“Ruby, wait!”
The words tore out of me before I could stop them. I didn’t plan to say them—my voice just broke free, like instinct, like something deeper than thought had clawed its way out.
Elysia’s arm was still looped around mine, her warmth grounding me, but in that moment, it felt suffocating. I untangled myself gently. Her fingers slipped from my sleeve, her confusion written in her wide, moonlit eyes.
“Alaric?” she whispered, voice trembling.
I forced a smile that didn’t reach my chest. “I’ll explain later,” I said softly. “I just... need to do this.”
