The cold didn’t fade.
After Willow pushed back against the whisper, after the Veil stilled, Eclipsewood remained frozen in a way that felt wrong.
Kade stayed close, his wolf still right beneath the surface. Lucian stood on her other side, shadows bending toward him like loyal creatures. Willow’s magic trembled beneath her ribs, restless and unsettled.
She felt watched.
Not by the forest. Not by the moon. Not by the men beside her.
By something deeper.
Something behind the Veil.
Willow swallowed hard. “They’re still there.”
Lucian’s voice was quiet. “They never left.”
Kade’s jaw tightened. “But they’re not getting through.”
Lucian didn’t look away from the trees. “Not yet.”
A shiver crawled up Willow’s spine.
The Hollow born had always been a story — a whispered warning in the Umbra Sanctum, a myth meant to keep young witches from wandering too close to the Veil. But now she could feel them. Not physically, but emotionally. Like cold fingers brushing the edges of her thoughts.
“Why can I feel them?” Willow whispered.
Lucian turned to her, silver eyes sharp. “Because they can feel you.”
Kade stepped closer, his heat grounding her. “Willow… your surge woke the Veil. That’s why they’re reacting.”
Lucian nodded. “They’ve waited centuries for the Catalyst. They know what you are.”
Willow pressed a hand to her chest. “I don’t even know what I am.”
Lucian’s voice softened. “You’re the one who can open the Veil.”
Kade’s voice followed, warm and fierce. “Or the one who can keep it closed.”
Willow’s breath trembled. “I don’t want either.”
Lucian’s expression shifted — something like sympathy, quickly buried. “The Veil doesn’t care what you want.”
A sudden ripple of cold swept through Eclipsewood.
Willow gasped.
Kade grabbed her arm, Lucian grabbed the other.
The Veil trembled.
A whisper rising from the darkness — not the Veil this time, but the Hollow born behind it.
Catalyst…
Willow’s knees weakened.
The whisper came again, curling around her like frost.
Catalyst… heart of shadow… pulse of the moon…
Kade snarled, his wolf at the surface. “Back off!”
Lucian’s eyes flashed silver. “They’re not speaking to us.”
Willow gasped. “They’re speaking to me.”
Lucian nodded. “They know your magic.”
Willow felt it — a cold pull at her body, a hunger threading through her thoughts, a pressure against her chest.
Catalyst… open…
Her magic snapped.
Shadows burst from her skin. Moonlight flared beneath her ribs. The forest shook.
Kade held her upright, his heat anchoring her. Lucian steadied her, shadows absorbing the excess magic.
The whisper vanished.
The cold retreated.
The Veil stilled.
Willow collapsed. Body trembling.
Kade dropped beside her, hands gentle on her shoulders. “Willow. Willow, breathe.”
Lucian knelt on her other side, voice soft. “You pushed them back again.”
Willow’s breath shook. “I didn’t mean to.”
Lucian’s gaze held hers. “You didn’t open the Veil.”
Kade’s voice was warm. “You defended it.”
Willow looked between them — moonlight and shadow, warmth and cold, instinct and discipline — two forces bound to her, two destinies tied to her, two hearts reacting to her magic.
Her voice was barely a whisper. “They’re coming for me.”
Lucian nodded once. “Yes.”
Kade’s jaw clenched. “Then we’ll be ready.”
Willow's breathing stilled for a moment, her magic trembling under her skin.
The Hollow born had felt her.
They were coming for her!
