CHAPTER 1- THE GIRL IN THE RAINU
Thick and unrelenting, the rain fell in sheets, soaking the ground and shrouding the forest in a silvery mist. In the distance, a low, menacing thunder rumbled, as though the heavens themselves were alerting any foolish creature that dared to venture outside.
Kael Blackthorne remained unflinching.
His dark cloak was being pulled by the wind as he stood on the rocky ledge overlooking Nightshade Valley, his keen eyes searching the treeline below. Something wasn't right, and his senses were alert. The storm had arrived too quickly. The animals were too silent. Then came that smell.
It's faint but distinct.
WOLF
And not from his pack.
Kael’s jaw clenched. Shadowridge was too dangerous for renegade wolves to enter. Not without a desire to die.
His muscles tensed, ready to move, and he shifted slightly. A low, menacing growl rumbled in his chest. Whoever had ventured into his domain was either extraordinarily courageous or extraordinarily foolish.
He saw her when lightning split the sky, illuminating the valley for a single heartbeat.
A figure, holding something at her side, staggered through the trees. tiny. delicate. human-like.
However, her aroma... It conveyed an alternative narrative.
Kael didn't think. He shifted. In a matter of seconds, his boots were barely touching the ground as he weaved between old pines. The storm roared distantly in his ears as the forest merged around him. He could only think about her, and the weird tug that tightened in his chest as he approached.
Her skin was pale, her clothes were soaked and ripped, and he discovered her slumped against the roots of a fallen tree. She had a deep gash just below her ribs, and her side was stained with blood. She wasn't dead, but she wasn't conscious either.
Her aroma hit him like a kick to the stomach as he knelt next to her.
Mate.
"No," Kael exhaled, stumbling back. "That isn't feasible."
He had long since given up on fate. In the Goddess of the Moon. His mother used to whisper about sacred bonds and destined love in fairy tales. He possessed his strength, his pack, and his secrets. All he needed was that.
The bond, however, was truthful.
Wild with recognition, his wolf roared to the surface. defensive. possessive. enraged by her wounds.
With a growl, Kael leaned closer and brushed damp hair away from her face. Even though she was unconscious and covered in blood, she was stunning. Dark lashes against her cheeks, soft lips, and high cheekbones.
He didn't know who she was. She wasn't a member of his pack. Hell, she didn't come from a nearby region. He would have been aware.
which implied
She was a rebel.
And still—his partner.
Her lips parted as she attempted to speak, stirring beneath his touch. Stormy gray, dazed, haunted, her eyes fluttered open.
She muttered, "Don't let them find me."
Kael furrowed his brows. "Who? “Her eyes rolled back before she could respond, and she fell into him.
Kael muttered a curse. With ease, he lifted her up, sensing the tremor in her body and the quick pulse of pain and fear. She was fleeing from something, or someone, whoever she was. And in order to get away from it, she had entered his territory.
With the storm behind him, he moved quickly through the forest.
His mind was full of questions. Who was she? What had she done? Alpha of Nightshade was bound by the Moon Goddess to a renegade woman who was bleeding out on his doorstep; why?
It was illogical.
Nevertheless, it felt appropriate.
More than anything, that frightened him. When Kael arrived, the only sounds in the infirmary were the steady beep of monitors and the outside hiss of rain. He placed her on the bed and watched as Mari, the pack's healer, started applying skilled care to the wound.
"She's fortunate," Mari whispered. Her lung was inches away from the gash. She might have bled out if she had been outside for an additional hour.
Kael didn't answer. He never took his eyes off the girl.
"You still own her."
"You know this changes everything," Mari said gently after pausing.
Kael remained silent.
The woods were illuminated by another flash of lightning as he turned away and walked to the window.
He felt it then—sharp, electric, wrong.
Like a silent scream, a ripple of power swept through the atmosphere.
Not from the girl.
From the forest. With a growl, Kael's wolf surfaced once more.
Mari gasped behind him, and he turned abruptly.
The young lady had sat up.
Keep your eyes open.
And silver that glows.
Her voice was hollow and distant as she whispered, "I didn't mean to bring it here." "But now... it won't stop until we're all dead."
