Alice went to therapy, attempting to control her bereavement hallucinations, and understand them better. Dr. Hiliary Paw saw her three times a week during the first four months following the funerals. She fed uppers to Alice, but only temporarily, for fear that her patient would attempt suicide. Alice called the prescription her goodies because they helped to keep her mind off the deaths of her loved ones. Dr. Paw was helpful, and Alice called her, “…more of a friend to me than a doctor.” Unfortunately, at sixty-six, Dr. Paw closed her practice, fully retired, and moved to Maui. Alice chose not to seek out a new head doctor; her words, not mine. Instead, she joined different clubs to push her grief away: scrapbooking, knitting, gardening, and writing poetry.
