CHAPTER 9 SOPHIE I stare down at my hands, trying to ignore the pounding pain in the side of my head. I feel stupid for having drunk too much--more than I should have. And now I'm going to die because I'm too tipsy to pay attention, to realize that after leaving Jacob, I wasn't in the foyer alone. Someone else was there in the King & Sparrow offices, waiting. And now, I stare down at the cold, polished floor tiles beneath my feet as I wait for this guy to finish. To press the steel blade in his hand into my back and just get it over with. I'm not even scared or nervous. There's just a small part of me--a tiny, stupid part of me--that wishes I could live just a little bit longer to make things right.
