Something Different
A man of his mid-thirties sighed as he went through the various emails sent by different department heads in his company. It was the same thing. Day-in and day-out. It’s not that he wasn’t grateful that he was able to achieve so much despite being so young. However, sometimes he wished that he could spare some time for actual social life. All his contemporaries were settling down and kept asking him about when he would settle down as well. He kept giving excuses that he had a company to run and he doesn’t have time to find the right person that he is willing to spend the rest of his life with.
He held his breath and slowly released it. Sure. He was a hopeless romantic. He always kept thinking about finding The One but he isn’t exactly putting much effort into it. Maybe he should take a vacation? Or a day off. Maybe Sunday? No one works on Sundays or weekends. Except him.
He was shaken out of his thoughts by a knock on his door. He called out “Come in” and waited.
“Mr. Copperfield” started one of the secretaries and greeted “Good afternoon sir”
“Yes?” John Copperfield replied with a tight smile
“The meeting is about to start sir” she replied then added “You usually come in fifteen minutes ahead of schedule and the meeting is about to start in five”
“Of course” John muttered before standing up and making his way out the door. Because I have become so predictable He thought before locking his door and heading to the meeting.
While John was preoccupied with board meetings how dull his life had become, another person was busy running to her job at the local cafe just across the building that John was working at. She thought of herself as a plain and boring individual but her life was about to change upon arriving at her place of work.
She quickly but stealthily opened the door to the cafe and made her way towards the back. She looked at her watch and saw that she had ten minutes before her shift officially starts. She quickly deposited her things inside the locker that was provided for all employees then quickly got dressed. Upon leaving the room, she was met with the smirking face of her employer.
“Cutting it close Caroline,” he said in jest as he gestured to several orders that were packed for her to deliver.
“Yeah” she smiled sheepishly as she ran a hand through her short dark hair as she gathered the orders.
“Sorry about that” she added “I was working on my thesis and I needed to see my advisor”
Her employer waved her off and replied “No worries. You aren’t late. Just deliver those to the building across the street”
Caroline grinned at him and made her way out the door and walked towards the building across the street. She pushed the glass doors open and showed the security guard her delivery. She was then given a badge and she made her way to the elevator. She delivered coffee and pastries about a dozen times to this building but today was the first time she made it past the fifth floor and to the tenth.
She whistled a happy tune as she made her way towards the boardroom. At least she hoped it was the boardroom. She then knocked and waited for someone to say that it was alright to go inside. She heard a muffled voice that told her to come in. With that, she nudged the door open with her foot and stepped inside the boardroom.
As she entered the room, she was instructed to place the deliveries at the table located at the corner of the room. While she was doing so, she caught some snippets of the conversation that was being had. About how the company was having difficulty tying up with other organizations from different countries.
She shrugged. It wasn’t her problem that they couldn’t figure out that they just had to tie up with a non-profit organization then proceed from there. She muttered this as she was on her way out and the man conducting the presentation heard her.
“You have something to say miss?” a snarky man said as she made her way out
Caroline shrugged then turned around and said “Well. I just said that you could tie-up with a non-profit organization then make your connections from there. I mean, doesn’t everyone know that non-profit organizations have the best connections?” she shrugged then added “But don’t mind me. I’m just the delivery person”
She locked eyes with whom she assumed was the actual leader then grinned before saying “Yup. A delivery person majoring in international studies and corporate management”
Caroline then waved and skipped out the door while humming a random tune.
John couldn’t help but fight down a chuckle. That was different but very amusing. Now if only he had more people like her in his company. It wouldn’t be that dull if that were.
