Chapter 1
Igor POV
I was sleeping when suddenly I was awakened by a call on my cell phone. Checking the time on my alarm clock, I began wondering who in the world would call me at 4:45 in the morning. I grabbed my phone and noticed the caller I.D. said it was one of my pack members, Auroa. She was relatively new to the pack; her husband and 4-month-old daughter arrived at our pack house in desperate need of asylum. Apparently, their daughter started showing signs of being magical soon after she was born. Their old pack was very against this and told them that they had to either suppress Athenas' abilities or there would be grave consequences. We instantly took them in and started assessing what exactly was happening with little Thena. She is the best little girl. We are still unsure what is going on with her, but, after 5 months, we have discovered she can link with those close to her which right now is mostly babbling, but sometimes there is words when she is linking with me.
I answered the phone but only heard a baby crying. Now, we had a suspicion that their old pack might come back for them, but we had patrols around their house every night to ensure their safety. I link those who are on patrol and make my way over there. Clearly, something was really wrong or she wouldn't have called me. Apollo was going crazy thinking the baby had been hurt by someone. I reassured him by saying she wouldn't be crying if she was hurt, which seemed to settle him down. I swear after this little girl wound up on our doorstep, Apollo has taken to her like our own. Maybe because Grace and I have had a very hard time with having our own children, but I have told him we will when the Moon Goddess is ready for us. I decide to let Apollo run us over to their house because I knew he wouldn't be happy until he saw nothing was wrong and it was all an accident or misunderstanding.
Upon arrival , I can smell the iron in the air and see our patrol officers pacing on the porch of their house along with my gamma Duncan. I immediately shift back and changed before heading towards the house to question those tasked with protecting this family. The first person I question is Duncan my gamma.
"Mind explaining to me what the h*** happened here?" He could tell by the tone of my voice I was not pleased but that was mostly Apollo, then I got a link from the tiniest voice.
Alpha Iggy, please help my mommy and daddy
This caused me to get angrier than I planned as I let out a low growl.
"Alpha sir, we are so sorry but Auroa and Ander were attacked when we were switching patrols. When the new patrols got here they had no idea that an attack had happened until you linked us," Duncan was trying to plead his case.
"Then why do I have a baby linking me to help her mommy and daddy?" That seemed to get him into gear because I could see him linking the patrol officer who was in charge tonight.
"Sir, this attack was clearly planned for weeks. Gunnar just linked me and stated that when they switched patrols they always stagger to keep people watching the house. Tonight, we had one less patrolling officer and during what should have been a supervised change there was no one here. They were able to unlock the door with the spare key and silently attack as the change occurred. Unfortunately, there is no saving of her parents that we can do, but on the brightside, they were able to fend off their attackers before they succumbed to their injuries, which must have been when Auroa called you. We have looked at little Athena and are pleased to tell you she is perfect as ever."
When Duncan told me that I broke down, Apollo started going crazy in my head about how Thena had no one now. Instead of putting her into our foster system, I decided that we would adopt her as our own, which should be easy since she is only 9-months-old and i know Grace has always wanted a baby. I ran inside, tears coming down my face to look for our little girl. I carried her out with her eyes covered so she wouldn't have to see what was happening. It appears that their old pack has teamed up with the local witches and are using them to help in the fighting because these bodies do not smell of wolves.
When Thena and I arrived to the pack house, I linked my wife to tell her I had some news. She was initially groggy and confused but agreed to meet me in my office. Once she was in my office, I handed her little Thena and explained what had just transpired.
"So you're telling me this sweet little girl is an orphan?" My wife's eyes were welling up and I could feel through the bond how hurt she was for this sweet baby.
"Not exactly," she stared at me in confusion as I continued, "See, when I arrived, Apollo was begging to see her. We knew her parents were injured but he wanted to make sure she was okay. When I found out her parents were dead, I needed to see her. Once i reached her room and held her, Apollo begged me to keep her as our own pup, which I had already decided on anyway." She was still so confused, so I made it a little more clear "Meet your daughter honey, I am sorry it is in these circumstances, but she deserves parents who can protect her like her birth parents did." I didn't have the heart to tell my wife that Auroa and I had already discussed what would happen to Thena if something were to happen to the two of them since she can't exactly go pack to her family in her old pack.
*16 years later*
Athena's POV
I walk into the pack house after school and I go to talk with my dad before i start on my dreaded self reflection essay for school.
"Hey dad, how was your day?" I always ask him how his day was, since I may become alpha one day I need to know how running a pack is.
"Hey Thena, it was good, mostly uneventful. We did have some strange activity at the edge of our land, but the patrols reported back that nothing was there, just a message with your name on it." He held up a envelope with my name scrawled on it.
"Why would that be left on the edge of the pack lands?" I take the envelope hesitantly and open it. Inside in weird streaky letters it says 'Be prepared for us to finish what our parents and your parents started.' I was visibly confused and held it to where dad could read it. "What does this mean? What did you and mom start?" Judging by the look on his face, and my ability to feel how he is feeling, I am not prepared for what is to come.
"Okay, honey, I need to be straight with you. Your parents brought you here from the Blue Moon Pack. When you were a baby you showed your ability to link and this scared the Alpha of that pack. He feared you were a witch and not a wolf at all. So he told your parents to suppress these abilities or bad things could happen. Your parents had heard of our pack and how generous and loving we are and came for help. We were going to work with you guys on your abilities. Unfortunately, your parents and you were attacked one day, but your mom saved you from being harmed and alerted me to something being wrong. When i picked you up I knew I had to save you, which is what myself and Grace, your mom, did. I am sorry we didn't tell you sooner. We were afraid of how it could affect you."
That's when everything at school makes sense. Some kids have called me a charity case. I often get told I am of no Alpha blood but I always assumed that was because of being a girl, not because of this. I stand up and go to leave. "Dad, before I leave, I wish you had told me sooner. I still love you but I am going to need some space for now." I run to my room, slam the door closed and start to cry. Why now? Why me?
After i have finished crying, I sit up and get to work on my stupid self-reflection essay goddess. I hope we don't have to read these out loud. Once I finish the essay, I decide to read it over to ensure that it is perfect for school tomorrow.
I am about to turn mating age and, honestly, I have no idea what I am supposed to feel. I don't really feel close with many children my age. The only people I really hang out with daily are my best-friends, Ezekeiel, who is the beta's kid, but he prefers Zeke and Alexanderia, but I call her Andie even though no one else does, and every time I call her that name, she blushes. We even have best-friend bracelets with our initials on them. I have been training every day to become the next Alpha since I'm an alpha kid. Everyone tells me it's dumb because girls can't be alphas, but I'm gonna show them. I also have special powers that no one else in my pack has. I can link anybody from any pack, no matter if I know them or not. I also heal way faster than everybody else in the pack. I can also feel what those around me are feeling. I have spent the last 12 years honing these abilities and it has been a wild ride. The only downside to these abilities is I know, and have for years, that my best friend is in love with me and I am unsure of how I feel. I love them both so much and I cannot imagine hurting them or my parents if they were to find out who I think the moon goddess is blessing me with as a mate. Oh and to top it all off, today my 'dad' told me that I am adopted and my parents died from a weird attack that could be coming for me now.
After reading it I can concur that it is perfect, but I really hope that we don't have to read them out loud. I also hope Zeke or Andie don't decide to ask to read it. Goddess help me.
