I tried to pull away from Jace, but he only held on tighter.
"I had nothing to do with Eric's stupid little plan. I swear. I only told you to explain things to him because he kept bothering me."
My expression didn't change. "You guys are best friends. To me, there isn't any difference."
"I'm not like him!" Jace panicked. "He's a complete jerk. How can you even compare me to him?"
I almost cracked up. Bromance? Yeah, right. I wouldn't be surprised if every one of them had a separate group chat for trash-talking the others. I was trying so hard not to laugh that I ended up choking on my own breath and coughing into my hand.
Jace quickly pulled me into a spot away from the wind and asked anxiously, "Did you catch a cold? Come on, I'm taking you to the hospital."
I pretended my legs went weak and leaned into his arms while forcing myself not to cough too much. He instantly stiffened, completely at a loss, and awkwardly patted my back like he had never comforted anyone in his life.
There it was. The guilt. The sympathy. That overwhelming urge to pull me into his arms and protect me. I knew exactly what he was feeling, because that was the reaction I'd been aiming for all along.
Just then, I spotted Lucian marching over from the parking lot, so I immediately pushed Jace away. But Jace refused to let it go and kept insisting on taking me with him. The next second, Lucian appeared out of nowhere and sent a punch straight into his face.
I started coughing again because I was struggling so hard not to laugh. What could I say? I had a petty side. Watching someone I hated get punched was basically my guilty pleasure.
Lucian grabbed Jace by the collar. "Seriously, Jace? What is wrong with you? Why do you keep giving her a hard time? Has she ever even done anything to you?"
Only then did Lucian notice my brand-new coat and the shopping bags on the ground. His face changed instantly. He pointed at Jace and snapped, "What are you trying to pull? Charlotte isn't the kind of girl you're imagining. Stay away from her!"
Jace shoved him away with a cold expression. "Mind your own business. Get out of my way."
Lucian suddenly looked like he had cracked the case. "So you're the one who sold Eric out, aren't you? You've had your eyes on Charlotte this whole time? Seriously, have you looked in a mirror? What makes you think she'd ever choose someone like you?"
Jace let out a mocking laugh. "Listen to yourself, acting so close to her now. Wasn't it you who called her a poor nobody behind her back?"
Lucian instantly snapped and threw another punch. "Shut your mouth! Don't pin your crap on me! You fake saint. Are you seriously acting like you never said anything nasty about her?"
Jace raised his hand and slapped Lucian across the face. It didn't do much physical damage, but the humiliation was a direct hit.
"That's between me and her. It has nothing to do with you. She's sick, and I'm taking her to the hospital. I don't have time for your nonsense. Move."
Wrapped in my new coat, I stood there in the autumn breeze and enjoyed the drama unfolding in front of me. This was better than any show.
Just as Lucian and Jace were about to throw hands again over who would take me to the hospital, an unbelievable roar came from nearby.
"I can't believe I was this blind!"
Eric pointed at the two of them, his face twisted with anger. "You both swore you weren't the ones who betrayed me, and I actually believed you!"
He stormed over, looking completely betrayed and furious. What pushed him over the edge was that the moment Jace and Lucian saw the dangerous look on his face, they both stepped in front of me at the exact same time.
Eric let out a furious scream, "You've got to be kidding me!"
