The wind had picked up from blowing as a pleasant breeze, uncharacteristic for the summer months, to gusting seventy-five miles an hour. The rain was pelting down, stinging like biting insects when it contacted the skin. People in Daytona Beach were seeking cover or hiding in their homes, bracing for the hurricane’s onslaught. Some had probably left the coast in an attempt to avoid the storm, while others had decided to tough it out. However, the prediction now was that the city would receive a glancing blow from Hurricane Ethel. Mandatory evacuation was not in affect.
