Chapter One – The Shadows Return
Lena Vale stood at the edge of Moonveil Forest, her heart pounding like a caged bird. The cold wind curled around her, whispering secrets only the night could understand. She shouldn’t be here. Every instinct told her to turn back, to forget the pull deep in her chest. But how could she, when the shadows carried his name?
Tomorrow, she was to be bound to Cassian Reed, the warlock her mother had chosen for her. A union of power, a legacy to uphold. Love had no place in such matters.
But love had always been her undoing.
A rustle in the trees sent a shiver down her spine. The shadows thickened, curling around the trunks like living things. Then, as if woven from the very darkness itself, he stepped forward.
Lena’s breath caught.
“Dane?” she whispered.
His name was a forbidden spell on her lips. He had been banished, marked for death, for the crime of loving her. He was taller now, his body lean and sharp, etched with the cruel lines of survival. His once warm brown eyes now glowed silver, and dark veins laced his forearms, pulsing with something dangerous.
“I told you I’d find you.” His voice was rough, edged with something no longer entirely human.
Lena’s fingers trembled. “What did they do to you?”
Dane lifted a hand toward her, hesitating. Then his fingers brushed her skin, and a jolt of dark energy crackled between them. He pulled back with a grim smile.
“I was cursed.” His silver eyes darkened. “And they don’t want me to break it.”
Lena’s heart twisted painfully. “Who did this?”
Dane’s jaw clenched. “Your coven.”
The truth struck like a blade. Her mother. The elders. They had turned him into something other, something twisted by their magic. Because he had been human—or had been. Because their love had been forbidden.
Her fists curled. “Why did you come back?”
A muscle in his jaw ticked. “Because I won’t let them take you from me again.”
Her breath hitched. A distant howl echoed through the trees—not a wolf, something darker. The wind shifted, carrying the scent of magic and danger. Dane tensed. “They know I’m here.”
Lena took a shaky breath. “Then we need to leave. Now.”
Dane hesitated. “You’d run with me?”
She met his gaze, the choice already made. “I’d do anything to save you.”
The shadows stirred again. Time was running out.
Chapter Two – The Price of Desire
Lena gripped Dane’s hand, her pulse hammering as they fled into the night. The trees blurred around them, the scent of damp earth and magic thick in the air. Every step away from the coven’s grasp felt like a defiance, a dangerous thrill that set her blood on fire.
“They’ll track us,” Dane murmured. “Your mother… she won’t let you go so easily.”
Lena swallowed hard. She knew. Lady Vale wasn’t just the coven’s leader—she was a force of nature, a storm that destroyed all in its path. And now, Lena was the traitor.
They reached the ruins of an old sanctuary, its stone walls crumbling under the weight of time. The moment they stepped inside, Dane staggered, his breaths ragged.
Lena caught him. “Dane!”
His body burned beneath her touch, his scent a mix of dark spice and something untamed. He groaned, pressing his forehead against hers. “The curse… it’s spreading.”
Fear twisted inside her, but something else stirred deeper, hotter. Her fingers traced the dark veins pulsing at his throat. “How do I help?”
Dane’s eyes met hers, molten silver in the dim light. “You shouldn’t have come with me.”
“I couldn’t let them take you again.”
His lips parted, his breath warm against her cheek. “Lena…”
The way he said her name sent a shiver down her spine. Every rational thought told her to pull away, to think of the consequences. But his hands slid to her waist, his touch electric, branding her through the thin fabric of her gown.
“Tell me to stop,” Dane murmured, his voice thick with restraint.
She didn’t. She couldn’t.
Instead, she tangled her fingers in his hair, guiding his lips to hers. The moment they met, fire erupted between them, raw and aching. His hands gripped her tighter, pulling her flush against him as his mouth claimed hers with a hunger that had been denied for too long.
A low growl rumbled from his chest as he deepened the kiss, his tongue teasing hers, tasting, devouring. Magic crackled in the air around them, swirling like a storm. Her pulse pounded as she melted into him, the world outside vanishing into shadow.
But shadows could not be ignored. The moment shattered when a distant spell ignited the night, sending a warning blast through the trees.
They had been found.
Dane tore away, his eyes flashing with fury. “We need to go.”
Lena, breathless, her lips swollen from his kiss, nodded. “Together.”
As they fled into the darkness, the fire of their stolen moment burned between them.
And so did the danger.
Chapter Three – Tempting Fate
The rain came suddenly, a cold sheet of silver that soaked through Lena’s gown, making it cling to her skin. The forest pulsed with unseen threats, magic lingering in the damp air. Dane’s grip on her wrist was firm, his warmth a stark contrast to the chill sinking into her bones.
They ran until the sanctuary was nothing but a distant ruin swallowed by mist. Dane led her to a hidden alcove beneath a jagged rock formation, the entrance veiled by thick vines. He pushed them aside and guided her inside, the space barely large enough for them both.
Lena pressed a hand against her chest, struggling to steady her breath. “How much time do we have before they find us?”
Dane’s jaw was tight, his silver eyes scanning the darkness beyond. “Not enough.”
A tremor ran through him. His shoulders tensed, his breathing ragged. Lena moved closer, watching as he pressed a hand to his chest, his veins darkening once more.
The curse.
“Dane,” she murmured, reaching for him.
He jerked back. “Don’t.”
But she ignored him, stepping forward until their bodies nearly touched. “Let me help you.”
His hands fisted at his sides. “It’s dangerous.”
Lena exhaled slowly, reaching up to cup his face. “So am I.”
Dane shuddered at her touch, his control unraveling. “Lena…” His voice was a warning, but it was too late. She was already pressing her lips to his, willing him to take whatever he needed.
And he did.
With a groan, Dane crushed her against the rock, his hands sliding over her rain-slicked skin. His mouth devoured hers, raw and desperate. The magic between them pulsed, wild and untamed, feeding the storm outside. His fingers traced her spine, sending heat spiraling through her, melting her into him.
For now, there was no curse. No coven. No fate waiting to tear them apart.
There was only this.
And Lena was ready to risk everything for it.
