Chapter 43: Surrounded in an Arcade

1167 Words
The fear in the group caused them to panic. Their eyes were wide, and they felt like they were going to die.   The game room was filled with over thirty zombies, making the space seem very small. They saw only the rotting faces of infected people.   Eric thought he was going to die, and Elena felt powerless. Surrounded by so many zombies, it seemed almost useless to fight when they were so outnumbered.   Luther could tell that they were losing the fight, and he ordered, "Don't give up. It wasn't easy to get here. We can take them. Go for their heads!”   Luther started to fight with his powers. Three icicles rose from the ground, running straight through three zombies. Two zombies were stabbed right through their heads and died immediately. There was a zombie impaled by an icicle, keeping it firmly where it stood. It tried to move but it couldn’t.   Luther's powers had level 5 strength and were exercised well. The icicles formed a two-meter wide fence, slowing down the other zombies.   It would have been easy for Luther to fight the zombies on his own, but now he worried for the sakes of the others in the group. Scanning the room, Luther's eyes lit up at the counter in the middle of the hall, a natural higher ground to fight from.   "Come with me to the counter and we’ll turn it into a fort."   Luther's words were like giving driftwood to someone who had fallen overboard, and the others nodded in understanding.   As Frank and the rest of the pack fought off the zombies, even Eric began to chop down at one zombie.   Soon they reached the coffee counter.   The counter was over four meters long and one meter wide, with at least 20 square meters of living space on the inside, walls on the left and back sides, and an exit on the right.   Luther propped up the counter and jumped behind it. Eric slipped nimbly in on the right. Frank was the third one inside. It was Elena who got stuck in between three zombies.   Luther quickly launched an ice arrow to help Elena kill a zombie. Oliver, who was hanging from the ceiling, helped her kill another zombie. She killed the third one by herself and finally managed to escape from the horde long enough to climb over the counter.   Seeing that everyone was safe there, Luther used his power to cover a five-meter perimeter around the counter with ice.   The biting cold hit the survivors behind the counter. And even though it was frigid, it had a refreshing effect for them. Their drooped spirits from the intensity of the battle were instantly replenished.   Elena's eyes lit up and she couldn't help but exclaim, "The ice is slowing down the zombies. Luther, that's amazing!"   The others didn’t catch on as quickly as she did, so after she said this, they were both overjoyed.   "So, we’re going to win?”   Luther couldn't take his eyes off the oncoming zombies.   The first wave of zombies had stepped on the ice and slipped, hitting the ground hard. Before they could get up, the zombies behind them began stepping on their bodies. When there were no bodies to use as stepping stones, the second group of zombies also fell to the ground, but by then the ice had been covered up.   But even incapacitating ten infected ones was a great feat.   A few eyes glinted as Luther said, "Don't get too excited. There are still 20 left. I'll take the right entrance and you'll take the front desk."   This counter was curved, and the left side had its back against the wall to form an angle. This meant that the zombies could only attack from the right. Six zombies rushed over to the open side on the right. Although there were a lot of them, Elena knew they could take six at a time.   Two dozen zombies stepped on the bodies of the first ten that had fallen and hit their heads, hurtling toward them. Because there was so little space to maneuver, only the first six could get through while the others were crammed behind them.   Luther did not wait for the zombies to rush forward. He pulled out his sword and cut off the heads of the first two. They died instantly, while the other four were killed by the others, with the help of Oliver from the ceiling.   The other six zombies suffered the same fate.   "This is very effective." Frank couldn't help chuckling.   As he said this, something cursed and unexpected took place.   A wad of long, dark hair worked its way through the pile of zombies and wrapped itself around Frank's thick neck. The others were shocked. Frank was pulled forward by its long hair and his big body fell off the counter and was dragged into the zombie horde.   "Frank!”   Elena cried out. Frank spoke too soon as death was waiting around the corner for him. No one expected anything like this.   The zombies didn't hesitate. They saw Frank come towards them. One of the zombies swooped in, bit Frank, and tore out a huge chunk of his flesh, spattering blood.   Frank let out a cry.   The zombies huddled around him, and Frank's screams got louder and louder until they stopped in an instant.   His body was a terrible sight, not a single piece of it left intact. Not even his face was recognizable. He was left a bloody mess.   Luther wasn’t watching Frank now. His gaze fell beyond the zombie horde on a long-haired ghost. Unlike the other monsters, this one had long, loose hair, some of which was tied around Frank's neck.   A Hair Hime!   This was a mutant creature that Luther recalled from his past. They evolved from ordinary zombies. Their hair could stretch and grow, and their main attack was using their long hair to grab their enemy and drag them to their doom.   Although their attack force was not very strong, their control over their hair was very fast, especially from behind a horde of zombies. It didn’t have to make the kill, it just had to reel in its prey.   Elena and Oliver were both angry over the loss of another one of their teammates. Oliver was sad, but he didn’t stop fighting. Elena's eyes were filled with tears.   Frank's been with her since the first day, and they've been through so much. It's hard to see Frank being bitten to death by a zombie, and she couldn't do anything about it.   And now there was no way to bring him back. Elena turned her sadness into anger and killed the zombie in front of her as her eyes became red.   The Hair Hime attacked again and seemed to find Elena who had turned to blind rage. A section of its hair shot out, and just as it was about to touch Elena, Luther grabbed the lock of hair in his fist.   No one expected Luther to catch it, and Elena feared for his life now. She knew that if he died now it would be her fault. Deep down, she could not help thinking that she had killed him, and her tears rolled down from her eyes.
