CHAPTER ONE
Anna's POV Anna woke up to the loud blare of her alarm clock, jolting so hard she rolled right off the bed and landed on the floor with a thud. “Ow…” she groaned, rubbing her side. “Great start, Anna. Real graceful.” She scrambled to her feet, heart pounding. Today’s the interview! After weeks of aimless applications and zero responses, she had finally gotten a chance—an interview as a personal assistant at one of the biggest companies in the city. As she hurriedly got dressed, she muttered a quiet prayer. “Please don’t mess this up, Anna. Just today, try not to be… you.” Her clumsiness was practically part of her DNA, and she prayed it wouldn’t ruin everything. After double-checking her outfit in the mirror and giving herself a shaky nod, she dashed out the door. The moment she reached the massive glass building of Blake Enterprises, she was already running late. She sprinted across the pavement like a madwoman—heels clicking wildly, hair flying—until her foot slipped on the smooth marble floor at the entrance. She braced for impact but instead found herself caught by a strong pair of arms. Her eyes shot open. The man holding her was… stunning. Tall, sharp-jawed, and so handsome it almost made her forget how to breathe. “I—uh—I’m so sorry!” she stammered, quickly stepping back. “Thank you so much!” Before he could say a word, her eyes flicked to the wall clock. Her heart nearly stopped. “I’m late!” she squeaked, and without another glance, she spun on her heels and fled toward the elevators. Panicked, Anna reached the right floor, burst through the door into the office—only to miss a step and crash down onto her butt. Silence. Mortified, she slowly looked up… and froze. Sitting behind the desk was him—the man who caught her. Only now, he wasn’t just a handsome stranger. He was Kane Blake, the CEO himself. Young, powerful, and even more intimidating up close. He didn’t blink. Didn’t move. He just stared at her with a cold, unreadable expression. “You’re late,” he said flatly. Anna wanted the floor to open up and swallow her whole. i slowly stood up, brushing imaginary dust off my skirt as I tried to calm my racing heart. “I’m so sorry for being late,” I said, my voice trembling slightly. The man—no, the CEO—just stared at me coldly for a moment before motioning for me to sit. His eyes were unreadable, sharp, and honestly, a little scary. “What did you study?” he asked, voice clipped. I swallowed hard. “Business Administration,” I replied. “And why should I employ you?” I took a deep breath and answered as confidently as I could, telling him about my dedication, how I was a fast learner, and how much I needed the job. He asked a few more questions, but I noticed something strange—he never looked away from me, like he was trying to figure me out. After a pause, he leaned back in his chair. “You’re hired.” Wait—what? I blinked, stunned, before excitement hit me all at once. “Really? Thank you so much, sir!” I jumped up without thinking—and immediately slipped, falling right back onto my butt. Again. His expression didn’t change, but something flickered in his eyes, like amusement… or maybe pity? “You start tomorrow at 8:30,” he said coldly. “Don’t let me get here before you. And get out.” I scrambled up and quickly nodded. “Yes, sir!” As I walked out of his office, my face burning, I muttered under my breath, “Arrogant jerk…” But I couldn’t stop the small smile tugging at my lips. I got the job. --- Kane’s POV I sat in my office, waiting. Me. Kane Blake. Waiting. Something I never do. The girl who was supposed to be here for an interview was already late, and I was ready to tell her she had lost the job before she even stepped in. But then—bam—someone burst into my office, tripped, and landed on her butt right in front of me. I was stunned. And then I realized… she was the girl I was supposed to interview. “You’re late,” I said flatly, ready to dismiss her. But when she stood up, I caught a proper look at her face. She was beautiful. Even with her plain clothes and frazzled look, she had something—something I couldn’t ignore. And I forgot what I was about to say. Instead of telling her to leave, I went ahead with the interview. I asked for her name, what she studied, and why I should give her the job. She answered honestly, no fake flattery. What shocked me most was that she didn’t try to flirt with me like most women did. She wasn’t trying to impress me. She was just… being herself. So I gave her the job. She was so happy she jumped up—then immediately fell on her butt again. Seriously, how does she do that? Like, is that a skill? Still, I kept my face unreadable. “You start tomorrow. 8:30 sharp. Don’t let me get here before you,” I said coldly. “Now leave.” She ran out like her life depended on it. I shook my head. That girl is trouble. --- Kane’s POV After the interview was over, I had plenty of work to finish and places to be. I returned to my office, still mulling over the events of that morning. As I was reviewing some documents, my phone rang. I glanced at the caller ID—Clara Blake, my mother. Of course, she never missed an opportunity to call. I answered with a sigh. “Hello?” I said, trying to sound patient. “Darling, have you thought about settling down yet? You’re always so busy with work. When are you going to get married?” her voice carried a mix of concern and exasperation. I leaned back in my chair. “Mom, you know I have no time for that. I don’t even get along with the opposite s*x—they’re all after money. I only have one-night stands at best,” I replied bluntly, my tone as cool as ever. She laughed softly. “That’s because you’re the king of the business world, aren’t you? You built the Blake Empire from nothing. But still, you can’t keep avoiding relationships forever!” I rubbed my temple. “Look, Mom, I’m a workaholic. My reputation, my image—I can’t let any distraction come between me and my goals.” I paused, then added, “Besides, I barely make an appearance in public. I don’t have time for anyone.” She sighed on the other end. “Just promise me you’ll try, even a little. Who knows? One day, you might meet someone who changes your mind.” I closed my eyes briefly. “I’ll think about it, Mom. Now, if you’ll excuse me—I have work to do.” I ended the call, returning my focus to the endless stack of documents and emails on my screen, all the while still thinking about the girl from this morning. She was a mistake, I told myself, yet I couldn’t quite forget her clumsy entrance and unexpected charm. --- Anna’s POV After the interview, I couldn’t shake a mix of exhilaration and anxiety. Still low on cash and eager to make the best impression, I headed to a small boutique on the corner to buy a new outfit for the resume update tomorrow. With my few remaining bucks, I picked out a modest but neat dress and a pair of flats. It wasn’t much, but it was all I had, and I hoped it would make me look a little more professional. Once I’d made my purchase, I rushed home to prepare for tomorrow. The evening passed in a blur—quick tidying up, a bite to eat, and a hurried review of my resume—until the day crept in before I knew it. The next morning, the alarm rang, and, true to form, I fell out of bed with an embarrassing thud. Groaning, I remembered the importance of today’s interview; I had to get everything right. I scrambled into the bathroom to freshen up. After a quick shower and applying a dab of lip balm—since I wasn’t one for heavy makeup—I managed to get dressed in my new outfit. My heart pounded as I checked my watch: it was 8:20. I had a few minutes before the interview, so I grabbed my bag and raced out the door in a mad dash for a cab. When I arrived at Blake Enterprises, I paused outside the grand lobby and took a breath. The building was magnificent—bigger and more beautiful than I’d noticed yesterday in all my panic.
