Chapter One: Beneath the Pale Moon
BLOOD CHIMERA SYSTEM The forest had been f*******n for three hundred years. Not because of the beasts that hunted beneath its trees, nor because of the ancient ruins buried beneath its roots. It was f*******n because vampires and werewolves had once slaughtered one another there. Tonight, Prince Damian Dracul stood in the middle of it anyway. Rain whispered through the leaves. Mist curled around the ancient stones, and above the black canopy hung a pale moon. Damian waited beneath a dead oak, his black coat damp from the cold. His crimson eyes remained fixed on the path. She was late. He had faced assassins without blinking. He had stood before his father's throne while an entire court watched him in silence. Yet waiting for one woman made him restless. "Kasey," he murmured. "Where are you?" A branch snapped. Damian's hand moved instantly to his sword. A figure emerged from the mist. Silver eyes. Dark hair. A cloak pulled tightly around her shoulders. His sword lowered. "Kasey." Princess Kasey Moon hurried toward him. Before she could say a word, Damian crossed the distance between them and pulled her into his arms. She pressed her face against his chest. For several seconds, neither spoke. The daughter of the Werewolf King was holding the heir of the Vampire Kingdom in the middle of enemy territory. If anyone discovered them, there would be blood. Kasey finally whispered, "I thought you weren't coming." "I almost didn't." She pulled back. "Why?" "My father ordered me to attend a royal council." "And you disobeyed him?" Damian's mouth curved into a faint smile. "I've been disobeying him since I met you." Kasey tried not to smile. "You'll get yourself killed." "Probably." "That's not funny." "I know." His expression softened. "I came because you sounded frightened." Her smile disappeared. Damian noticed immediately. "What happened?" Kasey looked away. "Something is wrong." "Tell me." She swallowed. "I've been sick for weeks." Damian's face tightened. "Are you dying?" "No." "Are you cursed?" "No." "Then what is it?" Kasey placed a trembling hand over her stomach. Damian stared at her. Her eyes filled with tears. "I'm carrying your child." The forest seemed to stop breathing. Damian did not move. He simply stared at her hand. "Our child?" Kasey nodded. A strange emotion crossed his face. Shock first. Then wonder. He stepped closer. "You're certain?" "I went to the royal healer secretly." Damian's hand slowly covered hers. For one beautiful moment, the prince forgot that their kingdoms were enemies. He forgot the throne waiting for him. He forgot his father's hatred. He forgot every law that stood between them. A smile appeared. "We're going to have a child." Kasey laughed through her tears. "You aren't angry?" "Angry?" "Your father will never accept this." "Neither will yours." She lowered her eyes. "Damian, this child will carry both bloodlines." He understood. Vampire blood. Werewolf blood. Two ancient races that had spent centuries trying to destroy one another. Their child would be neither fully vampire nor fully werewolf. Something new. Something the kingdoms had never seen. Something their rulers might consider dangerous. Kasey's voice trembled. "What if they call our baby a monster?" Damian gently lifted her chin. "Then I'll remind them that monsters don't have mothers who love them before they've even been born." A tear slipped down her cheek. Damian wiped it away. "I won't let anyone hurt you." "And if they come for you?" "Let them." "Damian..." "I've spent my entire life preparing to inherit a kingdom." He pressed his forehead against hers. "Now I have something worth fighting for." Kasey closed her eyes. He kissed her softly. It was brief, almost painfully gentle. Then a distant howl rolled through the forest. Kasey froze. "Someone is here." Damian turned. Nothing moved. But deep between the trees, a pair of golden eyes vanished. Someone had been watching. --- The Werewolf Palace Three nights later, Kasey stood before the enormous windows of her chamber. Her fingers rested over her stomach. She could still feel Damian's arms around her. His promise echoed in her mind. I won't let anyone hurt you. The chamber doors suddenly opened. Kasey turned. King Aldric entered with six guards. Her father looked at her for several seconds. Then his gaze dropped toward her stomach. Kasey's heart stopped. "Father?" Aldric's voice was quiet. "Who is the father?" She said nothing. His eyes hardened. "I asked you a question." Kasey forced herself to breathe. "Damian." Silence. Then Aldric's expression became terrifyingly still. "Damian Dracul?" "Yes." "The vampire prince?" "Yes." Aldric struck the table with his fist. The sound echoed through the chamber. "How could you?" Kasey's eyes burned. "I love him." "You were born a princess of this kingdom!" "I'm still your daughter." "You carry the blood of our enemy!" "And he is the father of my child!" Aldric stared at her. "You have no idea what you've done." "I know exactly what I've done." Her voice cracked. "I chose the man I love." "You chose a vampire." "I chose Damian." Aldric turned toward the guards. "Seal the palace." Kasey stepped forward. "Father, no." "Princess