Chapter 52: Rain Freeze

1055 Words
A heavy mist grew around his hands as he started focusing on freezing the water so he could make the lizards show themselves. He wanted it to work according to his plan, but it took time for him to freeze rainwater. His power circulated inside his body, the air around him became cold. The rain around Luther slowed down and fell to the ground like flakes of ice. This was his first attempt. He failed. Luther couldn’t control a lot of rain at once, and it was hard to try and connect the droplets of water together. However, it took a lot less power for him now that he didn’t need to create the water himself. But the process was slower than he had hoped. As he did this, the lizards stood far away from him, and he knew they were planning their attack. Luther didn't have much time. He ignored his first failure and tried again. This time it didn't go so well. When Luther started to freeze the water, he sensed danger coming from his side. Luther was a little puzzled and took a few steps back. An Otyugh at that place pounced at him and disappeared when it hit the water curtain he was keeping around him. As he lifted cold air from the ground, he sensed a strange body temperature near him. There it is. How am I doing this? Luther had found a new ability. Heat induction. He could sense the creature’s body heat. Although it was coldblooded, its body was warmer than the air around it. That's why Luther could almost see it through the mist and darkness. Luther had another idea, but he needed to keep practicing his plan to freeze the rain in the sky. Now he could sense where they were, but his perception was not better than his eyesight, so he would still need to make them completely visible to fight them all off. He dispersed a cloud of cold air from his body. The cloud was about two meters around. The rain began to crystalize, but he soon found that ice was more difficult to shape than water. Maybe it would be better if he collected the rain together enough for him to shape it before he froze it. So that’s what he did. He collected the water together just enough to manipulate its shape. Controlling water was much easier than controlling ice. Water arrows accumulated around Luther. Although they were very small, he was creating more by the second. After he had enough to create ten arrows, Luther felt a little sluggish. Controlling all these arrows was more than a test of his power. It was a test of his energy. The mental strength of a bronze level erazer was one and a half times that of a normal person, but it was still not enough. The process seemed very slow, but it was all happening much faster than it felt. When Luther spread the frigid mist around him, he felt an unusual heat signature from his right side. "There you are." Luther smirked. He sent ten ice arrows flew to his right at once. With nowhere to hide and no space to dodge them, the lizard was hit badly. The arrows were not very strong, but there were a lot of them. Once it was hurt, the Otyugh revealed itself. Luther was ready for this and gripped his sword. Mutants had very adaptive instincts during doomsday. Their fight-or-flight response was acutely attuned to the amount of danger they were in. Luther didn't give it time to think. Creatures like the Otyugh had very weak defenses in a fight. Luther didn’t have any difficulty hopping through the reptile’s body. The two halves of the Otyugh fell to the ground. Its thick, blue blood mixed with the rain. He had only killed one. There were still three left. Now that he found a winning strategy, killing the others would be simple. He tried to widen the perimeter of his frost cloud. If they attacked him all at once, he wouldn’t have enough arrows to take them all out. Thanks to the lizard’s body heat, Luther was able to avoid two of them while he focused his efforts on one at a time. Watching as Luther slaughtered one of their own, the three remaining Otyugh became furious and impatient. They attacked from the front, back, and left side at once. Under the cover of his frost, Luther sensed the directions of their attacks. He flashed to his right first and froze an arrow from the rain to attack the Otyugh from his front. Now that he had practiced this technique, he was freezing the rain much faster than before. Soon, a row of ice arrows came down in front of him. Several ice arrows hit the invisible Otyugh, revealing its body. The Otyugh sensed that something was wrong and it tried to retreat. But it was too late. Luther didn't give it chance to run or hide. An icicle swiftly pierced through the Otyugh. But it wasn't dead yet. It screeched loudly, its cry sharp and harsh. Luther stabbed at it with his sword and its cry was silenced. "Okay, who’s next?” Luther turned and looked out at the rooftop. Although his eyes saw nothing, he was very aware that there were two more mutant lizards up there with him. They had become became restless. It seemed that they were afraid of Luther. They were retreating, looking for some means of escape. Just then, a grunting sound came from the water tank. The Otyugh shuddered and stopped in their tracks. They became frantic and took a defensive stance. They were still animals, and they still felt fear. The Otyugh was not a predatory species. They scavenged for food and only fought humans when they were threatened or hungry. They knew humans were bigger than themselves, so they’d only hunt when it was necessary. But from this sound, they seemed to overcome their fear of Luther. He was worried and looked at the big water tank. "What the hell is that? Is it their king?" The Lizard King was different from normal mutant beasts. Because the pig king that Luther killed in Cedar Creek had not been a mutant for a long time, Luther was able to defeat it relatively easily. But now, it had been the doomsday for some time. Everyone had chosen a place for themselves. Humans would now have to face well-developed zombies and mutant beasts. And now, any Beast King could be one of the most powerful creatures in the world.
