Chapter 3: The Tower of Erevan

1001 Words
Dust covered the whole city, it slowly dissolved. The explosions stopped, as though it waited for the tower to rise first. Many of us who survived stared at the tower in awe, some in fear. I sat on the ground with Ji-hoon's dead body resting on my laps. My eyes were swollen because I broke down over Ji-hoon's death; I tried to widen them due to the fact that I was shocked by the tower which stood before me. “What is this!?” “Is this a dream!?” “What in the world!?” People questioned, I remained silent. The tower did look familiar. I knew I'd seen it from somewhere before. It came to me after a while; it looked like the tower in my dream, the tower filled with disfigured creatures, demons and other things I couldn't seem to find a name for. “Good evening humans?” A voice said. None of us could tell where it came from. We looked around, turning our heads to at least check if there was someone or something beside us. We found nothing. “Let your eyes remain fixed on the tower!” It ordered, this time it sounded like it was frustrated. The noise coming from every individual died down. “Now that I have your attention, allow me to introduce myself,” it said. “I am Erevan Thalos, the one who owns the tower that stands before you,” its words weren't dangerous but its voice sent fear into all of us who listened to it. “You all are surprised because a random tower just spawned from beneath the earth bringing disaster into the whole world?” “The whole world?” Someone questioned. “Whoever is saying this has to be lying right?” Noise erupted again. Erevan sighed, then before any of us could blink, we saw a man's head explode. We were silent because we just saw something we never expected to happen. Before we could finish processing what was before us, another person's head exploded. Then another, then another. “When I said…” another head exploded as it spoke. “...You should fix your eyes…” then another. “...On the tower…” then another. “...I meant it!” Erevan said as five more heads exploded all at once. No one screamed, no one panicked, they did that in their head. “And yes, the whole world,” Erevan’s voice gradually became calm. “You're not the only one who has this tower in your country, neither are you the only one's hearing my voice,” Erevan said. “Now I want you all to do something for me, are you ready?” Erevan questioned us. We were all confused, but despite our confusion, we never took our eyes off the tower, unless we wanted to end up like those lying on the ground without a head. “As you can see the gods are tired, and they need something to entertain them,” I couldn't see it but I could tell that it was smiling. “As a servant, who works for them, I came up with a way to entertain them,” Erevan said. “I created this tower for the purpose of entertaining the god's, so I'll need a few people to go into this tower and clear it,” It made it sound like easy, I thought it would be, but it wasn't. “Don't worry, there are no rules, but we will monitor your stats,” it sounded like a game. “Any objections?” No one answered, but no one in their right mind will object in such a situation. “Good, I will randomly select those who will participate in pleasing the god's.” A black crystal-like object floated in front of some people. Many took their eyes off the tower, but nothing happened, their heads were still on their necks. We were allowed to only look at the tower and the black crystal. “What you see before you is a crystal, its duty is to transport you into the tower.” Erevan said. “So if you see these crystals in front of you, then you have been selected to participate.” It sounded safe, that many of us forgot the disaster the tower caused just for it to rise from the earth. Without warning, our bodies slowly shattered into data shards like objects. My hands disappeared, I didn't want to go. I looked at Ji-hoon, as I found it difficult to leave his body, knowing it would lie flat on the ground. My chest heaved, my nightmare flashing before my eyes once more. In a short amount of time, it felt as though the truth of what was happening all came to me. That voice, Erevan's voice, sounded like the one I heard in my dream before something kills me and I wake up. I screamed, then the next thing I saw was pitch black. I slowly opened my eyes. I woke up in a place which looked like a prison in a police station. The prison bars were open, I climbed down the bed, and made my way out the door. I turned my head to the right. The way out was dark, the light bulb which flickered a few seconds ago completely went off. It smelt bad, and it was hot. I took off my suit and tied its sleeves around my waist as I began to walk. It was calm, I stepped on puddles which are formed by leaks from the ceiling. I walked for a few minutes before I made it to the reception table. My footsteps echoed as I walked towards a window. As I looked out the window, there was no sign of life except for a city which felt silent. I rubbed my eyes, before remembering I wasn't on earth anymore. I was selected into a so-called tower to please the gods.
