shattered heart
CHAPTER 1
It’s been two years of unending love, suffering, and patience. The day has finally come, the day I’ve anticipated for so long, as my joy knew no bounds.
I just couldn’t wait to present the best gift ever to the love of my life after our wedding tonight. Though a feeling of guilt hung onto me as I stood in front of the altar, but then… after all, we were getting married.
“Hey, Sasha. I can’t believe you’ll be getting married before me.” I could remember Jane’s words to me last night while she was making arrangements as my maid of honor. A smile of victory rested on my lips as I stood a few meters from Jonas, the love of my life. He never stopped staring at me; I could see tears in his eyes, which made me realize he must have felt the impact of today’s celebration more than I did.
Soon, the priest began… that very moment that would officially make me the sole owner of my man’s heart. The “I do” part.
“Mr. Jonas Grey, do you take Miss Sasha Foster to be your lawful wife, to have and to hold?”
Now this was the second time the priest would be asking the question. A question I’d say yes to even before any thought.
But then, Jonas was silent, with his eyes still fixed on me. A low murmur began among the crowd as I suddenly thought of my mom. I didn’t want to accept the fact that she might be right all along. Probably, Jonas didn’t hear what the priest had said.
“Babe?” I called softly, hoping he’d come back to himself.
But then, the moment he opened his mouth to speak, every happiness, anticipation, and expectation ceased. My heart shattered into a million pieces.
“I’m sorry, Sasha. There should have never been a wedding.” Jonas’ words were raw, sharp like a knife slicing through my heart. My eyeballs widened while embarrassment never failed to play its role. But then, I still didn’t realize everything that was happening.
Jonas would never leave me on the alter.
“I’m sorry, Father,” he paused, staring at the priest and back at my face, which was red from embarrassment and shock.
“I’m sorry, Sasha, but I don’t love you,” he voiced out, not holding any words back.
“Jonas, is this a joke? Come on, don’t you dare embarrass me… could you please stop this?” I said in between my teeth as I began to realize that this was reality. But then, to think Jonas would say he didn’t love me was something I’d never accept. There was no way he’d have pretended for two good years. There had been a conspiracy, and I knew this had everything to do with Mrs. Antonia Grey, Jonas’ stepmother.
“He who wishes to hang around someone else’s property would bear the cross of embarrassment and shame,” that familiar voice suddenly cut through the tense moment in the crowd as I turned in the direction. Thinking of the devil, stood Mrs. Grey, always as fierce as a lion as she gave me a condescending look.
“I don’t know why you poor ones never listen. It’s been three months he told you to let him go… what made you think he’d choose you in the end?” Mrs. Grey’s words hurt like crazy as my eyes began to feel sore from the tears I had managed to stop from falling.
I stood there like a fool, expecting someone to speak up, fight for me. But then, I didn’t blame my mom for never making it to my wedding… I thought Jonas’ love would be enough for me, but I was wrong. He was just like the rest of his family.
“This is where our relationship ends, Miss Sasha Foster. I’d love you to come get your belongings as soon as you can,” Jonas said without a single line of tears on his cheek nor a moment of regret in his voice.
Where was the man who vowed to protect me until his last breath? Where was the man who gave me everything he had, including his body? Where was the man who fought battles for me?
“Jonas, no… you said you loved me. You said you’d do anything to make me your wife.” I wept shamelessly. Of what use is my worth if I can’t even have the man that I love with it?
Jonas didn’t say a word; he didn’t glance at me as he adjusted his tie. I looked around the crowd and saw smiles as well as pain on the faces of the people who had come.
“Jonas!” I screamed at the top of my voice as I watched his retreating back. His stepmother gave me a final irritating glare before leaving with the rest of the people who had come.
Still fixing my gaze on Jonas and trying to get over the embarrassment I’d received today was Maureen Robertson, the advisor’s daughter. The only woman whom Mrs. Grey would ever want for her son, as she gave Jonas a one-sided hug.
