Dylan’s POV
Normally I don’t care for girls at all. They are to me, only there for a good time. I don’t have time for relationships like most of them want. I’m in training to take over as the head of our family business.
Not everyone knows about what our family business really is about, but nonetheless, everyone has a great amount of respect for our family and especially for my father. I want to achieve that same amount of respect and that results in a lot of training from everything involving business to everything involving a gun.
But watching as Ally left with her father yesterday, gave me an uneasy feeling inside that I couldn’t shake. She was different.
At first, I simply showed interest in her thinking I would be able to have my way with her later on, but things changed the second I saw her reaction to me calling her cute.
She was innocent. She was shy.
She was inexperienced and it was not in my place to take that away from her. She had guts as well, that’s for sure and she somehow made me feel normal for just a while.
But the moment my mother mentioned her father, she got nervous. She almost seemed scared. It was confirmed when I rushed after her and she looked from me to her father almost begging me with her eyes to pretend we hadn’t already met.
If he bought it, I’m not sure of and the look he had in his eyes when he dragged her through the doors gave me a feeling, I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I mentally slapped myself for even bothering to think about it, but I just couldn’t let it go.
Something wasn’t right.
“Hey, dad?”
“Yes, son?”
“What business did you discuss with Mr. Kent yesterday?” I asked trying to act normal.
“We discussed the missing weapons in the last few shipments. You would have known that if you didn’t just run off,” he huffed looking at me annoyed. “Why do you ask?”
“And what did you end up getting to?”
“Just that we would put more security at the harbor, again why do you ask and don’t make me ask again,” he said as he leaned back on his desk crossing his arms.
“I just don’t trust him very much,” I said with a shrug.
“I don’t either,” he said catching me off guard.
“Then why involve him further?” I asked
“We came up with a plan together to stop our weapons from being stolen. It’s quite a lot of money that we lose every time,” he said as he got behind the desk. “But the plan we came up with isn’t the only plan that will take action,” he folded his hands in front of his face and looked at me.
“What was the first thing I taught you about these sorts of things son?”
“To catch the culprit a double-cross must be made,” I said with a grin. “You still got it, old man,” I said as I sat down.
“Of cause I do and I’m not that old,” he laughed.
“You are getting there dear,” my mother said as she entered the office. “I hope I’m not disturbing.”
“You’re not,” both my father and I said.
“Sometimes you two are too much alike,” she laughed. “I just wanted to hear what went on with Ally yesterday.”
“Ally? Jack’s daughter?” My father raised his brow.
“Yes, I caught the two of them together in the garden. Apparently, our son ditched the charity ball to be with her,” she said eyeing me knowingly.
“No, I went to the garden to get a little peace and quiet and she happened to be there. You know I don’t like these events,” I said as a matter of fact.
“So, you don’t like her?” My mother almost sounded disappointed.
“You know I’m not into those sorts of things,” I said scratching the back of my head.
“Could have fooled me,” she huffed.
“But to get back on track, when is the next shipment?” I needed to get out of this conversation.
“Tomorrow and you and Brody will be overseeing it from above,” my dad said as he handed me a piece of paper. “The information is all there and I expect a full report back.”
“Sure, I will let Brody know and we will prepare,” I said as I excused myself and left. So, my dad doesn’t trust him either. It didn’t settle the uneasy feeling like I’d hoped it would.
The next day at the harbor
“Is everything set up? They are starting to unload.” I looked at Brody.
“Yes, everything is ready.”
“Good.”
We watched them unload everything into the warehouse. When they were done and everyone left, we kept an eye on the only entrance that wasn’t guarded.
“It’s been two hours, and nothing has happened,” Brody said.
“Patience, we have to make sure before we do anything.”
Brody didn’t have a chance to answer as a truck drove up to the entrance without the headlights on.
“Now we are getting somewhere,” Brody said excitedly. “Isn’t that Mr. Kent?” He asked looking at me.
“It is,” I sighed. “But who is that next to him?”
“I can’t see it from here, should we get closer?”
“No, we will stick to the plan,” I said as I took pictures.
My dad will not be pleased about this. Loyalty is the most important thing to him.
“Come on, we are done here,” I said.
We grabbed our gear and jumped in the car.
“So, it was him all along,” my dad said as he looked through the pictures.
“Yes, there is no doubt about that, but we couldn’t make out the other person.”
“That is okay,” he said as he got up. “You know what you have to do,” he sighed. “I had hoped I was wrong.”
“I will get to it now,” I said as I turned towards Brody. “Gather the men, we are going out for a home visit.”
