Chapter One — Opening Scene
Lila Hart had exactly twelve dollars and forty cents in her bank account when she walked into the gleaming tower of Vale Industries on Monday morning. She checked her phone as the elevator climbed toward the thirty-second floor. Past due. Final notice. The hospital bill notification sat at the top of her screen like a threat. Her mother’s treatment was overdue. Her younger brother’s school fees were unpaid, and the paycheck she had worked eighty hours for was already spent before it arrived. Lila inhaled slowly and slid the phone into her bag. “Smile,” she whispered to herself. It was the rule she lived by, no matter how hard life became, she will always smile. The elevator doors opened into the executive floor, silent, polished, intimidating. Employees moved briskly, heels tapping across marble floors, voices low, and shoulders tense. No one relaxed on this floor, because Adrian Vale was here. The billionaire CEO of Vale Industries was many things according to rumour. Brilliant. Merciless. Untouchable. At thirty-two, Adrian had transformed his father’s company into an international empire worth billions. He was the youngest billionaire in the city, and the coldest man Lila had ever seen. She had worked in the executive offices for eleven months and had never once seen him smile. Not when profits soared. Not when awards came in. Not even when investors praised him. He was a machine in an expensive suit. “Lila!” She turned as her supervisor hurried toward her. “Mr. Vale moved the investor briefing to nine. The presentation files need to be in the conference room in five minutes.” Lila nodded instantly. “I’ll handle it.” She rushed toward the archive room, gathered the presentation folders, balanced her laptop, coffee tray, and files in both arms, then hurried back. She was halfway down the corridor when it happened. A sharp turn, a loose rug, one misstep. The coffee tray tilted, the folders scattered and Lila crashed straight into Adrian Vale. Hot coffee splashed across his shirt and the impact sent him sideways. His injured leg twisted violently against the marble floor. A sickening sound echoed in the corridor and Adrian fell. For one horrifying second, no one moved, and then chaos erupted. “Mr. Vale!” “Call medical!” “Oh my God” Lila dropped to her knees, shaking, “I’m so sorry sir, I’m so sorry” Adrian’s face had gone white with pain. His jaw tightened and his cold grey eyes locked on hers, and in them she saw fury. Not loud fury. The dangerous kind. The kind that destroyed people quietly. “I” she whispered. He said nothing, but the hatred in his stare told her everything. She was finished. Her job was gone, maybe worse. She sat frozen as the medical team lifted him onto a stretcher. Just before they wheeled him away, Adrian spoke. “Bring her to me when I return.” The words were calm, but they terrified her more than shouting ever could, because Lila knew one thing, when Adrian Vale wanted something, he got it, and whatever waited for her when he came back would change her life forever.
