Chapter 7: The Coronation Ambush

1963 Words
The Grand Hall of the Blackwood Citadel was packed to capacity, the air thick with tension and the heavy scent of blood-wine. Hundreds of high-ranking wolves watched in silence as Aria stood before the pack elders, dressed not in a traditional white gown, but in her sleek, dark silver battle armor. Alpha Killian stood beside her, his presence dominating the room. He slit his palm with a ceremonial blade, holding it over the golden chalice on the altar. 'With this blood, the Silver Crescent is absorbed, and the War Luna takes her rightful place beside the throne.' Aria took the blade, cutting her own palm without flinching. As their blood mixed in the chalice, the mate bond flared, sending a golden ripple of light through the room. The elders bowed their heads in reluctant submission. 'I present to you, Luna Aria of the Blackwood Pack!' the high priest announced. Before the pack could cheer, the massive oak doors of the Grand Hall were blasted off their hinges. A concussive wave of dark magic threw the guards to the floor. Through the smoke stepped Alpha Vance of the Bloodclaw Pack—Killian’s most ruthless rival, flanked by a dozen heavily armored shadow-warriors. Vance’s eyes were locked dead on Aria, a cruel, mocking smile on his face. 'A beautiful ceremony, Killian,' Vance sneered, his voice dripping with malice. 'Too bad you are marrying a stolen woman.' Killian stepped in front of Aria, his claws sliding out as his Alpha aura flared dangerously. 'You dare interrupt my coronation, Vance? Give me one reason why I shouldn't rip your head off right now.' Vance laughed, pulling an ancient, blood-stained parchment from his cloak and tossing it onto the altar. 'Because according to the High Alliance Treaty signed eighteen years ago by her father, Aria was betrothed to me the moment she turned twenty-five. Her father broke the treaty to hide her from me.' The room erupted into frantic murmurs. A legal betrothal treaty signed before a mate bond was recognized by the werewolf council could trigger an all-out tribal war. Vance pointed his blade directly at Killian. 'The Moon Goddess might have made her your mate, Killian, but the law makes her my property. Hand over the War Luna, or the entire Alliance will tear the Blackwood Pack to pieces.' Aria looked at the document, then at Killian, whose gray eyes were turning a lethal, pitch black. Chapter 8: The Law of Blood 'She is not your property, Vance,' Killian growled, the stone floor beneath his boots cracking under the weight of his Alpha aura. 'The Moon Goddess chose her for me. That supersedes any ink on a dead piece of parchment.' 'The laws of the High Alliance were written to prevent pack wars, Killian,' Vance countered, his shadow-warriors taking a step forward, their weapons gleaming with dark magic. 'The werewolf council will strip you of your Alpha title and execute your pack if you defy a legal blood-betrothal.' The Blackwood elders looked at each other in sheer panic. They were powerful, but fighting the entire Alliance over a captured girl from a defeated pack was a suicide mission. Aria stepped out from behind Killian, her sapphire eyes locked onto the ancient document resting on the golden altar. She scanned the faded cursive, her military training in Alliance politics kicking in. She knew every loophole in the law. 'Let me see that,' Aria demanded, snatching the parchment before Vance could object. 'Read it and weep, little wolf,' Vance mocked. 'Your father signed your life over to me to pay off his territorial debts.' Aria’s eyes narrowed as she reached the bottom clause of the document. A cold smile spread across her face. She looked up, her gaze shifting from Vance to the high priest of the Blackwood Pack. 'High Priest,' Aria called out, her voice echoing with absolute authority. 'What is the exact legal definition of a coronation under Alliance law?' The old priest blinked, caught off guard. 'It... it is the spiritual and physical binding of a wolf to the pack's throne, finalized the moment the blood of both royals mixes in the sacred chalice.' 'And when is that process considered complete?' Aria pressed. 'The moment the mixed blood touches the altar,' the priest replied. Aria turned back to Vance, tossing the parchment back onto the floor. 'Then you are exactly thirty seconds too late, Alpha Vance.' Vance’s smile vanished. 'What are you talking about?' 'Look at the altar,' Aria commanded. Everyone looked. The blood she and Killian had shed had already dripped down the sides of the golden chalice, pooling directly onto the stone altar. The golden ripple of energy from the mate bond had already sealed the spiritual connection. 'According to Clause 4, Section 2 of the Alliance Treaty you hold in your hand,' Aria explained, her voice sharp and unyielding, 'a prior betrothal is automatically voided if the female completes a coronation ritual with a destined mate before the betrothal contract is claimed in person. I am no longer just Aria of the Silver Crescent. I am the crowned Luna of the Blackwood Pack. I belong to this throne.' Killian let out a dark, booming laugh, his gray eyes shining with pride as he looked at his new queen. He stepped beside her, drawing his broadsword. 'You heard her, Vance. The Moon Goddess claimed her, and the law protects her. Now, get out of my Citadel before I use your shadow-warriors to paint these walls red.' Vance’s face contorted with pure, unadulterated rage. He realized he had been outsmarted by the very woman he came to enslave. He gripped his blade, his wolf forcing its way to the surface. 