The Voice Beneath My Skin
The first time I heard the voice, I thought I was dying. Not the peaceful kind of dying people whispered about when they wanted to make death sound beautiful. I mean the terrifying kind. The kind where your heart forgets how to beat. The kind where your lungs suddenly become too small for the air around you. The kind where something ancient wakes up inside your bones and whispers your name like it has been waiting centuries to say it. It happened beneath a blood-red moon. And it happened on the night I was supposed to prove that I was finally a woman. I stood at the edge of the Silver Moon Pack’s ceremonial grounds, surrounded by hundreds of wolves dressed in black and silver. Everyone was waiting for the Moon Ceremony to begin. Everyone except me. I was waiting to be humiliated. Again. “Lena.” My foster brother’s voice came from behind me. I turned. Adrian stood several feet away, dressed in the formal black jacket every unmated wolf in the pack wore during the ceremony. His dark hair was pushed away from his forehead, and the silver emblem of the Silver Moon Pack gleamed against his chest. He looked like he belonged here. I never had. His eyes softened when they met mine. “You shouldn’t be standing alone.” I forced a smile. “I’m used to it.” His jaw tightened. “You know I don’t mean it like that.” “I know.” I looked away. Across the clearing, hundreds of wolves laughed and talked beneath strings of silver lanterns. Couples stood together. Mates stood together. Families stood together. Everyone had someone. I had no one. At twenty-one, I was supposed to have shifted years ago. Most wolves shifted around sixteen. Some shifted at fourteen. The rare ones shifted later. But twenty-one? That wasn’t late. That was broken. And everyone in the Silver Moon Pack knew it. I could feel their eyes on me. Whispers followed me everywhere. The wolf-less girl. The Alpha’s charity case. The human. That last one always hurt the most. Because I didn’t know what I was. I had no memories of my biological parents. No birth certificate. No family. No wolf. The only thing I had ever been told was that I had been found in the forest as a baby. Wrapped in a torn piece of white cloth. Left beneath an ancient tree. Alpha Darius had taken me in. Not because he loved me. Because, according to him, “even useless things can be put to work.” I had learned that lesson early. “Stop looking at them.” Adrian’s voice pulled me back. I looked at him. “Looking at who?” “Everyone.” He stepped closer. “They don’t matter.” I gave him a bitter smile. “Easy for you to say. You’re one of them.” He didn’t answer. Because he knew I was right. A deep howl suddenly echoed through the forest. The entire clearing fell silent. The ceremony was beginning. Adrian looked toward the massive stone platform at the center of the grounds. “Stay near me.” “I’ll be fine.” “Lena.” Something in his voice made me look at him. His expression was unusually serious. “If anything happens tonight, you run.” I frowned. “What could possibly happen?” He looked over my shoulder. His face changed. Fear. Real fear. I turned around. But before I could see what he was looking at, a bell rang. Once. Twice. Three times. The pack’s Alpha stepped onto the ceremonial platform. Alpha Darius. My foster father. The man who had spent twenty-one years reminding me that I was worthless. He raised his hand. The crowd immediately went silent. “Tonight,” he announced, “we gather beneath the Blood Moon to honor the ancient laws of our kind.” Cheers erupted. Darius smiled. Then his eyes found me. The smile disappeared. My stomach tightened. “Lena Vale.” Every head turned. I froze. Darius extended one hand. “Come forward.” My feet refused to move. Adrian whispered my name. I swallowed. Then I walked. One step. Two. Three. The crowd parted as I made my way toward the platform. I could hear whispers. “Is that her?” “The wolf-less girl?” “She’s actually twenty-one?” “She’s never shifted.” “Maybe tonight will finally expose what she really is.” I ignored them. Or tried to. When I reached the platform, Darius looked down at me. “Twenty-one years ago,” he said loudly, “this girl was found abandoned in our territory.” My hands curled into fists. “She has lived under our protection ever since.” Protection. The word almost made me laugh. Darius continued. “Tonight, the Blood Moon will reveal whether she truly belongs among us.” My heart hammered. I knew what he was doing. If I failed to shift tonight, he would have a reason to cast me out. Perhaps that was what he had wanted all along. “Place your hand on the Moonstone.” A large silver crystal stood behind him. I had seen it before. Every wolf in the pack had touched it during their first shift. I approached it. My fingers trembled. I placed my palm against the cold stone. Nothing happened. The crowd waited. Ten seconds. Twenty. Thirty. Nothing. Darius’s lips curled. Someone laughed. Then another person joined. Soon, the clearing was filled with cruel whispers. My face burned. I pulled my hand away. “Pathetic.” Darius’s voice was quiet. But I heard it. So did everyone else. I stepped backward. Then pain exploded beneath my ribs. I gasped. My knees buckled. Someone screamed. The world tilted. I fell. But I never hit the ground. Because something caught me. Not hands. Something invisible. Something warm. Something powerful. My body jerked. My fingers clawed against the earth. And then— A voice spoke inside my head. Finally. I stopped breathing. The voice was deep. Male. Not a whisper. Not a thought. A command. I looked around wildly. “Who said that?” Nobody answered. The crowd stared at me. Then the voice came again. Lena. My blood turned cold. It knew my name. “Who