Chapter 8 — The Alpha’s Envoy

726 Words
They didn’t make it far. Kade had barely led them out of the deepest part of Eclipsewood when the wind shifted — sharp, cold, carrying the scent of wolf and pine. His entire body went rigid. Willow felt it instantly. His wolf surfacing. His breathing changed. His heartbeat quickened. Lucian noticed too. “Someone’s coming.” Kade’s jaw tightened. “Not someone. My pack.” Willow’s pulse increased. “Already?” Kade scanned the forest. “They must’ve been close when your surge hit.” Lucian’s voice was low. “Or they were already searching.” Willow looked at Kade. “Is that… bad?” Kade hesitated — just long enough to make her stomach twist. “Depends on who they sent.” A branch snapped in the distance. Then another. Then a low, resonant howl rolled through the forest, vibrating the ground. It wasn’t threatening. It wasn’t welcoming. It was… assessing. Lucian stepped slightly in front of Willow, shadows embracing her protectively. “They’re announcing themselves.” Kade growled. “They’re announcing their dominance.” Willow’s breath trembled. “Why?” Kade turned to her, his expression softening. “Because they can smell your magic.” Lucian added, “And they want to know if you’re a threat.” Willow’s heartbeat quickened. “I’m not.” Lucian’s gaze held hers. “Power doesn’t care about intention.” Another howl — closer this time. Kade stepped forward, shoulders squared, Alpha energy rolling off him in waves. “Stay behind me.” Lucian moved beside Willow, shadows rising like a shield. “And stay close.” Willow did both. The forest parted. Three wolves emerged — massive, silver‑furred, eyes glowing like molten gold. They shifted as they approached, bones cracking, fur dissolving into their skin until three men stood in their place, bare‑chested, marked with lunar sigils. The one in front stepped forward. Tall. Broad‑shouldered. Scar across his jaw. Eyes sharp and intelligent. “Kade,” he said, voice deep. “You vanished.” Kade didn’t flinch. “I had a reason.” The wolf’s gaze slid to Willow — slow, assessing, curious, dangerous. “We felt her.” Lucian’s shadows tightened. Kade stepped between Willow and his pack. “She’s under my protection.” The other wolves raised a brow. “Is she? Or is she the reason the moonstone caverns cracked?” Willow’s breath caught. “They cracked?” The envoy’s eyes sharpened. “Your surge hit every lunar site in our territory.” Lucian exhaled softly. “Impressive.” Kade shot him a look. “Not helping.” The envoy returned their gaze to Willow. “Who are you?” Willow opened her mouth — but Kade answered first. “She’s mine.” Lucian stiffened. Willow froze. The envoy’s eyes widened. Then narrowed. “Kade,” one of the wolves said slowly, “you don’t claim witches.” Kade’s wolf surged. “I do now.” Lucian stepped forward, voice cold. “She is not yours. She is under our protection.” The envoy’s gaze moved between them — wolf, vampire, witch — and something like realization dawned. “Oh,” one of the wolves murmured. “The Triune.” Willow’s stomach dropped. “The what?” Lucian's expression hardened. “Not here.” The envoy’s expression shifted — curiosity turning into something sharper. “The Alpha Council will want to see her.” Kade growled. “No.” The envoy didn’t blink. “You don’t get to decide that.” One of the wolves yelled. Lucian stepped forward, shadows rising defensively. “Neither do they.” The envoy’s eyes flashed gold. “The territories are already moving. The Sanctum is searching. The Court is stirring. And the Hollow born—” Willow flinched. The envoy noticed. “They’re whispering,” the wolf said quietly. “We heard them.” Kade’s wolf snarled. “Enough.” He yelled, in his alpha tone. The envoy held up their hands and bowed to their alpha. “We're not here to fight. We're here to warn you.” Lucian’s voice was like ice. “Warn us of what?” The envoy looked directly at Willow. “The world felt you wake the Veil.” Willow’s breath quivered. The envoy continued, voice low and certain. “And now everyone is coming.”
