When I stepped into the hallway, I saw her right away. She was standing by the window, looking out at the morning light, her hands clasped behind her back. She turned as soon as she heard my footsteps, a gentle smile crossing her face.
“Ready?” she asked, her voice soft but knowing.
I nodded, though a part of me hesitated. “Yeah. It’s time.”
Jayla stepped forward, placing a hand on my shoulder. Her touch was firm, reassuring. “You’ve made it this far. Whatever comes next, I know you’ll handle it.”
I gave her a small, grateful smile, appreciating her calm in a way I didn’t always understand. “Thanks, Jayla. I don’t think I could’ve made it through all of this without you.”
