What happens when all the lights go out? When the light gets casted out and shadows fill every corner, and all you can see is the dark nothingness that causes your other senses to heighten; what happens? This isn't a story of a girl that overcomes her fear of heights and spiders. This is a story of a girl that usually runs away from her fears because she knows that the shadows aren't shadows and the bumps in the night aren't just bumps. Her mind is filled with nightmares that she can never get rid of.

Emily stood in the nothingness, the only light radiated off her. Her black hair blended in with the night, but her blue eyes and pale skin stuck out like a sore thumb. There was nothing but miles and miles of darkness and pure silence. "Hello?" She called but the only reply was her own echo. Usually, she was never alone in her nightmares. She was always being followed, always something breathing down her neck. He was always there, he never left; but he was always sending his pets to do the dirty work. But this nightmare, there was nothing. No flaming wolves with glowing red eyes, no demons with their crisp burnt flesh...just nothing. She wandered, searching for some form of escape. The farther she went, the colder it got.
"You're getting colder, Emily..." His voice growled. She froze, wondering what took him so long to show up. She spun around searching for him. She expected to see his glowing yellow eyes and razor-blade teeth but still, all she could see was the thick darkness. He had no name, although she called him Alastor. The first time he appeared to her, he was beautiful.
"I have no name," he said. "Nor is this truly my natural form."
"I'll name you, if you'd like?" He smiled at her.
At first, she wanted to give him a name of beauty. His blonde hair glowed like a halo and his blue eyes twinkled an electric blue. He was truly captivating; that is, until Emily asked to show what he really was.
His glamorous smile become a sharp smirk. His teeth became needles as his flawless skindeteriorated and fell away like ash. The electric blue swirled away and became a fiery amber. The blonde halo burned away in flames. The name of beauty went down the drain as it was replaced Alastor, the name of a demon from Greek Mythology. Alastor became a mere shadow in the darkness. You only knew he was there by the eerie feeling that trailed behind him, and the glow of his eyes as they pierced into you.
"Where are you Alastor? Getting colder to what?" Emily yelled. She knew that he was playing a game. He wanted to lead her into his trap.
His low, menacing, chuckle echoed in the dark. "Turn around, come find me!" Emily glared at the nothingness, she refused to fall for his tricks. She continued to march into the cold until a growl was heard. She froze, she knew what was coming. "I warned you, Emily! Turn around!" Alastor's voice rumbled, causing the ground beneath Emily's feet to shake. One of his pets, a flaming, red eyed, wolf came charging at her. She had no choice but to run from it.
In normal dreams, you can't be hurt. You can fall asleep fine, have a nightmare, and wake up fine. But Emily's dreams...nightmares, were all too real. Emily feared the wolves and monsters that Alastor would send. For years, she would spend her time dreaming of running away from the creatures; but the one night she stopped to face the fear, she learned to never do it again.
"You can't hurt me," Emily screamed at the approaching monster. "This is just a dream and I'll just wake up!"
But once the monster raised its claw and swiped down towards Emily, she knew she regretted not running. Emily woke up that morning with scratch marks down her arm, leaving a permanent scar.
She ran in the other direction, away from the burning wolf. "You're getting warmer..." Alastor mused. He was right, the farther she ran the warmer it got. She looked back and realized the wolf wasn't there. She stopped running and stared up ahead. A light, one other than her own, was barely visible from where she stood. She heard the cries of another person, which not only confused her as to how another person was in her nightmare, but it also broke her heart. "Alastor!" She screamed. "Show yourself, you monster!"
Alastor appeared not in his decayed state, but in the beautiful form. "You called, m'lady?" His smirk made her nervous as he stepped towards her.
"Who is that? How are they in my nightmare?" She asked him, pointing at the light.
He shrugged, "How would I know?" She glared at him. He should have known, he was the one who put them there. "Let's go find out!" He said excitedly.
Alastor grabbed Emily by the arm and in a flash they were standing behind a crying man. He was crouched on the ground sobbing into his hands. His blonde hair swayed as his body shook. Emily looked at Alastor.
Alastor's jaw was clenched along with his fists. "Sam." He growled. His eyes sparked with anger.
The man stopped crying and froze. "Alastor..." He whispered. He slowly stood up and turned to face them. Emily gasped as the man with blonde hair and the same electric blue eyes as Alastor stood before them.
Alastor shoved her away as he lurched for his brother, grabbing him by the shirt. "Long time no see, brother."
Emily did a double take. They looked almost the same. "You two are brothers?"
Alastor's body began to shake as he stared into Sam's eyes. Suddenly, his body burst into flames and he vanished.
Sam gaped in shock at his brother's disappearance. Wolves howled, causing Emiy to latch onto Sam's arm. "Run!"
