown backwards. Nova shakes her head with even more force, and the ceiling suddenly starts to rumble. Everywhere in the room, except the place where she is standing. I stay fixed in place as debris starts to fall around her. She still doesn’t move, and I can tell that she isn’t in control of what is happening. “Just calm down!” I scream, hoping she can hear me through the rumbling. “Just try to breathe. Please.” Her chest rises and falls heavily, but I can tell it isn’t helping. She is glowing even more, and her nails dig into her palms at her sides. She is breathing faster, and she looks terrified. I watch as a single tear slides down her face. Her knees buckle, but it still isn’t enough to make her collapse. She is still standing, locked in place. She doesn’t look like Nova anymore. It is like she is someone else entirely. She doesn’t look like my mate. But at the same time, I know I am connected to this woman somehow. There is something that has been pulling me to her this whole time. There is no running from it. She is mine. We belong to each other. “Cassian,” she whispers, her voice full of fear. I can’t touch her. Her power won’t let me. “Nova,” I whisper, and this time, my voice falters.
