Shadow protocol
Chapter 1 – The Last Message
The rain began at dusk and never stopped.
From the window of his small apartment overlooking the city's aging industrial district, Kai Mercer watched the streets disappear beneath shimmering reflections of neon lights. Five years had passed since the mission that destroyed his career, his team, and supposedly his sister.
The world believed he was dead.
Kai preferred it that way.
By day, he repaired watches and antique clocks in a tiny workshop hidden between a bookstore and a bakery. Customers knew him only as "Mr. K." They had no idea he could identify a sniper's position from the echo of a single gunshot or disable a security system in under thirty seconds.
Every night, however, his real mission continued.
His apartment walls were covered with maps, photographs, newspaper clippings, coded messages, and names connected by red strings. Every clue pointed to the same mystery.
Elena Mercer.
Dead.
Missing.
Or alive.
Kai refused to stop searching.
At exactly 2:17 a.m., his old phone buzzed.
One vibration.
Then another.
Then dozens more.
Every phone in the building began ringing at once.
Outside, people stepped onto their balconies, staring at glowing screens.
Kai unlocked his phone.
A black screen appeared.
White letters slowly typed themselves across the display.
SHADOW PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.
His blood ran cold.
A second line appeared.
Hello, brother.
Kai's hand trembled.
Only one person had ever called him that in encrypted communications.
Elena.
Before he could think, every light in his apartment flickered. His computer turned on by itself. The television switched channels rapidly before displaying the same message.
Someone wasn't just sending a text.
They had taken control of every connected device.
Across the city, sirens erupted.
News stations reported unexplained blackouts. Banks temporarily froze transactions. Traffic lights malfunctioned. Emergency services struggled to communicate.
Within minutes, panic spread.
Kai grabbed a hidden metal case from beneath the floorboards.
Inside were a custom pistol, spare magazines, encrypted hard drives, fake passports, cash, and the small data drive Elena had given him five years earlier.
He had hoped never to use them again.
A sudden knock echoed through the apartment.
Three slow knocks.
Pause.
Two quick knocks.
It was an old agency recognition code.
Kai reached for his pistol.
The knock came again.
He opened the door.
Standing in the hallway was a woman wearing a long black coat. A silver mask covered the upper half of her face. Rainwater dripped from her sleeves.
"You've become difficult to find," she said.
"Who are you?"
"A friend."
"I don't have friends."
"You used to."
She handed him a small memory card.
"Watch it."
Kai inserted it into an old laptop.
A video appeared.
The footage showed a secret underground laboratory.
Scientists rushed through corridors while alarms screamed.
A woman walked into view.
Kai froze.
It was Elena.
She looked older, stronger, but unmistakably alive.
She looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, they found me before I escaped. Don't trust anyone—not governments, not intelligence agencies, not even the people who claim to be helping you."
The screen suddenly filled with static.
The recording ended.
Kai stared silently.
The masked woman spoke.
"They're coming."
As if on cue, a deafening explosion shattered the windows across the street.
Black armored vehicles surrounded the building.
Men in tactical armor poured onto the sidewalks.
Red laser sights swept across Kai's apartment.
The hunt had begun.
Chapter 2 – Sixty Seconds
The first sniper round shattered the apartment window.
Glass exploded across the floor as Kai instinctively tackled the masked woman behind the kitchen counter.
"How many?" he asked.
She peeked through a narrow gap in the broken wall.
"At least thirty outside. Four sniper positions. Two assault teams moving up the stairwell."
Kai frowned.
"They're not police."
"No."
"They're professionals."
"They're better."
The apartment lights suddenly died.
Darkness swallowed the room.
Only the flashing blue and red emergency lights outside illuminated the walls.
A loudspeaker echoed from the street below.
"Kai Mercer! Surrender immediately! You will not be harmed."
Kai laughed quietly.
"They always say that."
The masked woman checked her watch.
"We have sixty seconds before they breach."
Kai opened the old metal case hidden beneath his bed.
