The cold lingered like a bruise on the air, clinging to the bark of trees and the edges of Willow’s skin. Even after the Hollow borns' whisper faded, after her magic settled into a still quiet, the forest felt wrong.
Kade paced in a slow circle around her, wolf still close to the surface. His eyes glowed faintly, gold flickering like embers. Lucian stood still, but the shadows around him shifted restlessly, reacting to the lingering disturbance.
Willow hugged her arms around herself. “They’re not gone.”
Lucian’s voice was low. “No. They’re waiting.”
Kade stopped pacing. “And they’re not the only ones.”
Willow looked up. “What do you mean?”
Kade exhaled, jaw tight. “My pack felt your surge.”
Lucian added, “And my court felt the Veil tremble.”
Willow’s stomach dropped. “Both of them?”
Kade nodded. “The Moonfang wolves are sensitive to lunar magic. When you surged, it hit them like a shock wave.”
Lucian’s expression was unreadable. “The Sanguine Court has wards tied to the Veil. They flared. Violently.”
Willow swallowed hard. “So they know something happened.”
Lucian’s gaze sharpened. “They know you happened.”
Kade growled softly. “They don’t know it was her.”
Lucian didn’t look away from Willow. “They will.”
Willow’s pulse quickened. “What are they going to do?”
Kade ran a hand through his hair, frustration simmering. “The pack will come looking for me. They’ll want answers.”
Lucian’s voice was colder. “The Court will want control.”
Willow’s breath caught. “Control of what?”
Lucian stepped closer, shadows pooling near his feet. “Of you.”
Kade’s wolf surged, a low growl rumbled in his chest. “Over my dead body.”
Lucian’s eyes flashed silver. “Over mine as well.”
Willow stared at them, heart pounding. “Why would they want me?”
Lucian’s voice softened, but the truth in it was sharp. “Because you are the Catalyst. And power like yours has not existed in centuries.”
Kade added, “And because the Hollow born are waking. Everyone will want to decide what you do next.”
Willow’s throat tightened. “I don’t even know what I’m supposed to do next.”
Lucian’s gaze held hers. “You learn.”
Kade nodded. “You train.”
Lucian continued, “You understand your magic.”
Kade finished, “And you stay alive.”
Willow exhaled shakily. “That’s… a lot.”
Lucian’s voice gentled. “You don’t have to do it alone.”
Kade stepped closer, “We’re with you.”
Willow looked between them — two forces bound to her by magic she barely understood.
Her voice was small. “What if I’m not enough?”
Lucian’s expression softened, rare and fragile. “You already pushed back the Hollow born twice.”
Kade’s voice was fierce. “You’re more than enough.”
Willow’s chest tightened, a mix of fear and something warmer. “What happens now?”
Lucian turned toward the forest’s edge. “Now? The territories move.”
Kade nodded grimly. “My pack will come. His court will come. And the Sanctum won’t stay quiet.”
Willow’s pulse stumbled. “All because of me?”
Lucian looked back at her. “No. Because of the Veil.”
Kade added, “And because the Hollow born want you.”
Willow shivered.
Lucian’s voice dropped, quiet and certain. “We need to get you somewhere safe before the first envoy arrives.”
Kade’s wolf growled. “My territory is closest.”
Lucian’s eyes narrowed. “And the Court is better defended.”
Willow stepped between them before the tension could escalate. “Stop. Please.”
They both froze.
Willow took a deep breath. “I don’t care where we go. I just… don’t want to be alone.”
Kade’s expression softened instantly. Lucian’s shadows stilled.
Lucian lifted his head. “Then we stay together.”
Kade nodded. “All three of us.”
Willow exhaled, relief washing over her.
But the forest didn’t relax.
The coldness deepened. The shadows thickened. The moonlight wavered.
Far behind the veil, they were whispering her name.
