Chapter 1: The Last Blood Moon Wolf
The moon was full the night Selene Hart left home.
Its silver light poured over the winding highway as the bus carried her farther from the only life she had ever known. Outside the window, forests stretched endlessly beneath a blanket of mist, their ancient pines swaying gently in the midnight breeze.
Most passengers had fallen asleep hours ago.
Selene couldn't.
She never slept during a full moon.
Her fingers absentmindedly traced the crescent-shaped pendant resting beneath her sweater. It had belonged to every firstborn daughter of the Blood Moon Lineage for nearly a thousand years.
Now it belonged to her.
The last of her kind.
She lowered her gaze to the leather journal resting on her lap. Its pages were filled with handwritten rules her mother had made her memorize before she turned eighteen.
Never reveal your wolf.
Never allow another wolf to discover your scent.
Never fall in love with a human.
She could still hear her mother's voice.
"The first rule keeps you alive."
"The second protects our bloodline."
"The third protects everyone else."
Selene slowly closed the journal.
She understood every rule.
Especially the last one.
Unlike ordinary wolves, the women of the Blood Moon Lineage carried an ancient covenant within their blood.
If one of them conceived a child with a human man, the covenant awakened.
The father would begin changing.
His body.
His instincts.
His soul.
There was no cure.
No ritual to reverse it.
Once the covenant claimed him, he belonged to the moon forever.
Selene had promised herself that no innocent man would ever suffer that fate because of her.
It was a promise she intended to keep.
By sunrise, the bus rolled into Ravenhurst.
The city was larger than Selene had imagined.
Glass skyscrapers reflected the morning sun while historic brick buildings lined streets crowded with cafés, bookstores, and boutiques. Students hurried toward campuses carrying coffee cups and backpacks, too busy to notice another newcomer stepping onto the pavement.
Exactly how Selene liked it.
Invisible.
She adjusted the strap of her backpack and inhaled deeply.
The city smelled different.
Rain.
Fresh bread.
Car exhaust.
And...
Something else.
Something wild.
Her wolf stirred beneath her skin.
She immediately pushed the feeling away.
"Ignore it."
"You're imagining things."
She had spent years convincing herself that she was alone.
She wasn't about to let one unfamiliar scent make her question everything.
Westbridge University overlooked the eastern side of the city.
Its ivy-covered stone buildings stood proudly around a central courtyard where an enormous clock tower chimed the beginning of a new semester.
Students laughed as they reunited with friends.
Parents carried boxes into residence halls.
Campus volunteers handed out maps.
For everyone else...
Today marked a beginning.
For Selene...
It was another chance to disappear.
She collected her student identification card before making her way toward the residence building.
No one stared.
No one whispered.
No one pointed.
Relief settled quietly inside her.
Maybe this place would be different.
Maybe no one would notice the girl who healed too quickly.
Or the girl whose eyes sometimes turned gold beneath the full moon.
By midday, Selene stood outside the Faculty of Law building.
She had worked too hard to earn her place here.
Changing universities had nearly cost her everything.
Fortunately, her grades spoke louder than rumors.
Inside, students crowded around the internship notice board.
Selene waited patiently until the crowd thinned before stepping forward.
Her eyes searched the list.
Then stopped.
Selene Hart
Intern Placement: Cross & Whitmore Attorneys
She blinked.
Cross & Whitmore.
One of the most respected law firms in Ravenhurst.
Very few students earned placements there.
"You must be Selene."
She turned.
A woman in her late forties approached with a welcoming smile.
"I'm Professor Eleanor Morris."
"It's nice to meet you."
"I've heard wonderful things about your academic work."
"Thank you."
Professor Morris handed her a folder.
"Your internship begins tomorrow morning."
"So soon?"
"The senior partner personally requested that our top intern start early."
Selene frowned slightly.
"The senior partner?"
"Damien Cross."
The name meant nothing to her.
Professor Morris smiled.
"Don't let his reputation intimidate you."
"He expects excellence, but he's one of the finest legal minds you'll ever meet."
Selene simply nodded.
She had no idea that the name she'd just heard would one day change the course of her life forever.
Nor did she realize that somewhere beyond the city...
Hidden deep within Silverpine Forest...
A lone silver wolf lifted its head toward the afternoon breeze.
Its sharp nose caught a familiar scent.
A scent thought to have vanished decades ago.
The Blood Moon heir had arrived.
The following morning arrived far too quickly.
Selene stood in front of the mirror in her small residence room, smoothing the wrinkles from her cream blouse before slipping on a charcoal blazer.
She looked... ordinary.
Long chestnut hair.
Hazel eyes that revealed nothing of the wolf hidden beneath them.
She preferred it that way.
Her phone buzzed.
Mom
"Good luck on your first day. Remember our rules. Call me tonight."
Selene smiled faintly before typing a reply.
"I will. Don't worry about me."
A few seconds later, another message arrived.
"I always will."
Selene slipped the phone into her handbag.
Her mother had every reason to worry.
For twenty-two years, they had lived like fugitives, moving from one town to another whenever questions became too dangerous.
This time had to be different.
It had to.
Cross & Whitmore Attorneys occupied the top floors of Sterling Tower, one of the tallest buildings in Ravenhurst.
The reception area overlooked nearly the entire city through floor-to-ceiling windows.
Selene couldn't help staring.
"You'll get used to the view."
She turned to find a young woman with auburn hair smiling at her.
"I'm Olivia Bennett."
She extended her hand.
"One of the junior associates."
"Selene Hart."
"The famous intern."
Selene frowned.
"Famous?"
Olivia laughed.