Kasey is confined to her chambers." "No!" "No visitors. No letters. No messages." Kasey grabbed his sleeve. "Please. Don't take him from me." Aldric pulled away. "You will never see him again." The doors closed. Kasey stood alone. Her home had become a prison. --- The Crimson Palace At the same hour, Damian stood before his father. Overlord Dracula sat upon the throne of the Seventh Kingdom, surrounded by black pillars and burning crimson flames. "You betrayed me." Damian said nothing. "You met the werewolf princess." "Yes." "You knew who she was." "Yes." "And now she carries your child." Damian's eyes narrowed. "Who told you?" Dracula smiled coldly. "You still don't understand how little can remain hidden inside a royal palace." Damian stepped forward. "I love her." Dracula rose. "Love?" "Yes." "Love is a weakness invented by humans." "Then perhaps humans understand something vampires forgot." Dracula's eyes flashed. "You will forget Princess Kasey." "No." "You will never see her again." "No." The throne room fell silent. Dracula raised one hand. "Take him." The Blood Guard attacked. Damian drew his sword. The first soldier fell. Then another. A third was thrown across the chamber. But there were too many. Bloodsteel chains wrapped around Damian's arms. Runes ignited. His strength disappeared. "Father!" Dracula watched coldly. "Perhaps imprisonment will teach you obedience." Damian was dragged away. His final words echoed through the throne room. "You can imprison my body." He looked directly at Dracula. "But you'll never command my heart." --- The Soul Between Them Hours later, Damian sat inside a dark underground cell. Bloodsteel chains bound his wrists. His body ached. His powers were almost completely suppressed. Then he felt it. A warmth inside his chest. Kasey. Their f*******n bond allowed them to sense one another across enormous distances. He closed his eyes. "Kasey?" Her voice came faintly. "Damian." He sat upright. "Are you safe?" "No." His jaw tightened. "What happened?" "My father knows." Silence. Then Kasey whispered the words that nearly broke him. "He wants our child gone." The chains rattled. Damian pulled against them. "He won't touch you." "You're imprisoned." "I'll escape." "How?" "I don't know yet." Kasey gave a broken laugh. "That's not much of a plan." "It's enough." "Damian..." "I'm coming for you." "I love you." His eyes closed. "I love you more than this kingdom." The connection faded. Damian opened his eyes. His fear was gone. Only determination remained. --- The Blood Luna Two nights later, the Blood Luna rose. The entire vampire capital celebrated. Ancient bells rang across the city. Nobles filled the Crimson Palace. Soldiers abandoned their normal posts to attend the ceremonies. It was the perfect night for an escape. On a palace rooftop, Rex Ashford watched the celebration below. Damian's closest friend stood alone in the darkness. He knew what he was about to do could destroy his family. Helping the prince escape was treason. Helping him reach a werewolf princess was madness. Helping him protect a child born from two enemy bloodlines could ignite another war. Rex smiled. "Well, Damian." His body shimmered. "I've done stupider things for you." His form disappeared. The Ashford family's f*******n technique, Perfect Veil, erased his presence. He moved through the palace unseen. Past the guards. Past the magical barriers. Past the royal chambers. Until he reached the prison. Rex placed his hand against the lock. "Let's make history." The seal shattered. Damian looked up. "Rex." "Miss me?" Damian almost laughed. "You shouldn't be here." "Neither should you." Rex pulled an obsidian dagger from his coat and cut through the Bloodsteel restraints. The final chain broke. Power exploded through the chamber. Crimson energy rushed around Damian. His eyes burned brighter. Rex stepped backward. "Good. You're alive." Damian looked at him. "You risked everything." Rex shrugged. "That's what brothers are for." He reached beneath his cloak and produced a small crimson crystal. Damian stared at it. "A teleportation crystal." "One use." "Where does it take me?" Rex's smile disappeared. "To the border." Damian took the crystal. "And after that?" "You'll have to find your princess yourself." Damian closed his fingers around it. For the first time since his imprisonment, hope returned. Then the palace bells suddenly stopped. Rex's expression changed. Someone had discovered the broken seal. A roar echoed through the corridor. "The prison!" Damian looked toward the door. Rex drew his dagger. "Looks like we just ran out of time." Damian smiled. "Then let's run." Far away, inside a locked chamber in the Werewolf Kingdom, Kasey suddenly felt something change. She placed both hands over her stomach. The unborn child moved. Her eyes widened. For one impossible second, a crimson glow appeared beneath her skin. Kasey whispered Damian's name. And somewhere beneath the Blood Luna, the first child born from vampire and werewolf blood opened its eyes. The ancient war had created many monsters. But this child might become something far more dangerous. A bridge between two kingdoms. Or the reason they finally destroyed each other.