Inside were compact smoke grenades, a grappling line, lock-picking tools, encrypted flash drives, and a matte-black pistol he hadn't touched in years.
He loaded the weapon.
It felt familiar.
Almost comforting.
The countdown had begun.
60...
Heavy boots thundered up the staircase.
52...
Someone attached explosives to the apartment door.
Kai pulled a smoke grenade from the case.
"What happens if they catch me?"
The woman hesitated.
"They'll use you to unlock Shadow Protocol."
Kai looked at her sharply.
"So the AI still needs me."
"For now."
45...
The hallway outside filled with shouted commands.
"Stack up!"
"Breach on my signal!"
Kai examined the room.
Front door—blocked.
Windows—covered by snipers.
Fire escape.
One chance.
He hooked the grappling line onto a steel beam above the broken window.
The woman nodded.
"It'll hold."
Thirty seconds.
The explosive charge beeped.
Kai pulled the pin from the smoke grenade.
The room vanished into thick grey clouds.
The explosion blasted the front door inward.
Armed soldiers stormed inside.
Gunfire erupted.
Bullets tore through furniture and walls.
Kai fired only when necessary, aiming for lights instead of people.
The apartment plunged into complete darkness.
Night-vision goggles flickered.
Someone screamed.
Chaos spread through the assault team.
"Move!" Kai shouted.
He and the masked woman leaped through the shattered window onto the fire escape.
The freezing rain soaked them instantly.
Below, black armored vehicles blocked every street.
Searchlights swept the buildings.
Drones buzzed overhead like mechanical insects.
"There!" a soldier yelled.
Kai slid down the fire escape, firing one shot to destroy a pursuing drone.
It spiraled into the street, exploding against an armored truck.
The blast created the distraction they needed.
They sprinted through a narrow alley.
The woman stopped suddenly.
She reached into her coat and handed Kai a small encrypted phone.
"When it rings, answer it."
"Who'll be calling?"
"I don't know."
"You don't know?"
"They change their identities every time."
Before Kai could ask another question, she disappeared into the darkness between two buildings as silently as she had arrived.
"Kai!"
The voice echoed from the rooftop above.
He looked up.
A lone figure stood in the rain, face hidden beneath a hood.
The stranger raised a hand and dropped a small object.
Kai caught it.
It was Elena's old silver pendant—the one she had worn on the final mission five years earlier.
The hooded figure spoke only four words.
"She's waiting for you."
Then the figure vanished into the storm.
Kai stood alone in the alley, rain pouring down, clutching the pendant tightly.
His encrypted phone vibrated.
An unknown caller.
He answered.
A familiar voice whispered through the speaker.
"Hello, brother."
It was Elena.
Chapter 3 – Ghosts Never Die
The warehouse was silent.
Not the peaceful kind of silence—but the kind that made every heartbeat sound like a warning.
Kai tightened his grip on the pistol as he stepped deeper into the abandoned building. The flashlight in his hand flickered, revealing rusted containers, broken machinery, and footprints in the dust.
Fresh footprints.
Someone had been there only minutes ago.
A metallic clang echoed from the darkness.
Kai spun around.
Nothing.
Then...
A whisper.
"Kai..."
His blood froze.
It was his sister's voice.
Impossible.
She had died five years ago.
The whisper came again, louder this time.
"Kai... don't trust her."
Before he could react, every light inside the warehouse burst on at once.
Dozens of computer monitors illuminated the room.
Every screen displayed the same image.
His sister.
Alive.
Looking directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this," she said, "it means they lied to you."
The video cut to black.
Suddenly, gunfire erupted from every direction.
Masked soldiers stormed the warehouse.
Kai dove behind a steel container as bullets tore through the air. The mysterious woman in black fired with deadly precision, but Kai couldn't stop thinking about the video.
If his sister was alive...
Who had he buried?
And who wanted him to believe she was dead?
Outside, a black helicopter hovered above the warehouse.
A sniper's laser settled on Kai's chest.
Then...
The laser disappeared.
Someone else had shot the sniper first.
Someone unseen was protecting him.
Or preparing him for something even worse.
