Chapter 1 Betrayal
Victoria's POV:
The hospital room was eerily quiet.
Lying in the bed was my mother, Sophia.
Her face was thin, and her golden hair, once so vibrant, was neatly brushed, making her look almost peaceful, like she was just taking a nap.
But she'd been in a coma for three years now.
"Mom, it's just me today. Ryan's working late at the office," I began.
"Tomorrow's our three-year anniversary, and we're planning a getaway to South Africa to celebrate. He's been so kind to me... We even got a puppy..."
I went on and on, filling the silence with every little detail of my life, as though if I just said enough, maybe—just maybe—it'd somehow wake her up from her deep sleep.
"I miss you so much."
I gently caressed her face, fighting back the tears.
She didn't respond, of course, so I just stayed there, quietly watching her.
A knock at the door broke the stillness.
"Come in," I called, glancing up.
A young nurse entered, her voice soft, as if she were afraid to disturb the woman lying in the bed.
"Ms. Carter, your card has insufficient funds. Would you like to use a different one for payment?"
"Insufficient funds?" I raised an eyebrow.
The nurse seemed as surprised as I was. After all, Carter International Cruise Company was one of the top companies in this city, and I was the only heir to the Carter fortune.
But that card was Ryan's. He'd insisted on paying for my mom's medical bills when she fell ill. His gesture touched me, but I knew his salary could never cover it. So, I transferred money every month into the account to help with his extra costs.
I'd been putting in way more than what her bills required, so seeing a low balance didn't make sense.
I handed her a new card and, once she left, opened my banking app. A long list of transactions filled the screen: diamond rings, couture dresses, all kinds of luxury items—and even several hotel charges.
Clearly, those gifts weren't for me. And I definitely never booked any hotels in Pattaya with him.
It hit me like a ton of bricks.
Who was the woman?
My chest tightened, and tears blurred my vision as I struggled to breathe.
I dialed Ryan's number, my fingers shaking, but the call rang and rang, finally going to voicemail.
Half an hour later, I found myself standing outside his office.
*****
It was 9:30 PM, and the office was completely empty.
Except for Ryan, who was in the middle of passionately kissing some woman in his office.
Their clothes were scattered all over the floor, and I could already guess what kind of "meeting" they were having.
"Oh my god, this is insane."
The woman's body was hidden behind Ryan, but I could see her brown hair.
She was sitting on his desk, nibbling on his Adam's apple. "Honey, did you ever do this with your wife here?"
Ryan quickly undid her underwear and yanked down his pants, clearly in a hurry to get inside her.
"Baby, don't be silly. You know I love you. I only married her to run the company. She's so boring, and there's no way she'd agree to do this here. And even if she did, she could never turn me on."
Ryan promised, "I won't make you wait much longer. Her mom's been in a coma for three years, and she's a housewife. So, the company will soon be mine. I'll divorce her the moment it's all settled."
He continued, "We'll get married, have kids, and live happily ever after."
"Then no more condoms. I want to carry your baby," the woman said.
She laughed, her legs wrapped around Ryan's waist as she moved with him.
When I had just graduated, Ryan said he didn't want to tire me, so he persuaded me to stay at home and leave all the work to him. I believed him and gave up my dreams, becoming his full-time wife. I even argued with my mother when I made this decision.
Ryan's brown eyes were full of tenderness and obsession as he looked at her—eyes I had never seen him use on me in the seven years we'd been together.
When we first got married, it was all because Ryan wanted a job at Carter International.
Ryan thrust a few more times before collapsing onto the couch, with the woman straddling him, both of them lost in the moment.
I stood frozen by the door, and then, finally, I saw her face.
It was Lily Morgan. The student I'd been sponsoring.
I remembered meeting her six years ago at the orphanage when she was just twelve.
Out of all the kids, Lily had been the quiet one, always curled up in the corner with a doll.
I felt sorry for her, so when my mom asked me to choose a child to sponsor, I picked her.
I'd been paying for her education and living expenses for six years, and every Christmas, I'd take her into my home to celebrate.
Just three days ago, she sent me her college acceptance letter, and I promised I'd keep supporting her until graduation.
I treated her like family, and now, here she was, having s*x with my husband on my company's desk.
Her diamond ring sparkled in the low light. No doubt, Ryan had used my card to buy it for her.
This f*****g man! And this f*****g b***h!
My stomach churned, and I bent over, gagging, but nothing came out.
Finally, I gathered myself enough to pull out my phone and record everything.
I needed proof. I was going to sue him and divorce him.
Once I was sure I had enough footage, I wiped away the tears and took a deep breath. I walked straight into the office.
Lily was lying on Ryan's chest, playing with the diamond ring on her finger.
"Honey, I really love the ring, but the only thing that would make it perfect is a matching diamond necklace."
Lily's face went white when she saw me. She quickly rolled off Ryan, trying to cover her face and avoid my gaze.
"Victoria?! What are you doing here?"
Ryan shot up from the couch, using his jacket to cover his body, which was now wet with disgusting liquid. Then, he tried to grab my hand.
I pulled away from him coldly, walking over to Lily. Without hesitation, I ripped the diamond ring off her finger.
Lily screamed, her finger getting scratched by the setting.
"What are you doing?!"
Ryan rushed in front of Lily, covering her with his coat as he glared at me, his face twisted with anger.
"Victoria! Are you out of your mind? Why do you keep attacking her?"
I stared at Ryan like I was seeing him for the first time.
Without warning, I slapped him across the face.
"How dare you, Ryan? You and she have been using my money to betray me! How have I hurt her? By sponsoring her through college?"
Ryan seemed completely shocked. He hadn't expected me to hit him, and his expression quickly turned hostile as he advanced on me.
"I cheated, okay? But so what? What are you going to do about it? Victoria, your mom's dying. Who's going to help you now?"
I didn't flinch. His words cut deep, but I stayed calm.
"Ryan, I have all the evidence. I'm taking you to court, and I'm getting that divorce."
Ryan's face went pale. He lunged toward my phone, trying to grab it from me.
"You recorded a video?!"
I dodged his hand, smirking.
"I'm not as dumb as you two. The video's already uploaded to the cloud."
I turned to Lily, who was desperately trying to hide from me.
"Listen, b***h, every cent you've stolen from me will be sent to you in a legal document. Pay it back immediately, or I'll sue you."
"Baby, listen... it was my mistake. I'm sorry. It wasn't meant to happen this way."
Ryan's attitude shifted almost instantly. Once again, he became the perfectly polite gentleman. He flashed me an apologetic smile, raising his hands up.
"These gifts were for her out of pity, you know that. I'll help her pay you back, and I swear I'll never see her again. Please, Victoria, this was a mistake. Forgive me."
His smile was as charming as ever, his brown eyes full of "sincerity." I had once fallen for them, but now, they didn't affect me anymore.
"You want to pay her back? Fine, but start by paying me back. Tomorrow morning, I'm holding a shareholder meeting to kick your ass. You're fired, Ryan!"
I looked at him coldly.
