Chapter 53: Save Me

1146 Words
The chances of running into a Beast King was about 0.01%. That was, you would find only one Beast King in ten thousand mutants. Luther thought he should feel special. In only a short time, he has run into two of these kings. Destiny certainly had a wicked sense of humor. Maybe this was the price he had to pay for his rebirth. While these thoughts flowed through his mind, Luther kept his eyes on his surroundings. Although he had no idea what was inside the water tank, he knew it wasn’t good. He knew he had to finish this fight as soon as possible. After gaining some momentum, the Otyughs rushed at Luther. Luther could sense the heat fluctuations of the two lizards, and they came from the same direction. They were going to fight him as a team. This made Luther have to choose how he would kill them. Water curtain or ice arrows? Instead, he utilized both powers at once. The water curtain slowed their attack. He sent a hailstorm of frozen arrows from the rain down on them, revealing them. Luther clenched his sword now. He had to be fast. The lizards weren’t far away from Luther, and they ran within a few feet of him. The Otyugh became frantic and refused to run away. They screeched as they ran to him, angry and ready to kill. In only the blink of an eye, a flash of light flew down on them, and in an instant, the creatures were silenced. One blow, four parts. Natural instincts are still no match for combative tactics. Sheathing the sword, Luther remembered this teaching, ignoring the bodies of the lizards on the rooftop. Natural instincts were like AP (attack power). Once they sustained AD (attack damage), they would be nothing more than easy prey for a stronger creature. Even Luther needed time to learn the skills he needed to kill an Otyugh. If an erazer that had only natural instincts to fight with, they would have lost the fight and an Otyugh would be feasting on them by now. This whole battle lasted around five minutes, but it felt like he had been fighting for hours. Luther came back from his thoughts and looked back at where he had last seen Eric. Luther was surprised. Eric couldn’t have fought off those things on his own. He was shocked to find that Eric was still alive. He killed an Otyugh. How did he do it? That's impossible. He managed to drag himself always way back to the top of the stairwell. Luther had to choose now if he would kill Eric or just let him be. But he quickly sensed a figure behind Eric, and he knew that Eric was going to die. At the back of the rooftop, Eric, with a hunger for life, had climbed to the entrance of the corridor. He saw the door wide open and he looked at it as if he had seen the gates of heaven. "I did it! I’m going to get out of here." Eric was so excited, and he turned back to see if Luther had died. He hoped Luther was dead or at least too weak to stop him. Back when he first joined Oliver’s team, it was only for protection so he wouldn’t have to fight. He never missed an opportunity to hide from a battle. From the very beginning, the tea was made up of six people. Zeke, Eric's brother, was wounded by a zombie. But it wasn’t his fault. Eric had pushed Zeke to the zombie at the last second. Zeke distracted the zombie for him, and Eric survived. Eric faked it well. When Zeke was bitten and began to mutate, he had to be destroyed. So, Oliver killed him. But later, Eric put on a show of anger at Oliver, scolding him for killing is brother. He put on an act well enough to distinguish any doubt in the team’s minds. Eric was pleased with himself every time he fooled the others. "This is the end of the world. Teamwork and brotherhood are all bullshit. Only my life matters. I need to take care of myself. Luther was a fool and he only helped me survive every battle since he joined this team.” Eric was in so much pain, and he began to mutter every evil thought in his head as he crawled. He wanted to see how badly Luther had been hurt. He craved to see him in agony. He looked back and found that Luther was unharmed. In fact, he was on his feet and watching him! "How...how did he kill all those monsters?" Not only was he surprised by Luther's power, but seeing the battle was over frightened him. He had been injured. If Luther chose to kill him now, there was nothing he could do but submit. Eric looked at Luther with fear, but Luther didn't move an inch. With only a smirk, Luther looked at him with nothing but indifference, as if he were already dead. No. This can’t be. How could Luther still be alive? Why is he smiling like that? However, Eric didn't have time to think about it, because he quickly realized there was something shrouded by the rain that he had missed. As he followed Luther’s gaze, a chill ran up his spine. He knew why Luther was smiling. "There’s something behind me…” Eric hyperventilated and he tried to calmly climb away, but inside he was panicked to his core. In a short while, his torso had climbed back into the stairwell, but he was too late. An Otyugh appeared behind him, controlling a much larger zombie corpse. It fell on Eric. Eric was thrown out of Luther’s view. Luther couldn't see what was happening, only that Eric was struggling, thrashing his body around. This was followed by his screams, which slowly became coarse and hard to hear until there was nothing more than a gurgle. Soon, Eric wasn’t moving on his own anymore. His body was only being dragged through the rain. Eric was dragged towards the big water tank. Luther now saw him again. He was torn apart in so many places. His body was full of many holes, and his blood drained through them. A large red puddle formed beneath him and spread all the way to the water tank. But Eric was still barely breathing. Luther could see his lips trembling as if he were extremely cold. His bloodshot eyes had no light in them. His mouth opened slightly, but he couldn't spit out a word. Reading his lips, Luther knew that he was saying "Save Me". But Luther just stood there and watched Eric being dragged by his dismantled legs to the tank. The zombie lifted him up like a toy and tossed him through the broken hole in the water tank. Luther watched as his body was stuffed through the hole that was much smaller than his body. His mouth hung open and his face was covered in red, and the last noise he made was an almost silent gasp for life.
