The sound of the doors locking made me look away from the meal I was preparing to look at the main door.
Zeeb was standing at the door with his back leaned against the door. “You seem tired.” I said, walking up to him to place a kiss on his cheek.
“Yeah, today was hectic.” He said with a small smile.
It's been three years since I arrived in the City. I've been living with Zeeb ever since I arrived and we both are now sort of an item.
“Is Kylie asleep?” He asked, looking in the direction of my daughter's room and I nodded gently.
“She is. Come, dinner is ready.” I said, leading him into the kitchen which was built together with the dining area and living room.
I could see he was quite stressed as he sat there to eat the food I had prepared for him. “Is something else bothering you?” I asked him with my head titled to the side to get a better view of his face. “You look like you want to tell me something.”
He didn't say a word and just started to eat. His actions made me worried, so I sat before him, watching him as he continued to dig in.
He finally let go of the spoon after completing the meal and looking up at me. “I'm sorry, Kania.” He blurted out.
“Uh? What do you mean by "you're sorry?” I asked him, honestly confused as to why he was apologizing.
“I've been into some financial crisis lately and I haven't been able to take care of my family. We are in serious need of money right now.” He said, clenching his fists.
“W-why didn't you tell me about this sooner? I would have asked for a raise at work.” I said, quite panicked.
Although I haven't met any of his family members, Zeeb has done a lot for me so I can't just turn away now when he needs help.
“Let's break up.” He suddenly said,
“E-excuse me?” I stuttered, looking at him with a raised brow. “Y-you're joking right?”
“I'm not joking, Kania. Let's break up. I really need to break up with you now. I met a woman named Kate few months ago from the Hanes family. I've been dating her secretly for a few months now and right now, I'm getting married to her.” He confessed in a rushed manner.
I felt like my entire world was crumbling at his words. This was happening again. This was the second time the man I love was leaving me for someone much better than I am.
I knew the Hanes family. They were one of the richest and most influential families out there. For Zeeb who held his position dear and always aspired for a higher rank in an abnormal manner, he would want more than just that.
I was a fool to think I could stay with someone like him. I would end up never being good enough for him. Even to the extent that he was faking his love for me for months just like Zayev did back then too.
“Y-you're j-joking right?” I said, my hands trembling under the table. “You didn't just say that, did you?”
“You have to understand me, Kania. This is very important. There's no way I could let this opportunity slip. She showed interest in me, Kania.” He said, not a hint of shame in his words. “The Hanes family…”
Before he could go on, my palm landed on his face with a very harsh slap. “Y-you.” My hands trembled violently as I voiced it out with tears filling up my eyes. “You disgust me.” I managed to say.
“Kania…”
“Don't.” I raised my hand to prevent him from saying a word. “How could you even say that to my face. You're shameless, disgusting and I hate you. Kylie and I will leave your house tomorrow. You can eat dist for all I care.”
Without letting him say another word, I dashed towards my daughter's room, closing the door behind me and adding the lock.
I slid down to the floor with my back against the door as I cried silently. What was wrong with me? Why did those who were supposed to be close to me and make me feel loved as a woman both a jackass? Was I the issue?
An event happening the first time was something, but the second time? Does that actually means something was wrong with me.
I found myself in front of my best friend's house after packing out of Zeeb's apartment. Meiko was a friend I met at my journalism work.
I've been close to her for w while and she was the only one who knew about my secret of being a werewolf and how my relationship with Zeeb was.
She always advised me to move out of his house but getting an accomodation with my financial status was difficult. And proposing leaving would sound somehow to Zeeb since we were dating.
“You're finally here.” Meiko said as she opened the door for me to come in. “Come over here Kylie.” She squealed as she took my daughter from me while allowing me to bring in our things.
“I'm so sorry for disturbing you, Meiko.” I apologized with a long sigh.
“Disturbing me? I'd love company. Living alone is a pain in the butt, you know.” She shrugged as she turned back her attention to my daughter while I arranged our things. “I just still can't believe he would do something like that. After all the time you two have spent together. That's just plain cruelty if you ask me, Kania.”
“I don't want to talk about it.” I waved her off before letting out a sigh. “I'm starting to think I'm the problem. This is the second time something like this is happening to me, Mei. I'm finally starting to think I am the problem.”
“Don't speak like that, Kania.” She placed her hands on my shoulders in a comforting manner. “You are not the issue. Maybe you should just focus on getting your life together for a while and maybe it's because you're helpless currently you feel this way.”
I turned to look up at her before letting out a sigh. Of course, she was right. I depended on the two right from the start as they asked me to and at the end of the day, I learnt nothing from Zayev and did as Zeeb asked.
“I'm such a failure. As a woman and as a mother.” I let out a sigh with my face buried in my palms.
“Don't say that, Nia. I know Kylie thinks she has the best mother ever.” Meiko comforted me as I looked in Kylie's direction.
I suddenly noticed she was rubbing her neck in an uncomfortable manner. I suddenly rushed to her, searching my bag frantically for her medications. “No, Kylie. This isn't the best time to start acting up.” I tried to calm her down with her medications, but after a while, it only grew worse.
Her face was turning pale and her eyes were extremely red from her reactions. “Meiko, hospital now.”
Meiko hurriedly helped me out of the house and we headed straight to the hospital. When we got there, the receptionist stopped me.
“Your insurance has been withdrawn by Mr Hrolf.” She informed me.
“What do you mean by that? I personally payed for this.” I argued with the receptionist.
“She can't be admitted unless the payment is made in full.” The receptionist reminded me, making my blood boil.
Zeeb Hrolf that jerk!
By the time Meiko was able to gather some money along with me, Kylie was getting worse by the second.
She was rushed into the Emergency Unit immediately and I was angry at myself, at Zeeb and at the hospital at the same time.
What will happen to my baby now that she wasn't given immediate treatment? I clenched my fists in anger as I paced back and forth before the doctor finally stepped out.
“We did all we could, Miss Conri. We couldn't do anything to her condition and it's only a matter of time before we lose her.”
Why? Why is everything going DAMN WRONG?
