The air inside the armored transport instantly turned chaotic as high-frequency pulses shattered the reinforced windshield into a blinding spiderweb of sparkling glass shards. Shouts rang out from the security detail outside as Dante’s men scrambled into tactical positions behind the vehicle doors, weapons drawn and ready.
Dante didn’t flinch. In a fraction of a second, his arm shot out, pulling Elena down flat against the leather seat beneath him. His heavy frame shielded her completely, his broad shoulders and hard chest absorbing the immediate panic of the assault. The scent of ozone, gunsmoke, and expensive cologne wrapped around her like a protective cage.
Elena
(Her heart hammering wildly against his ribs, her hands pressing flat against his chest as she looks up into his shadowed face)
They knew we were coming. This wasn't a random sweep—they were waiting for us!
Dante Vance
(His voice a low, gravelly rumble right against her ear, completely devoid of fear)
Let them watch. They wanted to draw me out of the penthouse. Now they have to face what they called down upon themselves.
Outside, the heavy thud of boots hitting the concrete echoed through the terminal. Lorenzo’s voice cut sharp and urgent through the comms channel linked to the cabin dashboard.
Lorenzo
(Through the static-heavy comms)
Boss! Sector four enforcers are compromised! We’ve got hostile units approaching from the loading docks with high-yield suppression gear!
Dante Vance
(Without breaking eye contact with Elena, his hand sliding down to unholster his sidearm with terrifying, fluid precision)
Hold the line, Lorenzo. Not a single step back.
He shifted his weight, keeping Elena securely pinned beneath his arm as he kicked open the remaining side door of the transport. The harsh neon lights of the terminal poured into the vehicle, illuminating the cold, ruthless determination carved into his features. He glanced down at Elena one last time before stepping out into the line of fire.
Dante Vance
Stay down, Elena. If you move an inch, I’ll spend the rest of my life hunting you down myself.
Before she could form a reply, Dante vaulted out of the vehicle into the crossfire, leaving her alone in the shadows of the backseat as the war for his empire officially began.