"Professor Morris has been bragging about you for weeks."
Selene felt her cheeks warm.
"I hope I can live up to the expectations."
"I'm sure you will."
Olivia handed her a visitor's badge.
"Come on. I'll show you around before the partners arrive."
The law firm buzzed with quiet efficiency.
Lawyers hurried between offices carrying thick files.
Paralegals answered ringing phones.
The smell of fresh coffee drifted from the staff lounge.
Everything moved with remarkable precision.
"It feels... intense," Selene admitted.
Olivia chuckled.
"That's because it is."
They stopped outside a large corner office.
Frosted glass bore a single name.
Damien Cross Senior Partner
Olivia lowered her voice.
"He's already here."
"It's only eight."
"He usually arrives before everyone else."
"Does he ever go home?"
"Barely."
Selene smiled politely.
"He sounds dedicated."
"He is."
Olivia hesitated.
"Demanding, too."
Before Selene could reply, the office door opened.
Damien stepped into the hallway, a leather briefcase in one hand and a stack of case files in the other.
He was taller than she remembered from the photograph.
Dark hair.
Sharp blue eyes.
An expensive navy suit.
He carried himself with quiet confidence.
Not arrogance.
Discipline.
His gaze settled on Selene.
"You must be Ms. Hart."
She straightened instinctively.
"Good morning, Mr. Cross."
He offered a courteous smile.
"Welcome to Cross & Whitmore."
Their hands met briefly.
A strange warmth spread through Selene's palm.
It lasted only a heartbeat before disappearing.
She discreetly withdrew her hand.
Her pendant felt warm beneath her blouse.
Not hot.
Just...
Aware.
Damien didn't seem to notice.
"I've reviewed your academic record."
"I hope it meets your expectations."
"It exceeds them."
Olivia looked between them.
"I'll leave you two to it."
She hurried away.
Damien gestured toward the conference room.
"Walk with me."
The conference room overlooked the river winding through Ravenhurst.
Damien placed a thick file on the polished oak table.
"I don't believe in making interns fetch coffee."
Selene looked up, surprised.
"I believe they should learn."
She nodded.
"So let's begin."
He slid the file toward her.
"A contract dispute."
Selene opened it.
Pages of witness statements, financial reports and correspondence filled the folder.
She read quietly.
Minutes passed.
Damien watched without interrupting.
Finally, Selene looked up.
"The client isn't telling the whole truth."
His eyebrow lifted slightly.
"What makes you say that?"
"The timeline doesn't match the bank records."
She pointed to several documents.
"This invoice was created three days after the goods were supposedly delivered."
She turned another page.
"And this signature..."
She frowned.
"It isn't forged."
"No?"
"It belongs to his assistant."
Damien folded his arms.
"Go on."
"The assistant signed with permission."
"So why deny it?"
"Insurance."
His expression remained unreadable.
"They're trying to recover money they aren't entitled to."
Silence filled the room.
Then Damien smiled.
Not a polite smile.
A genuinely impressed one.
"Very good."
Selene relaxed slightly.
"You saw something everyone else missed."
"I like puzzles."
"So do I."
For a brief moment, neither of them spoke.
Then Damien closed the file.
"You'll fit in well here."
Selene smiled politely, though compliments had never come easily to her.
"Thank you."
Damien leaned against the edge of the conference table, studying her for a brief moment.
"You don't seem surprised."
"About what?"
"Most students become excited when they're praised. You look as though you're waiting for criticism instead."
His observation caught her off guard.
"I've learned not to celebrate too soon."
"Experience?"
She nodded.
"I've transferred universities before."
He didn't press for details.
"That couldn't have been easy."
"It wasn't."
For a moment, silence settled between them.
Damien broke it first.
"One thing you'll learn here is that mistakes happen. What matters is how you recover from them."
Selene met his eyes.
She wondered if he believed his own words.
Everyone made mistakes.
Some cost careers.
Others...
Changed lives forever.
She quickly pushed the unsettling thought aside and gathered the case file, reminding herself why she had come to Ravenhurst in the first place—to finish her degree, keep her secret, and leave without anyone remembering her name.
By lunchtime, Selene had met most of the staff.
Everyone was welcoming.
Everyone except one woman.
She appeared just as Selene stepped into the staff kitchen.
Elegant.
Perfectly tailored white suit.
Diamond wedding ring.
Dark hair pinned neatly into a bun.
The woman paused when she saw Selene.
"You must be the new intern."
"Yes."
"I'm Selene."
The woman smiled politely, though it never reached her eyes.
"Victoria Cross."
Selene froze.
Cross.
Her gaze instinctively dropped to the diamond ring.
Victoria noticed.
"I'm Damien's wife."
A strange feeling settled in Selene's stomach.
She quickly forced a smile.
"It's nice to meet you."
Victoria nodded.
"I was just bringing my husband lunch."
She lifted a neatly packed basket.
"He gets so busy that he forgets to eat."
Selene watched as Victoria walked toward Damien's office.
Something about the interaction lingered in her mind.
Not because of jealousy.
Because of guilt.
She didn't know why.
She had only met the man an hour earlier.
Yet as she watched Victoria disappear behind the office door...
The pendant beneath her blouse grew warm once again.
Selene placed a hand over it.
"What are you trying to tell me?"
The pendant offered no answer.
Far beyond the city limits...
Hidden within the ancient pines of Silverpine Forest...
The silver wolf opened its glowing eyes.
The wind carried a scent that hadn't existed for decades.
Human.
Wolf.
And fate.
The beast rose to its feet.
The Blood Moon heir had taken her first step toward destiny.
Whether she wanted it...
Or not.
