Chapter 07.
A SECRET.
Kara's POV.
“Damn it.” I dropped my head, and sighed while my right hand remained on the wall.
I just knew it. From the way my dad sounded earlier when he asked if I could step out of my room for a minute, I knew that there was something going on. Something which he knew that if he told me about, I wouldn't be happy about it.
Staring at the video doorbell monitor, I found Sophie and Sarah standing outside. That was exactly what I was trying to avoid. I didn't want them to come, and that was the more reason why I refused to pick up their calls.
“Did you invite them over?” I asked, turning back to face my dad.
“What? No.” he crinkled his face. “I didn't ask them to come. Do you think I would when I know quite well that this is the very reason why you refused to pick up their calls?”
“Then what are they doing here?” I asked, my voice rising. “What exactly do they want? Is it so difficult for them to see that I don't want to speak to them at this moment? Why do they have to come find me all the way down here?”
“Come on, sweetheart.” he said, in a soft voice. “It is because they care about you.”
“Well, I don't care!” I yelled, my eyes glittering with anger. “They shouldn't have come. I was doing just fine on my own before now. Besides, why did you have to come call me out from my room?”
“Look, I know how you feel sweetheart.” he said, looking at my face. “But I had no idea that they were the ones behind the door.”
He paused, and sighed.
“I heard the doorbell ring, and I went to get it. I would have allowed them in, but because I know how you're feeling right now, I decided to come tell you about it first.” he explained.
“For goodness sake! You could have just asked them to leave.” I replied, trying to keep my voice down. “What am I supposed to do with them? What are they here to tell me if not sorry? Would that bring my mother back?”
“Of course, it won't.” he said, shaking his head as he took a step towards me. “But you know quite well that I can't send them away.”
He looked past me as if they were right behind me. My stomach twisted in a knot. In as much as I was angry, I knew that I shouldn't have said those words. I mean, what if they heard it?
“They came all the way down here because they care.” he said, nodding his head as he spoke the words. “If they didn't, they wouldn't have come. I'm sure they got worried because you weren't answering your phone. What would you have them do?”
“Stay in their home.” I said with ice in my voice. “It is rather obvious that I don't want to speak to anyone now; why can't they just catch a hint of that?”
“I know how you feel, but you're keeping them waiting.” he said as the doorbell rang again. “If you don't want to see them tonight, I can go ahead, and tell them that you don't want to. Perhaps, tomorrow would be a better day for you all to see.”
It didn't seem like he was waiting for me to say the words. If anything, it seemed like he had made up his mind already to ask them to leave because as soon as he said those words he began to walk towards the door.
I sighed, and dropped my head. Each time I try to pull myself together, I find myself falling apart again. I can only imagine how my mom felt when she lost her mother, who happened to be my grandmother.
One moment it feels like you can go back to living your life the way you used to, and then the other moment, reality just strikes you like a bolt of lightning, and you find yourself falling apart again.
“Wait…” I turned back to him with tears in my eyes. “Don't ask them to leave.”
“I should.” he replied. “It is late already. You need to get some rest.”
“No, I'll talk to them.” I said, forcing a smile through my lips. “I mean, they are here already, so why not? They could have been sleeping, but they chose to be here at this time. So, I'll just talk to them.”
“Are you sure you want to talk to them?” he raised a brow.
“Yes, I am.” I replied, nodding my head. “I will be fine; I've got this.”
He glanced at the door, and then looked at me, then he sighed.
“Alright, if you say so.” he said, and returned to the kitchen.
Alone in the sitting room, I wiped my face with the back of my hands, and then went to get the door. I gripped the doorknob, and turned it open.
“Hey,” Sophie said in a soft voice that caused tears to fall from my eyes.
The look in her eyes was the kind that showed that she understood what it meant to lose a mother even though her parents were still very much alive.
“We are so sorry for what happened.” Sarah said. “We heard about it some minutes ago.”
“Yea, and we've been trying to reach you ever since, but you weren't picking up.” Sophie said. “So, we decided to come check up on you.”
“It must be so hard on you right now.” Sarah said, in a consoling voice. “Have you had anything to eat? If you don't mind, we'll fix you something to eat.”
“Uh, my dad is fixing dinner as we speak.” I said, my voice subdued with tears. “Come on in.”
I stepped aside, and allowed them in. As soon as they walked in, I closed the door, and joined them on the couch in the sitting room.
“What happened?” Sophie asked, in a curious tone of voice. “I know that you went after Nathaniel, but you didn't return after that.”
“Yes, I did.” I said, trying to steady my voice as I stared at my palms. “I wanted him to get rid of the mark which he put on my forehead.”
“Did he?” Sarah asked.
“No, he didn't.” I shook my head. “He refused to.”
“Why?” Sophie made a face. “I mean, he put that mark on your forehead without your consent, so why wouldn't he take it off?”
“I don't know.” I said, shrugging a shoulder. “He mentioned something about having to prove to everyone that he isn't cursed. But why do I have to be the one who has to suffer for it?”
“This doesn't make any sense.” Sophie said, shaking her head. “Have you told your dad about it yet?”
“No, I haven't.” I scrubbed my hands over my face, and pushed my fingers through my hair. “I don't know how to tell him.”
“You don't know how to tell me what?”
My heart sank.
“Dad…”