'I don't care about your technicalities. If the law won't give her to me, I'll take her by force!' Vance lunged across the altar, his blade aiming straight for Aria’s throat. Chapter 9: The War Luna's Blade Vance’s blade whistled through the air, aimed squarely at Aria's throat. Killian roared, shifting his weight to intercept the strike, but Aria was already moving. Her battle instincts, forged in years of border wars, took over before her mate could step in. Clang! With blinding speed, Aria drew her twin silver blades, crossing them in a perfect X-block. The impact sent a shockwave through the hall, but her feet stayed planted firmly on the stone floor. Vance gasped, shocked by the sheer raw strength of the woman he had dismissed as mere property. 'I told you, Vance,' Aria hissed, her sapphire eyes glowing with dangerous lunar energy. 'I am a warrior first.' With a powerful twist of her wrists, she redirected Vance’s momentum, sending him stumbling forward. She followed up instantly with a sweeping kick to his knee. Vance snarled as his joint popped, forcing him down to one knee on the blood-stained altar. 'Guards! Kill them all!' Vance screamed, clutching his knee. His a dozen shadow-warriors lunged into action, but the Blackwood warriors were ready. The Grand Hall erupted into an all-out melee. Swords clashed, furniture shattered, and the walls shook with the feral roars of shifting werewolves. Killian moved like a shadow of death beside Aria. His massive broadsword cleaved through two shadow-warriors in a single, brutal arc. Even in the heat of battle, the mate bond hummed between them, allowing them to fight in perfect, lethal synchronization without speaking a word. Killian covered her blind spots; Aria sliced through anyone attempting to flank him. Vance pushed himself up, his eyes wild with desperation. Realizing he was completely outmatched by the combined force of the Heartless Alpha and the War Luna, he reached into his vest. He didn't pull a blade. He pulled a black glass orb. 'If I can't have you, Killian can't either!' Vance roared, slamming the orb onto the floor. BOOM. The orb exploded, releasing a dense, choking cloud of dark purple smoke. Aria instantly recognized the sickly, sweet smell. It was aerosolized liquid wolfsbane, highly concentrated and lethal upon inhalation. The Blackwood wolves began to collapse, coughing up blood as the poison paralyzed their lungs. Killian staggered backward, his gray eyes blowing wide as he choked on the toxic air, his immense Alpha strength failing him against the sheer volume of the gas. Through the purple haze, Vance appeared wearing a filtered leather mask. He grabbed Aria by her hair, yanking her backward into the shadows of a hidden exit behind the altar. Aria fought back, but the peripheral trace of the gas was already making her limbs feel like lead. 'You're coming with me, Luna,' Vance snarled in her ear as the heavy iron door of the secret exit slammed shut behind them, locking Killian and the dying pack inside the poisoned hall. Chapter 10: The Mountain Crash The freezing mountain wind whipped through the open door of Alpha Vance’s armored escape truck, but it wasn't enough to clear the sweet, deadly fog of wolfsbane from Aria's lungs. Her muscles burned. Her twin silver blades were gone, stripped by Vance’s shadow-warriors. 'Drive! Faster!' Vance screamed at his chauffeur, ripping off his leather gas mask as the truck roared away from the Blackwood Citadel, tearing down the icy, cliffside road. Aria lay slumped on the floorboards, her sapphire eyes locked onto Vance. He thought the poison had paralyzed her. He didn't know about her War Luna bloodline immunity. While the wolfsbane was slowing her down, her body was already burning through the toxin, her strength rushing back with every heartbeat. 'You should have killed me in the hall, Vance,' Aria whispered, her voice low and dangerous. Vance snapped his head down, his eyes widening in shock. 'What? You should be unconscious!' Before he could react, Aria launched herself upward. She wrapped her handcuffs—which weren't silver—around Vance's neck from behind, choking him. Vance thrashed, his claws digging into her arms, but she held on with pure, unadulterated rage. 'Loose her! Get her off me!' Vance choked out, kicking the back of the driver's seat. The panicked driver looked back, losing control of the steering wheel. The heavy truck hit a patch of black ice, swerving violently toward the edge of the sheer cliff. Aria caught the movement in her peripheral vision. She let go of Vance, threw her arms over her head, and braced for impact. CRASH. The truck smashed through the guardrail, plunging down the snow-covered ravine. It rolled twice, metal screeching against rock, before slamming upside down into a massive pine tree. Silence descended on the snow-covered mountain, broken only by the ticking of the ruined engine. Aria kicked the shattered passenger door open and crawled out into the deep, freezing snow. Blood dripped from a cut on her forehead, but she was alive. She looked back at the wreckage. The driver was dead, crushed by the steering column. Vance was trapped under the collapsed roof, coughing up blood, his legs pinned. Aria didn't look for a weapon. She didn't need one. She reached into the shattered cabin and dragged Vance out by his collar, tossing his broken body into the snow. 'The treaty is dead, Vance. And so are you,' Aria said, stepping over him. A terrifying, familiar roar echoed from the top of the ravine. Aria looked up. Standing on the edge of the cliff was a massive, midnight-black wolf. Killian. His fur was matted with blood and his eyes were wild with a primal, protective fury. He had survived the gas, tracked her scent through the blizzard, and was now staring down at his mate. But before Killian could leap down, the snow beneath Aria's feet began to rumble. The crash had triggered a massive avalanche from the peak above. A wall of white thunder was rushing down the mountain directly toward her.
