CHAPTER 54
CASSIAN'S POV
I am sitting at the top center of the room, as I look down at the elders that are already demanding answers.
“We can't just keep supporting you while you keep making decisions that are not beneficial to the pack.”
I narrow my eyes at Elder Xavier. “And who told you that bringing Nova here is not beneficial to the pack?”
“The fact that the pack has had more wars than they would in a normal season. And all this has been happening ever since she came here. You can't deny that, Alpha.”
That isn't a lie. But I know that all they want is to take Nova away. They all want that. Killian, and them.
Greedy bastards.
“No,” I say. “I can't deny that. The wars are happening because of how precious she is. They all want her.”
“And she should be submitted for confinement. Doesn't that make more sense?”
“No,” I answer without a second thought. “She's here. And she isn't going away.”
They look at each other, and I can tell that they are about to suggest something that I am not going to like.
“We're suggesting that if you can't handle the pack, then maybe you can decide to allow Killian to handle this.”
I don't even know when I throw my head back in laughter. “Are you kidding me?”
The look on their faces tells me that they aren't.
“This meeting is over,” I say. “And this should be the last time that this is brought up.”
They don't say a word. They only get up, bowing slightly, as I head outside. The moment I am out of the building, memories from my childhood hit immediately.
How reckless Killian is. How charming. Somehow, that manages to get him things easily. Things that I have to work for. From the toys, to the perfect school, to Beatrice. Now he wants Nova. And the pack members are more than willing to hand him the pack.
I don't even know how I am supposed to feel about that.
It is no wonder that he was the favorite child. He is older.
Killian is successfully getting under my skin. I don't even know why he is at the pack in the first place. And now, Nova is withdrawing like her life depends on it.
She wants the freedom. But she isn't aware of what is happening out there. I can't just let her go like she doesn't matter. And she isn't willing to be patient either.
I would give anything to slam my fist into a wall at that point.
“I wouldn't advise you to,” Jason says behind me, and I turn to look at him. It is almost like he has poured cold water over the rage that I am feeling.
After spending years with people making me believe that I have failed, I don't know how I am supposed to act.
“It doesn't matter what I do now,” I say, and Jason c***s an eyebrow.
“You're focusing so much on your brother, that you're ignoring what Nova is becoming.”
“I'm not,” I snap, and he rolls his eyes.
“Yes, you are. You're treating her like she needs your permission to grow. And if you aren't careful, she will become rebellious. I don't need to tell you where that would head to.”
It is almost like my wolf finds it hard to even believe. He tries reaching her through the mate bond. And just the way she has done it before, she has blocked me out yet again.
In the past, I can constantly feel her reaching for me. Craving me. Brushing against me just to let me know that she is still there.
But now, she has shut me off completely, and I can barely even feel her. There is just silence and distance.
My chest is hurting more than it is supposed to.
“Where's Killian?” I ask, and Jason smirks like he is proud he is finally getting the reaction he wants, out of me.
“In his room.”
I don't even know why I am going there. All I know is that I need him to leave.
As I head into the house, the door is wide open. And Killian is there, he looks over at me.
“Here for a little drink?” he asks, and I feel my stomach turn.
I have never actually had a little drink with my brother. Not when the both of us are enemies right from day one. And I don't see the day that I would actually want a drink with him, coming.
“You have to leave,” I say, and he c***s an eyebrow.
“If this is about Nova, you're just scared that she will choose freedom over you.” His lips are set in a sneer. One that I want to wipe off his lips.
He is right somehow. Nova might have already considered leaving with him. I don't even want to think about it. She can't leave. At least not with him. She has to stay safe. I don't know how I am going to do that. Not with her stubbornness.
I don't even care. I just want him out. He opens his mouth to speak again, and my fist connects with his jaw so hard that I hear a bone crack.
The satisfaction I feel is out of this world. Killian staggers, and he suddenly looks over at me again. Right before he bursts out laughing.
I take in the blood that is dripping from his nose. He is in so much pain. Yet, he is laughing because he wants to prove something. Wants to prove that he is superior. Just as he has always done.
My hands are balled into fists again.
“You still don't understand what she is, do you?” He asks. “That's the reason why she's slipping through your fingers.”
As the words leave his mouth, I feel my shoulders slump. And for the first time, I feel genuinely powerless.
