THAT WAS CLOSE!

Chapter 08. THAT WAS CLOSE! Kara's POV. I glanced at Sophie, and then turned to face my dad who raised a brow as if trying to ask if there was a reason why I wasn't saying anything. For one, I knew that look in his eyes. Whenever he got suspicious of something, especially one that he had no idea of and perceived as some sort of threat, he wouldn't let it be unless he had gotten to the root of the matter. I sighed, and dropped my head as I bit my bottom lip. I was going to tell them to keep their voice down because I knew that he was in the kitchen which wasn't far from the sitting room. How did it slip off my mind? “Kara?” there was an edge to his voice as called my name. “I, uh,” I rubbed the back of my neck and stared at Sophie as if whatever I was going to say was written on her face. “You haven't said anything yet.” he said. “Instead, you've been quiet for over five minutes now. What are you not telling me?” His voice became hard. “It is nothing, dad.” I said, shaking my head. “It is nothing serious.” “Really?” he scoffed. “You want me to believe that it's nothing? Come on, Kara. I can tell when there's something wrong, and I know that there's something wrong. So tell me what it is.” “She doesn't want to miss school.” Sophie said after the room went silent for a few seconds. “She feels like you wouldn't allow her attend lectures because of what happened.” “Yes, we told her to talk to you about it.” Sarah said, shrugging a shoulder. “But I guess she's scared because she feels like you won't approve of it.” “Is that so?” he asked, turning to face me. “Yes,” I said, lowering my head to evade his gaze. “I just didn't know how to tell you myself.” “Come on, sweetheart.” he settled on the armrest of the couch, and wrapped a hand around my shoulder. “I was going to bring it up after dinner because I know how much you love going to school and attending lectures.” “I know I need sometime to get over this.” I lifted my face to him. “But I feel like if I stay at home for a few days, I'll grow weaker, and miss her more.” “I know, but you can't just attend lectures as if nothing happened.” he said, shaking his head. “You think staying away from school for a few days will make you weaker, but I think you need that time to pull yourself together.” “Dad…” “You can't learn if you aren't emotionally stable, sweetheart.” he said, stroking my hair while looking into my eyes. “I know what it feels like when you've to study with something like this going on inside of you. It messes with your mind. You'll be unable to learn.” “But I feel like I can.” my voice shook slightly with tears as I said those words. “Staying at home would only remind me of her, which would make me cry.” “I get it. She's your mother, and you've lived with her all your life.” he said. “This house,” He sighed as he swept his eyes all over the place. “This house holds memories of the both of you worth years.” he added as he returned his gaze to me. “You don't expect that you would be able to get rid of them in a few days. In fact, you aren't supposed to get rid of them at all.” “I didn't say that I would get rid of the memories I made with her.” I said. “They are the only thing that reminds me that there was a time she was here. I'll take those memories with me everywhere I go.” “Of course, you should.” he said with a brief smile. “But then, I still don't think you're ready to return to school yet; you need some time to get pull yourself together.” “What is that smell?” I sniffed, and coughed as the scent of a burnt cheese hit my nose. “Damn it!” he got up from the armrest of the couch, and dashed into the kitchen. “That was close.” I clutched my chest with a hand and heaved a sigh of relief. Don't get me wrong. It's not like I didn't want to tell him, or I don't plan to do so. However, I just didn't know how best to say the words to him. How do I explain that an ex-student suddenly returns, or better still l, crawls out from whatever hole he's been hiding in in the past few months, and then my life turns upside down? To me, it just doesn't make any sense. No matter how much I try to make out something from what happened, it just feels like I'm hitting a dead end. Telling him would only complicate things the more. Nathaniel had mentioned that he returned to prove to everyone that he wasn't cursed. If I tell my dad about what happened, he would definitely ask the school authorities to send him out of the school. Should that happen, then Nathaniel doesn't get to prove that he isn't cursed. But keeping quiet would mean buying myself a ticket for the next terrible thing that would eventually happen. It's not like I care about him trying to prove to anyone that he is cursed or not. I mean, after what happened to my mother, I don't need anyone to tell me that he's cursed. But then, from the way he spoke, a part of me wants to believe that he isn't cursed. However, if I choose to believe that, then how do I explain what happened to my mother? How would he explain what happened to his previous mate? Those questions have been running through my mind and it seems like my head is about to fall apart from over thinking. If anything, I just want him gone for good. “We will take our leave now.” Sophie said, nudging Sarah in the arm discreetly. I noticed, but didn't say a word. “Yes, we will.” Sarah said. “We have to be on our way now; it's late already.” “Thanks for coming.” I got up from the couch, while they'd already done so. “I will see you out.” “No, you don't need to.” Sophie said. “Just try to get some sleep.” “No, I'm fine.” I said, forcing a smile. “I will just walk you both down the street, and return home.” “Alright then.” Sophie replied. I walked with them to the door. “Are you leaving already?” my dad asked as I opened the door for them. “Why don't you stay for dinner?” Sophie and I looked at each other for a second. “I would have loved to, sir.” she replied. “But it's late already. Besides, we have lectures to attend very early tomorrow.” “If that's the case, then I can't ask you to wait.” he said. “Get home safely. Uh, Kara, don't stay out too long.” “I won't.” I said, nodding my head. “I will just walk then down the road, and return home.” That said, Sophie, and Sarah walked out through the door, and I followed behind them. “Thank you.” I turned to Sophie with a smile as we walked on the sidewalk. “For?” she raised a brow. “If it wasn't for you, I don't know what I would have done back there.” I said, shaking my head. “So, thank you for helping me back there.” “Come on, Kara.” she nudged me in the arm softly. “You are making it seem like I did something big for you, but it's nothing.” “That is what you think.” I said, looking at the ground as we continued to walk. “But I know my dad. He wouldn't stop asking until I say the truth.” “Well, what are friends for?” Sarah shrugged a shoulder. “If we can't help in times like this, then I don't think we deserve to be called friends.” “I guess so.” I lifted my face to Sarah with a smile. “You can return home now.” Sophie said as we got to the bus terminal. “We can find our way back home from here.” “I will just wait till the bus arrives.” I said. “I can do that much, can't I?” “Well, the bus is here already.” Sophie said as a bus stopped in front of the terminal. “You should go back home now. Good night.” The door opened, and they got into the bus. I watched as they walked, and sat close to the window. “Good night.” I mouthed, and waved back at Sophie. The gas hissed as the bus began to move away from the terminal. I sighed, and turned around to return home. But then, I froze as I heard my name from behind. “Kara.”
