Chapter 3: The Midnight Bargain

849 Words
The dungeon was freezing, but the cold didn't bother Aria. It was the suffocating weight of the mate bond that kept her pacing the damp stone cell. Every beat of her heart echoed with Killian's name. She gripped the iron bars, testing their strength, but they were laced with silver, burning her skin on contact. Heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor. The guards instantly scrambled to attention. Alpha Killian stepped out of the shadows. The flickering torchlight caught the sharp angles of his face, making him look even more predatory. He waved his hand, dismissing the guards until the dungeon was dead silent. 'Enjoying the hospitality?' Killian asked, leaning against the damp wall opposite her cell. 'I've slept in bloodier mud during the border wars,' Aria retorted, her eyes tracking his every movement. 'Are you here to execute me, or just to gloat?' 'Neither.' Killian walked closer, stopping just inches from the silver-laced bars. The proximity sent a violent jolt of electricity through the air. 'I'm here to give you a choice.' 'I don't make deals with monsters.' 'You will make this one,' Killian countered smoothly. 'My elders are furious. They want the War Luna executed to prevent a rebellion from your surviving pack members. Meanwhile, my rivals think having a captive mate makes me weak.' 'Good. I hope they tear you apart.' 'If they do, your father dies first,' Killian said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. 'He is currently alive in the high-security ward. But if I sign his execution warrant, he won't survive the night.' Aria's breath hitched. She slammed her hands against the burning bars, ignoring the sizzle of her flesh. 'You touch him, and I will rip your throat out with my bare teeth!' 'Then protect him,' Killian commanded, his gray eyes flashing. 'Marry me. Accept the Luna title publicly. We sign a contract—a political alliance. You pretend to be my submissive mate to satisfy my pack, and in exchange, your father lives, and the remaining Silver Crescent wolves are spared from slavery.' Aria stared at him, her chest heaving. It was a trap, but it was the only way to save her people. 'And behind closed doors?' 'Behind closed doors, we are enemies,' Killian said, a dark smirk playing on his lips. 'But on the throne, you are my queen.' Before Aria could answer, a frantic scream echoed from the upper level of the dungeon, followed by the sound of breaking chains. The fortress alarms began to wail. Chapter 4: The Poisoned Breakout 'What did you do?' Aria yelled over the blaring alarms, her hands still gripping the burning silver bars. Killian didn't answer. He ripped a ring of keys from his belt, unlocked her cell door in one swift motion, and dragged her out by the wrist. 'Stay behind me,' he growled, his Alpha aura flaring as he drew a heavy silver dagger from his boot. They ran up the winding stone stairs, following the sounds of crashing metal and agonizing screams. When they burst into the high-security holding area, Aria’s heart stopped. The heavy iron cells were ripped open. Three Blackwood guards lay dead on the floor. Standing in the center of the room, covered in blood and breathing heavily, was her father, Alpha Richard. But something was horribly wrong. His veins were turning a sickly, pulsing black beneath his skin, and his eyes were completely bloodshot. 'Father!' Aria rushed forward, ignoring Killian’s warning shout. Richard gasped, collapsing into her arms. His skin was burning hot to the touch. 'Aria... you must... run,' he choked out, black blood spilling from his lips. 'They... they injected me...' 'Wolfsbane,' Killian growled, stepping beside them and kneeling down. He sliced his own palm, pressing the bleeding wound against Richard’s mouth. 'Drink. My Alpha blood will slow down the toxin.' Richard feebly pushed Killian’s hand away. 'Too late... high concentration... liquid wolfsbane. It was... the woman. The blonde one...' Tanya. Aria’s eyes flashed with a lethal, sapphire fire. The jealous warrior hadn't just targeted her; she had poisoned her father to force an execution. 'Killian,' Aria whispered, her voice dropping all emotion, leaving only the cold precision of a commander. 'The deal is on. I will be your Luna. I will sit on your throne. But right now, you are going to help me save my father, and then you are going to let me kill Tanya.' Killian looked at the black veins spreading up Richard's neck, then looked up into Aria's fierce, unyielding gaze. For the first time, a look of genuine respect crossed the Heartless Alpha's face. 'Deal,' Killian said. He stood up, scooping Richard's heavy body into his arms. 'The pack pack-doctor is on the upper level. But we have to move now. Tanya didn't do this alone—she just unlocked the cells of every rogue we captured this month. We are surrounded.' As if on cue, the shadows at the end of the corridor shifted. A dozen rabid, rogue werewolves stepped into the light, their jaws dripping with saliva, blocking the only exit to the medical bay.