are you?” Silence. Then— You can hear me? My heart slammed against my ribs. I couldn’t move. I couldn’t think. The voice sounded almost surprised. Almost relieved. “Get out of my head.” A strange sensation moved beneath my skin. Like fingers tracing the inside of my veins. The pain intensified. I screamed. The ceremonial lights exploded. Darkness swallowed the clearing. People shouted. Wolves growled. Someone yelled for the guards. Then the moon appeared through the clouds. Blood-red. Huge. Beautiful. Terrifying. And suddenly, I could hear everything. Every heartbeat. Every breath. Every whispered thought. Hundreds of wolves. Hundreds of minds. Hundreds of voices. Then one voice drowned them all. Mine. I clutched my chest. Something was burning there. I tore open the collar of my dress and looked down. A black mark was spreading across my skin. A crescent. Surrounded by thin silver lines. The symbol seemed to pulse with my heartbeat. Once. Twice. Three times. Then the voice whispered: What have they done to you? I stared at the mark. “I don’t know.” For the first time, the voice sounded angry. Not at me. At someone else. They lied to you. “Who?” Everyone. My breathing stopped. The darkness around me shifted. For one impossible second, I saw a man. Not physically. A vision. Tall. Broad shoulders. Dark hair falling across his forehead. A sharp jaw. Eyes that seemed almost silver beneath the shadows. He stood in a ruined throne room surrounded by flames. He looked at me. Not through me. At me. Like he could see every wound I had ever hidden. Like he knew every secret I had never told anyone. His expression was cold. Commanding. Dangerous. But there was something else in his eyes. Recognition. Then the vision disappeared. I gasped. “Who are you?” The voice answered. Kael. The name sent a strange shiver through me. “Kael who?” Silence. Then his voice became colder. Kael Draven. My blood froze. I knew that name. Everyone knew that name. Alpha Kael Draven. The Black Thorn Alpha. The most feared Alpha in the northern territories. The man whose pack controlled more territory than any other. The man people said had killed three challengers with his bare hands. The man who had never accepted a mate. The man who had supposedly never loved anyone. I swallowed. “That’s impossible.” I know. “You’re not here.” Neither are you. “What does that mean?” He didn’t answer. Instead, something inside my chest tightened. I pressed my palm over the strange mark. It pulsed beneath my fingers. Kael’s voice softened. You need to leave. I looked toward Darius. He was staring at the mark on my chest. His face had gone completely white. Not angry. Not amused. Terrified. That frightened me more than anything. “Why?” Kael’s voice became urgent. Because he knows what you are. I stared at Darius. “What am I?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. Then— Run, Lena. A guard grabbed my arm. I screamed. The mark beneath my skin burned. Something exploded through me. The guard flew backward. The entire clearing went silent. I stared at my hands. I hadn’t touched him. I hadn’t even moved. Darius stepped backward. “No…” The word escaped him like a prayer. I looked at him. “What?” He shook his head. “You can’t be…” “Can’t be what?” His eyes were fixed on the mark. Then he whispered a name. A name I had never heard before. “The Moon Queen.” The crowd erupted. People ran. Wolves shifted. Guards surrounded the platform. Adrian pushed through them. “Lena!” I couldn’t move. I couldn’t understand what was happening. I looked down at my skin. The black crescent was glowing silver now. And beneath it, something moved. Not physically. Not exactly. But I felt it. A heartbeat. Not mine. Another heartbeat. Strong. Steady. Alive. Inside me. Kael. I swallowed. “Kael?” His answer came immediately. I’m here. The guards closed in. Adrian reached for me. “Lena, we have to go.” I stared at him. “Why is everyone afraid of me?” He didn’t answer. That was when I knew. He knew. He had always known. My entire life had been a lie. I stepped away from him. “You knew.” “Lena—” “You knew what I was.” “I was trying to protect you.” “From what?” Before he could answer, the forest erupted with howls. Not Silver Moon wolves. These were deeper. Hungrier. Closer. Darius shouted for the gates to be sealed. Too late. A massive black wolf emerged from the trees. Then another. Then dozens. The crowd screamed. I stumbled backward. Kael’s voice suddenly filled my mind. Listen to me. I couldn’t breathe. “What?” When I tell you to run, you run. A black wolf lunged toward the platform. I froze. Kael roared inside my mind. NOW! I ran. Branches tore at my arms as I plunged into the forest. Behind me, wolves howled. People screamed. The ceremony burned. My heart pounded. I didn’t know where I was going. I only knew I had to keep moving. Then a wolf appeared between the trees. Huge. Black. Its golden eyes locked onto mine. I stopped. It growled. I backed away. “Please…” It crouched. Ready to attack. Then Kael whispered: Don’t be afraid. The wolf lunged. I screamed. And something inside me woke. The forest exploded with silver light. The wolf was thrown backward. Every tree around me shook. I stood in the center of the storm, trembling. My eyes burned. My skin glowed. And for the first time in twenty-one years, I felt something moving inside my soul. A wolf. Not an ordinary wolf. Something ancient. Something powerful. Something that had been sleeping. Kael’s voice became almost reverent. Lena… I looked at my hands. “What?” There was a long silence. Then he said the words that changed my life forever. You’re not carrying my soul. My heart stopped. I’m carrying yours. And beneath my skin, something growled.
