The Door

Chapter Two: The Door The door swung open. Maya spun around, her heart slamming in her chest. But no one came through it. Just cold night air and the sound of the street outside. Adrian: "It's a distraction. Move!" He grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the back hallway. Behind them, the masked figure hit the floor hard. Something had knocked him down. Or someone. A second flashlight clicked on near the counter. This one wasn't pointed at Maya. It was pointed at the masked man. New Voice: "Get up. We're leaving. Now." The masked man scrambled to his feet and ran for the broken window. Glass crunched under his boots. In seconds, both shapes were gone, swallowed by the dark street outside. Silence dropped over the café like a blanket. Maya's legs gave out. She sat down hard on the hallway floor, her whole body shaking. Maya: "What just happened?" Adrian knelt down next to her. His hands were shaking too, though he tried to hide it. Adrian: "Someone stopped them." Maya: "Who?" Adrian: "I don't know. But it wasn't one of mine." That word — mine — landed strange in Maya's ears. Like Adrian had people. Like he had sides. Like this whole thing was bigger than one scared girl in a café at midnight. Maya: "You keep saying things like that. Like you already know what's going on." Adrian didn't answer right away. He looked at the broken window, then back at her. Adrian: "I know some of it. Not all of it." Maya: "Then tell me the part you know." He was quiet for a long moment. Somewhere outside, a car engine started and drove off fast. Adrian: "Your grandmother knew my family a long time ago. Before I was rich. Before any of this." Maya: "She never told me that." Adrian: "She wasn't supposed to. Not until tonight." Ethan came running in through the front door, breathing hard. He was younger than Maya expected — maybe twenty-five, with messy hair and a jacket thrown on over pajama pants. He looked like he'd left his apartment in two minutes flat. Ethan: "Are you both okay? I got here as fast as I could." Adrian: "We're fine. Whoever it was already left." Ethan looked at the broken glass on the floor, then at Maya, like he was seeing her for the first time. Ethan: "You're Rose's granddaughter." Maya: "You knew my grandma?" Ethan glanced at Adrian, like he was asking permission to answer. Adrian gave a small nod. Ethan: "Everyone who worked for Adrian knew about this café. It was kind of a rule. Nobody talks about Bennett's Brew. Nobody comes here unless Adrian says so." Maya: "Why would a billionaire have a rule about a coffee shop?" Nobody answered that. They moved to the back office, the only room with a working lock. Adrian swept broken glass off the couch with his sleeve and told Maya to sit. She didn't want to sit. She wanted answers. But her legs were still shaking, so she sat anyway. Adrian pulled a chair across from her. Ethan stood by the door, watching the street through the blinds like he expected someone else to show up. Maya: "Start from the beginning. All of it." Adrian rubbed his hands over his face. For a second, he didn't look like a billionaire at all. He looked tired. Young, almost. Adrian: "When I was a kid, my dad wasn't a good man. I used to walk here at night just to get away from him. Your grandmother let me sit in the back booth for hours. She never asked questions. She just gave me coffee and let me breathe." Maya: "That doesn't explain a masked guy trying to grab a key out of my hand." Adrian: "I'm getting there." He looked down at his hands. Adrian: "My father built his company on something he shouldn't have. Records that could ruin a lot of powerful people if they ever got out. Before he died, he hid proof of it. Your grandmother helped him hide it. That's the truth. That's what the key opens." Maya felt the brass key like it was burning a hole through her jacket pocket. Maya: "So people want to kill me over your dad's secrets?" Adrian: "They don't want to kill you. They want the key. If you don't give it to them, that's when it gets dangerous." Ethan turned away from the window fast. Ethan: "Adrian. Car outside. Same one from before." Adrian stood up so fast the chair scraped the floor. Adrian: "Lock the door behind us." Maya: "Us? I'm not going anywhere with you." Adrian looked at her, and for the first time, his voice wasn't calm at all. Adrian: "Maya, listen to me. If you stay here, you're dead by morning. I need you to trust me right now, even if you don't understand why." Maya: "My grandma's letter said not to trust everyone around you." Adrian: "It also said to trust me." Outside, a car door slammed shut. Footsteps again. Closer this time. Ethan: "Guys. We need to go. Right now." Maya looked at the brass key in her hand, then at Adrian's open palm, waiting for her to make a choice she never asked to make. Then the office door handle started to turn — slowly, from the outside — even though Maya was sure she had locked it herself just minutes ago.
