Chapter 17 - Lovers Quarrel

1669 Words
Izzy Aiden, Lian, Cole, Sofia, Harlee, Jay, Mia, Damian, and myself were the only ones left at the Raven Sanitarium. I took a brief moment to close my eyes and let out a sigh before placing a box in the back of one of the two SUVs that we were finishing packing up. I'd be damned if I left behind bookwork that was centuries old for someone to finger bang in our absence. What exactly has the world become? People so full of hatred and jealously, living just to relish in someone else's misery and defeat, thriving off of drama and negativity. I never would have thought a day would come when Mia and I would have to evacuate the coven because of humans, yet here we are, quickly packing what little belongings we could and running away just to hide what we are from the general public in an effort to protect not only ourselves, but the humans we were running from. Over the years, our kind has faced many obstacles. When you age slowly, drink blood, and are hard to kill, it doesn't matter how often you change your looks, your name, where you live .... you're bound to find yourself on someone's radar, and now that time has come for us. Vampires have been feared, worshiped, hated, experimented on, and killed. But now their desire for public and social media attention is what's a threat. "Are you positive that no one else has been left inside?" I asked anyone who was listening as I picked up another box. Damian walked over and left a chaste kiss on the top of my head as he placed a comforting hand on my lower back, "Yes babe, we're it, everyone else is on their way to Layla's." I glanced up at our home once more, and rolled my eyes as I watched Mia make sure every deadbolt was latched and the steel bar and metal screen security door was secured, "Laramie, do you seriously think all of that is necessary?" An irritated expression formed on my twin sister's face as she made her way towards me, "We're already running away because of them, I'm not going to make things any easier for those fu.ckers." I couldn't help but chuckle as I shook my head, "Alright, let's get on the road ..." Damian's body language suddenly stiffened, "Do you guys hear that?" Jay shook his head, "My hearing isn't nearly as good as ....." Damian interrupted Jay as he quickly tossed the last of the bags in the back of the SUV, "Hurry up! We need to leave! NOW!" "What's wrong?!?" Lian asked as Aiden grabbed her hand and dragged her over to the other SUV, flung open the passenger door, and almost shoved her inside. Clearly, he heard whatever it was that Damian had, and it wasn't good. "They're almost here!" Damian and Ace growled out at the same time as Damian quickly got into the driver's seat of the SUV that Lian and Aiden were in, while Cole gently helped Harlee in the passenger seat of the second SUV before climbing into the driver's seat. "Fu.cking Val obviously didn't give us as much notice as she led me to believe!" Sophia spat out as she opened the door behind her brother. I quickly ran over to Damian and crawled through the driver's window just enough to place a deep kiss on his lips, "You get these guys out of here, I'm going to hold them up as long as I can." "ISABELLA" Damian yelled my name in a threatening tone, but he knew my mind was already made up. "Just go, Damian! Mia and I will stay to help. We can get a big enough storm going to slow them down and give you guys some coverage," Jay said as he and Mia walked up next to me. Instead of getting into the backseat of the SUV, Sophia slammed the door shut and ran towards us as fast as she could while in heels, "Do you guys actually think you can keep Allen away?! I don't think so. You're going to need me ...." "Sophia! Get your ass in this vehicle!" Cole yelled as he stood on the running board, his eyes throwing daggers at his sister. I looked between the two angry male drivers and pointed a finger at both of them, "You two, leave, NOW! We don't have time for your bullshit!" Mia, Jay, and I shifted into our birds as Sophia evanescenced back inside the castle. Damian gave me one last look as he put the SUV in gear and sped down the driveway with Cole following closely behind. Jay's large, black thunderbird took flight with a crack of thunder echoing around us from the beat of his powerful wings. Soon after, Izzy and I took to the sky to join him. Mia's white with black impundulu stood out against the dark and angry clouds that formed around us, as the wind gradually increased. My black with white bird asked for rain, and immediately the skies obliged, pouring down drops so large they almost hurt when they beat against us. The three of us circled around, slowly increasing our diameter and the areas that our storm touched. We watched as unexpecting tractor trailer drivers pulled off of the side of the highway to wait out the weather, not wanting to risk being blown over while driving. Other drivers who seemed insecure about their abilities quickly did the same, and it didn't take long before the only people driving on the roads were those who desperately needed to get wherever they were going. Mia, Jay, and myself took turns keeping an eye on the two SUVs as they made their way towards the highway. I was able to let out a breath of relief when I saw them turn on the onramp, but our job wasn't over yet, as a group of 3 vans that were clearly from the news station followed a bright red Porsche 911 turbo cabriolet off of the highway and towards Raven Sanitarium. It was obvious that it was Allen Anderson. No one else would be cocky and arrogant enough to drive that car in this weather, plus, you know, the news vans and all. "Mia, hail!" I linked my sister, thankful to Rhi for giving us the ability to do so years ago. As if the rain wasn't bad enough, marble-sized balls of ice started beating against us, but the son off a bi.tch kept driving even as the hail dented the side of his beautiful car. Mia made the hail even larger, and for a moment I thought that it had worked when Allen's windshield cracked, and I saw his breaklights flash .... but the bastard kept driving. We watched as their vehicles crawled up the driveway, stopping in front of the castle that we called home. As soon as their doors flung open, the camera crew hurried out to grab their equipment, already dressed in rain gear, while Allen made his way to the locked security door, yelling something I couldn't quite make out. I cursed not being able to hear him thanks to the storm as well as being in bird form, but I could see everything like it was crystal clear. I wanted to just end his life. Nothing would give me greater pleasure, but it wasn't my place to do so. I had to keep repeating to myself that he was human ..... just a human. Sophia flung open the front door, and her and Allen immediately started yelling at each other, hand gestures being thrown between them. Rain, hail, sleet, wind, and thunder increased, trying to get them all to take cover and leave, but the camera crew were devoted to their jobs. It was either else that, or maybe they were just terrified of being fired, as they all stood out in the weather to record the entire event as it played out. Something was said to make Sophia shut up, and my heart started racing as I watched her unlock the security door, walk through it, and slowly make her way towards Allen as the door slowly swung shut behind her. "What's she doing?!" Mia cried out in my mind, wondering the exact same thing that I was. My racing heart sank as the three of us watched Sophia lock lips with Allen in one of the most passionate kisses I had ever seen. But as Sophia and Allen were kissing, Allen pulled a juniper stake from his waistband, lifting it above the center of Sophia's back. A high-pitched streak left Mia's impundulu as Sophia's eyes locked onto my own. "Mia, don't!" I yelled out over link, hoping my sister would listen to me for once. Sophia held onto Allen tightly and threw herself against the screened security door, piercing not only herself with the stake, but Allen as well. As Allen's lifeless body collapsed with the stake sticking out of the center of his chest, Sophia's ashes spread across the threshold of the doorway, setting of the castle's built-in security system and causing automatic metal gates to slide shut across the windows and doors. Jay and I hurried to stop Mia from doing something stupid, our storm immediately coming to an end and the sun shining down on us as we got in front of her. The camera crew hurried to their vans and sped away as an older man exited from the passenger side of the Porsche and ran to Allen's body. "Is that ..." Jay started to ask over link. "Mr Harris .... we need to get out of here," I instructed as I pushed my wings as hard and fast as I could to retreat. "But, Izzy ...." "Not now, Mia! Our time will come!" I knew what my sister was thinking, what she was feeling, but this wasn't the time for Mia's deadly emotional ways ..... Not yet.