My tears, pain, and broken-heartedness began to shift to jealousy, anger and rage. I could feel fire in my heart as I narrowed my gaze, still fixed on the man who had made a mockery of me in front of the crowd.
Right now, I wanted nothing but to make them feel twice as much pain as I felt.
…………………..
Few moments later
“Hey, Sasha, we should go home.” Jane said in the coolest voice I’d ever heard. Right now, no one was present in the church; it was just us both. But then, I didn’t think I had the boldness to face the world after such humiliation.
“Hey, it’ll definitely pass… I promise you. You’re not the first one to experience this.”
Her voice was cool and calm, trying to soothe my broken heart. But then, this was just a punishment from heaven. How dare I dream of what should never be done?
“I mean… I was such a fool not to have realized that Jonas had stopped loving me for a while now.”
“Never. Didn’t you tell me about how he went through hell to search for the people who had kidnapped you? How he rescued and saved you from—”
“Like a fool, I kept remembering those things he had done without thinking of how he had distanced himself months ago except he wanted to have s*x. Like a fool, I clung onto the beautiful moments we shared without realizing he had changed a long time ago.”
My voice broke as I closed my eyes tightly. The wedding gown, which once shone like crystals in front of me, suddenly became a heavy, burdened dress.
“Let’s take you home. You’d feel better after a night’s sleep. Your mother was right; you should have never fallen for the Greys.” I watched Jane intently with saddened face as I wished it was that easy.
Even if I made up my mind to move on… what am I to do about the most beautiful gift I had for Jonas tonight. Having the gift means remembering Jonas.
“Hey, you stood by me when Larry left me. Because of you, I could move on with my life like nothing happened. Why can’t you do the same for me? I know you love him and—”
“I’m pregnant, Jane. I’m six weeks gone,” I said without fear as I closed my eyes in regret. This was just a punishment from the heavens. How dare a pregnant woman dream of a perfect wedding like this?
It took a while before Jane could speak after she had opened her mouth in shock.
“Wait… you’re pregnant? For that jerk?” Jane’s voice was cruel and louder this time.
I exhaled a dry chuckle.
“Don’t worry. I’m not planning to raise a child on my own… I’ll terminate it first thing tomorrow.” My words were dry, emotionless as I managed to stand from where I’d been sitting. Jane was silent; she didn’t speak a word, and I knew she must have been so shocked just like how it ought to be.
I began to take a few steps, not caring where I was going… just trying to leave everything behind, when her words stopped me in my tracks.
“There’s no way you’d terminate that innocent child. I’ll help you get back at Jonas, but before then… there’s something we need to do.”
I began to wonder what that might be. Jane had always had solutions to every problem. But then, I suddenly found myself thinking of everything my mom had said to me.
'Stay away from the Greys. You don’t wanna know anything about them.'
But then, I was curious. What exactly was there to know about the Greys?
Suddenly, the ringing of my phone almost sent me crazy as Jane stretched it toward me.
“I can't receive any calls. It's probably the people who want to mock me,” I said dryly, not paying attention, as my mind was fixed on a thousand things.
It rang again, and this time, a notification sound popped up.
“Sasha… you need to see this. It might be urgent.”
Somehow, I began to wish it was Jonas—probably he’d try to call to say everything was a prank. My heartbeat became uneven, thumping against my ribs as I suddenly picked up my phone and clicked on the message.
I developed cold feet immediately. A cold shiver crept up my spine, tightening around my chest. My fingers trembled. In that instant, I realized I wasn’t safe. Even in my private moment… I still wasn’t safe.
The phone slipped from my hand and shattered against the floor with a sharp crack.
“Hey, Sasha… what’s the message about?” Jane asked, her eyes bulging and her mouth wide open, as if she already sensed the danger crawling between us. She picked up the phone and placed it on my hand which kept shaking for eternity.
